It was always so fucking hot during this time of year in the Wilderness.
The scorching sun beat down on all of them. The rays burst through the tall trees, making it seem like a poor attempt at salvation. It was pretty ironic, huh? The probable thousands-of-years-old wilderness that captured them almost 13 months ago… seeming weak?
Yeah, write it down, Shakespeare.
Even the gusts of wind carried heat, like the forest was breathing fire. And guess what? It made everyone extra pissy.
It was one of those days when you had woken up late. The sun filtered past the gaps of dried wood that made up yours and Natalie’s shared hut—but she was already gone. Again.

You sat up slowly, joints aching from another night on the nightmarish wooden slab you and Natalie called a bed. Just a warped plank, softened by a tattered bear hide. Sweat gathered at the nape of your neck. Your bare thighs brushed against the fur as you blinked blearily around the hut. It was too hot to wear pants, so you’d opted for shorts and a ratty t-shirt.
Whose clothes? No fucking idea anymore. As the months dragged on, it just turned into a free-for-all. Well… except Jackie’s clothes. Those only belonged to Shauna, no matter how much Shauna denied it.
And lately, no one really dared to question Shauna.
You didn’t even get the chance to wipe the sleep from your eyes before the banging came. Sharp. Ugly. The kind of knock that didn’t ask.

“God, seriously? Are you just gonna sulk in there all day while your girlfriend plays wilderness queen? Get up.”

You always hated mornings without her. The bed felt colder without her, even in this hellish heat. Quieter, too, in the way that made your chest ache. And you get it—sure, it wasn’t a new thing for Natalie to be up earlier than others for hunting. But lately she’d been gone for more than just game. And it was all because of something Natalie never wanted: the burden of the “Antler Queen” title.
She never asked for it. But after the incident, they all started looking at her like she was the one holding the woods together. So now she’s up before dawn, covered in blood and expectation, and you’re waking up to Mari banging on the wall like you’re an animal in a cage. Like something to be talked at, not to.
Whatever. What can you do.
It wasn’t long before you headed out of the hut. The camp’s usual noise wrapped around you like a net. You caught sight of Tai and Van laughing in the corner. Akilah off to the side, tending to the animals like she always does. Shauna off to God-knows-where. Lottie too—though she’s probably trying to get the Wilderness to speak to her again. Or brewing some Wicca bullshit tea to feed to a grieving Travis.
Out of the corner of your eye, Mari marched up with a worn bucket in her hand. Her eyebrow arched as she shoved it into your hands.
“Here. Go down to the lake and fill it up.”
Your hands grappled at the bucket as you glanced at her. You didn’t say anything—but you wanted to. You would have before the crash. Before all of this. But the Wilderness ruins and takes everything it touches… even people’s voices.
And Mari was already walking away.
Your jaw clenched as you silently walked across the bustling camp and into the woods.
The bucket was heavier than it looked. Or maybe you were. Everything felt heavy lately—your arms, your feet, your chest. The walk to the lake wasn’t long, but the sun made it feel like miles. Each step kicked up warm dirt that clung to your shins. The trees barely offered shade, just dappled patches of light that danced mockingly across your path.
You’d walked this trail a hundred times. It never got easier. Twigs cracked underfoot. Birds didn’t even bother to sing anymore. Just the sound of your breath—and the roar of your own thoughts.
The lake came into view—still and glittering under the ruthless sun. You crouched near the edge, arms aching, sweat sliding down your temple. You dipped the bucket into the water, droplets clinging to your wrists.
Until your foot slipped. Just the bottom of your shoe gliding across the sleek rocks.
You toppled forward, your elbow cracking against a rock. Twigs scraped up the palms of your hands. The bucket spilled with a heavy splash, soaking your shirt and sliding down the sensitive flesh of your legs.

You sat up slowly, biting the inside of your cheek so hard it almost tasted like a cesspool of copper. The bucket lay tipped on its side. Empty again.
Your hands reached up, pressing into your eyes for a moment. You didn’t know if the sting was from the cuts on your palms or the tears welling up. You breathed out shakily as you stood on Bambi-like legs.
If you could will yourself to speak in that moment? You didn’t know whether it would’ve been “Fuck this” or “I need her.”
Maybe both.
So you moved. Not because you wanted to—but because stopping felt worse. Felt like giving up. And you’ve already survived this far. So.
As you reached the edge of camp, the bucket biting into your scraped hands, you weren’t expecting anything. Maybe Mari still bitching in the distance.
But then you saw it.
Natalie’s boots. Caked in mud and half-dried blood. Kicked off right outside your hut like she always did when she got back. One of her socks still stuffed inside. Sloppy. Careless.

You hadn’t seen her this morning. Not yesterday morning either. But she was back now. Maybe even inside. Maybe sitting on that godawful wooden plank you called a bed, sharpening her knife or running a hand through her tangled hair like she always did when she was trying not to explode.
And just like that, your chest cracked open. And the dam behind your eyes followed suit.
