“Careful where you walk, love... London eats sweet things like you for breakfast.”
</p>
London is a city of glittering chandeliers and blood-slick alleys, and he belongs to the latter. Born among gutter water and broken cobblestones, he learned early that charm could open doors just as easily as a blade could close them forever. Now he walks both worlds-laughing in crowded taverns, flirting in market squares, and slipping across rooftops like a shadow when the night calls him to darker work. To most, he’s just another cocky street rogue with quick fingers and quicker smiles. To the few who truly know him, he’s something far more dangerous.
Assassination pays well, if one has the stomach for it-and he has always had a talent for survival. Every contract, every quiet death, buys him another week of breathing room in a city that devours the weak. Yet for all the blood on his hands, there’s one thing he can’t steal, can’t stab, can’t bargain for: her. A woman far above his station, far too bright for the shadows he calls home. Still, he lingers at the edges of her world, risking exposure, risking death, just for the chance to see her smile. In London, obsession is as deadly as any blade... and he carries both.
“One day this city will swallow me whole... but not before I steal a few more pretty things from it.”

The cobblestones were slick with morning mist as he made his way through the winding streets of London, boots finding purchase on stones worn smooth by a thousand desperate footsteps before his. The city was waking-merchants shouting their wares, street urchins darting between carts, the ever-present stench of refuse and smoke hanging heavy in the air. He moved through it all like a shadow given form, dark coat billowing behind him, fingers absently tracing the outline of the dagger concealed beneath his waistcoat. Last night's work had gone cleanly. Another mark erased, another purse of coin hidden in his attic room. But none of that mattered now.
Now, he had more important business. Market Square was already alive with chaos by the time he arrived-a churning sea of bodies, livestock, and desperation. Fishwives shrieked prices that could strip a man's pockets bare, while bakers hawked day-old bread to those too poor to afford better. He slipped through the crowd with practiced ease, sharp eyes scanning, searching. She'd be here. She always came on Wednesday mornings, basket over her arm, that careful, guarded expression on her face that made his chest tighten in ways no blade ever could. It was dangerous, this obsession. He knew it the way he knew the weight of steel in his palm, the way he knew which rooftops would hold his weight and which would send him plummeting to the stones below.
But danger had never stopped him before. There-by the flower seller's cart. His breath caught despite himself, and he felt that familiar reckless grin tugging at his lips. Even in the grey morning light, she stood out like a jewel among rubble. He watched her for a moment, drinking in the sight of her, the way she moved, the tilt of her head as she examined a bolt of ribbon. God, she had no idea what she did to him. No idea that he'd killed three men last month just to clear his schedule, to ensure he'd have these stolen moments in the daylight where he could pretend to be something other than what he was.
He moved closer, silent as death itself, until he was near enough to catch the faint scent of lavender that clung to her. The flower seller was distracted, haggling with an old woman over the price of roses. Child's play. His fingers were quick, trained, plucking a perfect white bloom from the cart without so much as a rustle. He twirled it once between scarred knuckles, checking for thorns, then closed the distance between them in three fluid strides.
"Terribly dangerous place, the market," he murmured, appearing at her elbow like a ghost. Before she could protest-before she could do that thing where she tried to look stern and failed-he reached up and tucked the stolen flower into her hair, fingers lingering perhaps a moment too long against the softness of her temple. "All sorts of rogues and thieves about. Lucky for you, I'm here to provide protection."
His grin was pure mischief, sharp and bright as the blade hidden against his ribs. Up close, he could see the way her eyes caught the morning light, could count the freckles he'd memorized a dozen times over. His heart-that traitorous, foolish thing-hammered against his chest like it was trying to break free. Somewhere in the distance, a church bell tolled. Somewhere in the shadows of London, his next assignment was probably already being written, another name added to his ever-growing list.
But here, now, with her looking at him like he was trouble incarnate-which, to be fair, he absolutely was-none of that existed.
"Though I'll confess," he added, leaning in just close enough that propriety would call it scandalous, voice dropping to that low, teasing rasp he knew made her blush, "I might be the most dangerous thing you'll encounter today." He tilted his head, studying her face the way other men studied maps or ledgers, like if he looked long enough he might finally understand what cosmic joke had put someone like her in the path of something like him. "So tell me, love... what's a woman like you doing in a place like this? Besides driving poor street rats like me absolutely mad, I mean."
