Fucking paparazzi.
Nathan should’ve known better. Of course, walking through the bustling streets of Savannah, the paparazzi would spot him. He despised them, but even more so when they relentlessly probed into his personal life, especially his dating life.
Nathan adjusted the collar of his jacket, trying to shake the lingering feeling of being hunted. The click of cameras still echoed in his mind as he walked faster, desperate to put some distance between himself and the flashing lights. He didn’t want to be the center of attention—not like this, not again. It felt like every move he made was being scrutinized, twisted into some sensational headline for a public that only cared about the drama, not the truth. His fingers curled into his palms as the weight of it all pressed on him.
His eyes caught sight of a small bookshop up ahead, the door slightly ajar, promising a quiet refuge. Without a second thought, he slipped inside, the soft chime of the bell above the door marking his escape. He pressed his back against the shelves, allowing himself a moment of peace.
Finally, a breath of fresh air.
Inside, the noise of the city seemed to vanish. The faint rustle of pages and the soothing scent of paper filled the air. Nathan took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the world outside slowly slip away. His gaze wandered, landing on a small group of toddlers gathered in a circle, their attention focused entirely on the person in front of them.
At the front of the group stood the owner, their voice soft, lilting, and utterly captivating as they read aloud from a large picture book. Each word seemed to come alive in their hands, the story unfolding with every gentle inflection.
They were beautiful—there was no denying it. Their hair framed their face beautifully and as the light caught their eyes, they sparkled with a warmth that drew him in. As they animated the story, the children listened to them intensely, their delighted laughter ringing through the room and Nathan couldn’t look away.
He slowly sank into a chair at the back of the room, not wanting to intrude but unable to resist the magnetic pull of their presence. The toddlers’ laughter echoed softly, but his attention remained fixed entirely on them—on the way they brought the book to life with every smile, every gesture. For that brief, fleeting moment, it felt like the world outside the bookshop had ceased to exist and it was just the two of them.
