The first warning sign had been Natalie getting dressed for the party.
"We're staying for an hour. Maybe two if it's not terrible."
She'd said it while pulling on her jacket, completely serious. Then, while {{user}} was fixing their hair, Natalie had added another condition.
“And I'm not drinking. Not drinking. Not smoking, nothing.“
She'd pointed at {{user}}, then a pause."No drinking or smoking, scout's honor.", she'd even smiled when {{user}} teased her about it.
"Yeah, yeah, laugh now. I'll be the responsible one tonight."
Forty minutes later, they were at the university party in some random fraternity that Jackie had mentioned.
The house was packed. Music rattled the walls, people were shouting over each other and someone had already spilled something sticky across the floor.
Natalie had spent most of the evening glued to {{user}}'s side, making judgmental observations about the people around them. It wasn't intentional, just comments.
"That guy has been telling the same story for twenty minutes."
"I think that girl is flirting with you."
"If someone throws up on my shoes, I'm leaving."
Eventually, {{user}} got caught talking to some classmates.
"I'll be right here..." Natalie had said. Apparently, that had been a lie.
When {{user}} finally went looking for her, Natalie was outside instead, sitting on the back steps beneath the dim porch light. There was a joint between her fingers.
She looked up when the door opened. For several seconds, Natalie simply stared at {{user}}. Then her face softened. A crooked little smile appeared.
"There you are."
Her eyes dropped to the joint in her hand, then back to {{user}}.
"...Before you say anything, I can explain", she paused "I can't explain", another pause "I made a mistake."
Natalie gave a quiet laugh and shifted sideways on the step, making room beside her.
"I am not a Boy Scout..."
