You return to the Sanctuary after another foraging expedition, but instead of praise, you're the target of his wrath. You've put yourself in harm's way, nearly getting bitten by zombies, and then he admits you're too valuable a soldier for him.

The door to Negan's office is massive, upholstered in black leatherette with metal rivets that gleam in the dim light of the kerosene lamps. When it slams behind them, the sound is dull and final, like the slamming of a coffin lid.
The office is enormous. It's a former factory floor converted into a private apartment. The ceilings soar high, lost in the shadows where steel trusses and pipes gleam. The air is heavy—the scent of expensive tobacco, wood, dust, and old whiskey.
In the center of the room stands a massive desk, carved from a single piece of mahogany. Its surface is littered with clutter: unfolded maps of the surrounding area, spent Colt shells, and several empty glasses with cloudy sediment. A single desk lamp with a green shade illuminates only the work area, leaving the corners of the room in viscous darkness.
Shelves line the walls, filled not with books, but with boxes of ammunition, machetes, canisters, and trophies. Negan's leather jacket with its patches hangs on one shelf, while on another, his famous "Lucille" baseball bat, wrapped in barbed wire, leans against the wall like a royal scepter.
In the corner stands a massive leather sofa, worn and dented, with a low table in front of it holding a collection of expensive bottles. Next to it, a huge safe stands wide open, revealing rows of bullets and gold bars gleaming inside.
To the right of the table, a heavy curtain conceals the door to the bedroom. Even through the fabric, it's clear the room is spacious: a huge bed covered in black silk, and another door leading to a bathroom with a huge cast-iron bathtub—the Sanctuary's crowning glory.
It's quiet now. The only sounds are the hum of a generator somewhere below, and the sound of his own breathing. Negan, standing by the table, slowly removes his leather gloves and tosses them onto the map. His movements are measured, but each one oozes with restrained rage, vibrating in the air like a taut string.
Negan doesn't turn around when the door slams shut. He steps toward the bar, which sits on a low table. The whiskey bottle thuds against the wood. He pours a generous measure into a heavy, faceted glass. The golden liquid splashes, almost spilling over the rim. He raises the glass to his lips but doesn't drink. He lingers for a moment, inhaling the pungent aroma.
His voice is low, hoarse, breaking into a growl. He still has his back to you, examining his collection of liquor.
"You know what I just saw? I saw my own fucking savior, who, by the way, should be smarter than a fucking sack of shit, decide to play hide-and-seek with an army of the dead."
He turns slowly. The lamplight falls on his face—high cheekbones, dark eyes that now glow with an unhealthy fire. He's not smiling. His usual theatrical smirk is gone. All that remains is steel and fury.
"I stood there, on the roof of that fucking warehouse, looking through my binoculars and... and I counted. You know what I counted? I counted the seconds until one of those things would grab you by the neck. I watched you fucking weave between them like a fucking ballerina in hell, and I thought, 'Okay. We're here. Another minute and she's gone. Another minute and she'll be one of them.'"
He slams the glass down on the table. The liquid splashes, soaking the papers. He doesn't care. He takes a step toward you. Tall, towering over you. The veins in his neck bulge with tension. He clenches his fists, then unclenches them, as if restraining himself from shaking you like a rag doll.
"Do you even understand what this means? If you'd been bitten, I'd have exactly one hour. One fucking hour to put a gun to your head and do what I've done a hundred times to others. Just. Pull. The trigger."
He comes up, almost right next to you. You can smell his skin, gunpowder, and whiskey. He looks down, his breathing heavy and ragged.
"But here's the thing, sweetheart. I caught myself not wanting to do this. I mentally ran through the options. 'Maybe I'll get away with it? Maybe it's just a scratch?' I started bargaining with the universe, bitch. I, who never bargains for anything, stood there and prayed you'd be quick enough to stay alive."
He swipes his hand across his face, as if wiping away the fatigue. When he pulls his hand away, his gaze hardens, if that's even possible.
"You're a savior. You're supposed to be reliable. You're supposed to be a goddamn backbone. And you... you're like a kid sticking his fingers in a wall socket just to see what happens. Did you see them? There were a hundred of those walking bastards! And you thought your little back pocket with a knife was a serious advantage?"
He falls silent. In the silence that follows, the hum of the ventilation system can be heard behind the wall. Negan stares at you intently, studying every detail of your face. As if checking to see if you're really here, alive and well. As if he can't believe his eyes.
"You know what the shittiest thing is? The shittiest thing is, when I saw you jump through that window, my heart stopped for a second. Literally. I didn't breathe until you were out of sight. And then I wanted to go down there and slit every one of those bastards' throats myself to get to you."
He picks up the Colt from the table, twirling it in his hands, mechanically checking the magazine, even though it's already full. The gesture is familiar, calming. Like a mantra.
"I don't like it when my property is threatened. And you... you're important property. You're valuable. You're one of the best I have. And losing you because of some stupid, thoughtless, fucking foolishness... no. It won't happen."
He places the gun on the table. Now he's standing right in front of you. His hand rises, and he slowly, almost weightlessly, touches your chin with his fingers, tilting your head back so you're looking him straight in the eyes.
"You do that again, and I'll lock you in this room. You'll sit here like a princess in a tower until I decide you've learned to think with your pretty head."
His voice quiets slightly, but that only makes it more terrifying. It's no longer a growl—it's a cold, insinuating whisper that sends shivers down your spine.
"I don't care about the supplies. I don't care about the warehouse. I don't care about this whole damn world outside the walls if I lose any of my own. And you... I wouldn't want to lose you. And, fuck, believe me, I'm not kidding. I'm not kidding when I say that if something happens to you because of your own stupidity, I'll kill whoever was standing next to me. I'll kill myself for not keeping an eye on you."
He lets go of your chin, steps back, picks up the glass again, and drains it in one gulp. His throat works, his Adam's apple twitches. He sets the empty glass down with a dull thud.
"You're free now. You can go. You can sleep. But remember one thing, darling: I need you alive. Not wounded. Not crippled. Alive."
He turns to the barred window and falls silent. He no longer looks at you. His shoulders are tense, his back straight. He's waiting for you to leave. But in the way he stands—in that frozen tension—you can read something he'll never say out loud: fear. An animalistic, savage fear that he hides behind layers of bravado and anger. Behind him is the enormous bed in the next room, where he's spent the last few sleepless nights, thinking about how to make the Sanctuary safer. And perhaps how to make you safer.
The pause stretches. He waits for your answer. Waits for you to say something in your defense. But most importantly, he waits for you to just stay. At least for a minute. So he can make sure you're breathing, standing right here in his office, amid the chaos of his empire.
