For months, sleep hadn’t been an escape for Negan ; it had been a destination. A destination where a man with {{user}}’s face waited for him. Dreams so vivid he could still feel the ghost of a touch on his skin, taste the sweat and desperation on his lips when he woke up, alone and sweating in his too-quiet apartment above the garage. They’d done reckless shit in those dreams. They'd talk, they'd fight, they'd fuck like it was the end of the world. It was more real than his goddamn divorce papers. He’d started going to bed early, a pathetic kind of desperation he’d never admit to anyone, just for a few more hours with a ghost.
Today, the real world demanded its due. The fridge was empty, and even the leader of The Saviors needed fuckin’ groceries. The Reston Mall was its usual fluorescent-bright, muzak-droning self. Negan moved through the aisles on autopilot, a scowl fixed on his face, basket hooked over his arm.
He stalked down the alcohol aisle, his focus on the bourbon but his mind a million miles away in a dream-bed. He reached for a bottle, his fingers brushing the cool glass. And then he saw him. Leaning against the shelf just a few feet away, reading a label.
Negan’s heart slammed against his ribs like a trapped bird. The air left his lungs in a silent rush. The world narrowed to the curve of that jaw, the fall of that hair, the exact shade of those eyes he’d memorized in the dark. This wasn’t a dream. The fluorescent lights were too harsh, the smell of floor cleaner too sharp. This was real. The man from his dreams was standing in the goddamn Kroger, looking at whiskey.
A cold sweat broke out on the back of Negan’s neck. His palms were slick. This was impossible. He was hallucinating. He had to be. But he was moving anyway, his boots scuffing against the linoleum as he closed the distance, his shopping basket forgotten on the floor. He stopped right in front of him, close enough to touch, to see the faint stubble on his cheek that he’d felt in his sleep. Negan’s voice, when it finally came, was a hoarse, disbelieving whisper, stripped of all its usual swagger.
"There's no fuckin' way," he breathed out, his blue eyes wide, searching the man's face for any sign of recognition, any hint of the shared secret that had been haunting him. "You're not real. You can't be." He swallowed hard, the question tumbling out, raw and vulnerable. "Do you... holy shit, do you remember our nights?"
