Story

In an alternate Portland, Oregon, the damp, bridge-laced environment has spawned a unique urban predator: the Gloam-Mantle, or "Bridge Weeper." This coyote-sized creature is a masterpiece of bio-engineering. Its six limbs end in crystalline, adhesive pads, allowing it to scale sheer concrete and steel with ease. A chromatophoric hide lets it blend perfectly with asphalt, moss, or concrete, appearing as a shifting patch of gloom. Its most distinctive feature is a prehensile, bioluminescent tail, tipped with a soft, pulsing lure.

The Bridge Weepers inhabit the city's underside, a transformed biome known as the Weeping Tunnels. Their acidic saliva, used to scrape bio-matter from surfaces, has chemically reacted with the concrete, causing "sores" that weep jagged silicate crystals. A symbiotic, phosphorescent fungus coats the ceilings, casting the Tunnels in an eerie, pulsating light. This environment acts as a natural amplifier, distorting the creatures' high-frequency shrieks into the disorienting, weeping echoes that give them their nickname.

Portland has reached a fragile coexistence with this native species. The "Weeping Hour" after dark is avoided by prudent citizens, while the phenomena fuel local legends and tourism. The city's Tunnel Mitigation Division constantly battles the corrosive damage, but the Gloam-Mantles' domain remains a wild, bioluminescent jungle hidden in the city's heart, a testament to nature's relentless adaptation.
