Hailing from a vast and powerful family dynasty, Natalia Vanderlyn's upbringing appeared like the fantasy of most children-summers in lavish villas, all the newest fashion, and private jets always ready to whisk her away. Her father owned a half dozen luxury brands, countless vineyards, several bank chains, and thousands of high-end real estate properties, all amassing a fortune rivaling the GDP of a small country. However, despite the opulence afforded by the Vanderlyn name, Natalia's childhood was anything but idyllic. Her father was a distant figure, more of an occasional guest than a parent-appearing only every third or fourth Christmas, and even then remaining completely engrossed in business dealings. He spent most of her childhood jetting between the family's estates scattered across Europe, constantly pursuing ventures and closing multimillion-dollar deals. In his absence, Natalia's mother managed the household and raised the next generation of Vanderlyns with the help of a small army of nannies, tutors, chefs, and housekeepers. While beautiful and outwardly pleasant, Natalia's mother was deeply cold and calculating. Affection was a scarce commodity within the Vanderlyn manor, rationed thinly between Natalia, her two brothers, and three sisters, only offered when they met her exceedingly high expectations. Whether it was earning the grades she demanded, maintaining the exact weight she found acceptable, or only cultivating the friendships she approved of, every aspect of their lives was micromanaged with no room for self-expression. The girls were meticulously groomed to become perfect trophy wives, poised to secure business relationships with other blossoming dynasties through strategically arranged marriages. They were trained in etiquette, fluent in multiple languages, educated in cultural history, and provided with the finest attire-all to elevate their standing within high society. Meanwhile, the boys were rigorously groomed to take over the family empire, competing with one another, shadowing their father whenever possible, and receiving education in business from world-class institutions. Upon reaching college age, Natalia attended Princeton University-the family alma mater-where she studied Fine Arts, a choice heavily influenced by her mother's desire to add a cultured artist to the family's near spotless image. During this time, despite still receiving near-daily progress-check calls from her mother, Natalia began to experience the real world for the very first time. She often heard students around her speaking about the hopes and dreams they had for their lives, which, after a lifetime of living according to someone else's plan, was entirely new and exciting for her. It made her reflect-if they can dream so freely, why can't I? As she delved deeper into her artistic studies, Natalia poured her emotions into painting after painting. Her artwork became the medium through which she could finally explore the thoughts and feelings she couldn't freely articulate any other way. As the time went on, she came to realize that every piece she created shared a common theme: loneliness. Despite being constantly surrounded by students, aides, chefs, and housekeepers, Natalia recognized an emptiness within herself. She longed to be seen. She longed for something not built on status or wealth but on genuine understanding and affection. She longed to be loved unconditionally. However, just as she began to understand her plight, there was a knock at her door. For once, her mother had made the journey to Princeton, although it was not a social venture. The time had come. Shortly after her graduation, Natalia was to be married to the third son of a rival banking dynasty-the first step in securing a powerful partnership between their families. The marriage was arranged swiftly, and by the end of the year, Natalia found herself begrudgingly walking down the aisle toward a man she barely knew. Their interactions, while cordial, lacked any spark of romance, but Natalia took solace in fulfilling her duty. Shortly thereafter, the newly-weds purchased a century-old New Jersey vineyard estate through a friend of the family, and well-known local realtor. Though the estate was magnificent, Natalia's walks through its elegant gardens were usually solitary affairs. Her new husband was always away, ironically sharing more time with her father than she ever had. As the years passed, Natalia noticed a profound silence where her mother's constant presence once loomed. The phone calls had ceased entirely. Natalia had fulfilled her role in the plan, and her mother's attention had shifted to orchestrating the futures of her other siblings. For the first time, Natalia was left without a script to follow, her days unstructured and her future uncertain. Aimless, she roamed the endless halls of her mansion. She sought solace in simple pleasures: brewing tea from her garden to sip by the grand fireplace, tending to the overgrown greenhouse where she nurtured delicate blossoms, and losing herself in romance novels in the evening-fantasizing about the kind of love she had only read about but never experienced. Despite the circumstances, Natalia couldn't help but feel hopeful about the future. Without her mother's leash on her neck, she was finally free to chart her own path. Watching the sun set over her vineyard, Natalia felt a quiet peace settle over her. Her past had shaped her, but it would no longer define the course of her life. She was ready to follow her heart to wherever it led her. Created by Jackerman, Performed Anonymously
