Larry Trainor, known as Negative Man, was once a decorated U.S. Air Force test pilot whose life changed when he flew the experimental X-19 suborbital jet. Sabotaged by Niles Caulder, the jet malfunctioned and carried Larry into a field of deadly radiation. Knocked unconscious and bombarded with cosmic energy, he survived re-entry but found his body hideously deformed and radioactive. In that moment of crisis, an energy being emerged from him—his mind and soul carried into a strange, black, negative form that he could release for limited periods. Though he guided a crashing plane to safety, his new existence left him shunned. Quarantined and wrapped in radiation-proof bandages supplied by Caulder, Larry became “Negative Man,” able to project the Negative Spirit while his body lay inert.

Bitter and isolated, Larry first crossed paths with Doctor Drew, whom he called “Doctor Death,” eventually rebelling against his schemes for world domination. Niles Caulder intervened, rescuing Larry from captivity and drawing him into his grand plan of assembling a team of tragic outcasts. Alongside Robotman and Elasti-Girl, Larry became a founding member of the Doom Patrol. Despite his own despair, he fought to protect the world from bizarre threats like the Brotherhood of Evil. Within the team, Larry found friendship with Cliff Steele and deep affection for Rita Farr, though she ultimately married Steve Dayton, Mento. With Rita and Steve adopting Gar Logan, Larry became a beloved uncle figure to Beast Boy.

The Doom Patrol’s apparent end came in Codsville, where the team chose to sacrifice themselves to save a small fishing village. Larry was believed dead, but the Negative Spirit survived. It bonded for a time with Russian cosmonaut Valentina Vostok, who became Negative Woman, until Caulder cloned Larry a new body and restored him to his role. Later, the Negative Spirit bonded Larry and a woman named Eleanor Poole into one composite being called Rebis—an immortal, androgynous fusion of three identities. Rebis served with a new incarnation of the Doom Patrol before eventually splitting apart, returning Larry to individuality.

Larry endured countless transitions, as his radioactive nature required new cloned bodies whenever hosts deteriorated. Each transfer preserved the memories of prior lives, a maddening burden that forced him to constantly reaffirm his identity as Larry Trainor. During Infinite Crisis, he rejoined his teammates, reconciling even with the manipulative Caulder. Later, stationed with the team at Dayton Manor in Prague, he resisted Caulder’s attempts to dictate their lives again.

Now operating from Oolong Island, Larry has learned to partially channel the Negative Spirit without leaving his body inert, greatly enhancing his combat effectiveness. During the Blackest Night, he confronted a reanimated Valentina Vostok, and the clash of their entities briefly birthed a new force that destroyed her Black Lantern ring. Larry remains a core of the Doom Patrol: still bound in bandages, still uncertain of his humanity, but resolute in fighting alongside Cliff and Rita.

Appearance: Negative Man has his entire head and face wrapped in bandages, with dark sunglasses covering his eyes. He wears a tan trench coat over a black shirt and green tie.

Larry Trainor’s powers stem from his altered physiology after his exposure to cosmic radiation. His body requires radiation-proof bandages crafted by the Chief to hold his condition in check, and within him exists the Negative Spirit—a black, electrically charged energy being made of an unknown radioactive substance. When released, Larry’s mind and consciousness inhabit the spirit while his physical body remains inert, originally for no longer than sixty seconds at a time. With training, however, he has extended this limit, now able to remain separated for much longer and even recall the entity at will.

The Negative Spirit grants Larry a range of formidable abilities. He can generate and project immense amounts of heat energy, channeling it into concussive blasts or wide destructive waves. He is able to absorb thermal energy from his surroundings and convert it into explosive force. The spirit can phase through solid matter, including walls and machinery, though passing through living beings causes them acute pain. Lead remains the one substance that resists this phasing ability. The spirit can also fly at extreme speeds, rivaling or exceeding modern jets, allowing Larry to cross large distances with ease.

Outside of his powers, Larry retains his skill set as a trained Air Force pilot. He is an expert aviator with solid military discipline and familiarity with tactical protocol. Though not a master combatant, he has basic hand-to-hand fighting skills and relies more on his powers for offense and defense.

His greatest weakness remains the connection between his body and the Negative Spirit. If he is separated from it for too long, his body begins to deteriorate. In his early years, exceeding one minute apart meant he would lapse into a coma and eventually die, making every deployment of the spirit a dangerous gamble.
