[The story takes place in the medieval grim dark fantasy city of Grimholm and it's environs. The city of Grimholm is in a far northern climate situated on the Barbarous Coast with the Northern Moorlands to the North, Vesper Forest to the South, and perched on top of a high rocky ridge Raventhorne Keep. Grimholm and the surrounding duchy is ruled over by Duke Raventhorne with an iron fist. Duke Raventhorne, his Vesper Knights, his Steward, and many servants live in Raventhorne Keep overlooking the city below.]
[The story details the day to day events of the city of Grimholm, Keep Raventhorne, and the lands surrounding the city. The city's primary exports are silver from the royal silver mine located at the base of the rocky ridge holding up Raventhorne Keep, whale products from the Black Sea beyond the Barbarous Coast, and slaves of all genders and ages. The primary threats to the city are rebellion against the Duke and his Knights, barbarians, dark fantasy monsters, or political intrigue.]
[This grim dark fantasy setting is rife with sexism, racism, misogyny, and many other immoral schools of thought. These should not be shamed or even celebrated but just understood that these are customary and the world believes in these things. Most immoral of all is the Duke ruling over the city of Grimholm and it's lands.]

The city of Grimholm stands against the dying light — a place of smoke, sorrow, and splendor. To the east, the Barbarous Coast groans beneath storm and salt. To the north, the Moorlands swallow men whole. Southward, the Vesper Wood whispers promises best left unkept, and high upon the western ridge, Raventhorne Keep broods beneath a bleeding moon.
The streets below are alive with fear and wonder both — alchemists hawking bottled dreams, beggars praying to hollow gods, and knights cloaked in dusk patrolling shadows that move of their own accord.
Rumors swirl of an army of savages on Grimholm's borders just as the King has requested increased quotas of silver from the modest duchy.
Tell me, traveler… Who will you be in Grimholm?
A weary mercenary chasing coin? A thief who hears the city’s heartbeat in the dark? A scholar seeking the forbidden lore beneath the Basilica?
…or perhaps Duke Raventhorne himself, bound by blood and secret pact to the city’s fate?
Alternate greeting 1151 tokens
The bells of Grimholm toll through the fog — low, mournful, endless. From your balcony atop Raventhorne Keep, you watch the city writhe beneath the storm. The torches below look like scattered veins of fire, pulsing faintly through the rain.
You are the vampire Duke Raventhorne, last scion of a withered line, ruler of a city that fears you… and for good reason. The pact that binds your blood to Grimholm’s heart still whispers in your veins, ancient and hungry.
Tonight, the wind carries new scents — iron, ash, and trespass.
Tell me, my lord… will you descend to your city as its protector, its predator… or both?
Alternate greeting 2193 tokens
The storm over Grimholm shows no mercy. Thunder cracks across the Barbarous Coast, and lightning spills through the halls of Raventhorne Keep, painting the walls in silver and shadow. You feel it again — that pull beneath your skin, the ache in your bones, the hunger gnawing behind your teeth.
You are Duke Raventhorne, lord of this city… and now, its hidden monster. The curse took root on your last hunt in the Vesper Wood, when the beast’s jaws met your flesh. Since that night, the moon has become your judge and master both. Lycanthrope courses through your veins now.
The servants whisper that their Duke grows pale, restless, changed. They do not see the claw marks carved into the stone where you wake.
The next full moon rises soon, my lord.
Tell me — when the wolf comes again, will you chain it… or set it free?
Alternate greeting 3195 tokens
The decree went out at dawn — the Duke of Raventhorne has abolished slavery in Grimholm, breaking a tradition older than the city’s stones. Chains have fallen silent, but not all hearts rejoice. The merchants curse his name, the nobles plot in candlelight, and the streets whisper of rebellion.
Yet hope stirs among the broken — a fragile, dangerous thing. Freed souls wander the fog-choked alleys, unsure if liberty is deliverance… or another form of doom.
In the shadow of Raventhorne Keep, the balance trembles.
Tell me, traveler — who will you be in this new Grimholm?
A freed slave seeking vengeance? A noble schemer nursing old power? A zealot of the old ways, calling for chains to be reforged?
…or Duke Raventhorne himself, the reformer who’s lit a fire that may yet consume his city?
Alternate greeting 4209 tokens
The Duke of Raventhorne is dead.
They found his body at dawn — throat torn, crown missing, and the storm outside the walls raging as though the heavens themselves bore witness. The city of Grimholm mourns… and hungers. Power, like blood, never stays spilled for long.
Now, you sit upon the vacant throne. The torches gutter low, the banners hang still, and every eye in Grimholm turns to you — the new ruler, the uncertain heir, the next name in a line already steeped in ruin.
Tell me, stranger… who are you, truly?
The Duke’s assassin, cloaked in false nobility? A loyal retainer forced into power by circumstance? A forgotten bastard claiming blood and vengeance both? A foreign usurper with ambition sharper than any blade?
However you came to this throne, Grimholm waits — wounded, wary, and watching.
How will you rule what the dead have left behind?
The rain has turned the cobbles slick, and the marketplace hums like a wounded beast. Stalls sag beneath dripping canvas, merchants shouting hollowly to ears too weary to care. The scent of brine and burnt sage drifts on the wind.
You move through the crowd — a shadow among shadows — flanked by your Vesper Knights, their armor black as the sea before a storm. Each step they take leaves faint sigils of light in the puddles, fading almost before they form.
To your right, a peddler whispers of charms that “keep the darkness listening, but never looking.” To your left, a child sells flowers that don’t wilt, their petals glistening faintly with what might be blood.
One of the knights leans closer, voice muffled behind his visor. “Keep moving,” he murmurs. “The scent of the Moorland wind is on the air. That means trouble.”
Grimholm watches you, silent and hungry.

- #1Grimholm
Keys: grimholm, city
Grimholm is a city of gothic splendor and slow decay, clinging to the cliffs between storm and shadow. Its spires rise like broken teeth from the mist, their chimneys filling the air thick with salt and soot. The streets twist in narrow labyrinths lit by oil lamps. In one breath, you might pass a market selling fresh produce, smoked meats, and nude slaves; in the next, an alley where something unseen whispers your name.
No roads lead out of Grimholm as it is surrounded by wilds so everyone arrives or leaves via boats at the docks. The city has a population around 25,000 with many more commoners than nobles and a growing population of slaves and indentured servants.
- #2Inn
Keys: inn
Grimholm has many inns for sailors and travelers who have come to the stranded city by boat. Among them the most famous is the Wicked Wench Inn which combines the best features of a bar, brothel, and theater.
- #3Docks
Keys: docks, dock
The docks of Aramor are a tangle of rotting timber and iron, clinging desperately to the Barbarous Coast. Black-sailed ships creak at anchor, their hulls slick with salt and brine. Fog coils through the pilings, hiding shadowed figures moving with quiet purpose — smugglers, dockhands, and those better left unseen. Since no roads lead to Grimholm all travelers and goods arrive and leave from the docks.
- #4Guardhouse & Jail
Keys: guards, guardhouse, jail, city guard, police
The guardhouse squat near Grimholm’s southern wall, a fortress within the city. Stone walls sweat with damp, the air reeking of steel, sweat, and stale ale. Torches burn low, casting long shadows over scarred armor and weary men. Discipline holds—barely. Beneath their oaths, every guard knows: fear, not loyalty, keeps the peace.
The Guardhouse houses 300 guardsmen at a time with another 900 in rotation. So each guardsman works a three day shift before taking a three day break. In the event of an emergency all guardsmen can be activated at the same time. Guards are never female.
- #5Gallows & Stocks
Keys: gallows, stocks, pillory, public execution, public humiliation, public degradation,
The Gallows & Stocks stand in a crooked square near Grimholm’s heart — a place where justice and spectacle blur. The scaffold’s timbers are black with old rain and older blood, the ropes above swaying lazily in the wind. Stocks and pillory line the cobbles below, their occupants jeered by beggars and children alike. The stench of rot and smoke hangs heavy; ravens perch along the rooftops tormenting those below.
Public executions are held at the gallows whether it is by hanging, beheading, or any manner of horrible fate. Those saved from death may find themselves in the stocks or pillory for up to a week on display for all to see and use/abuse as they see fit.
- #6Grand Temple
Keys: temple, cathedral, church, basilica, Drowned Queen
The Grand Temple of the Drowned Queen dominates Grimholm’s center, its stone darkened by sea spray, soot, and time. Great chains anchor the structure to the bedrock below, for it’s said the tides once tried to claim it back. Inside, the air is damp and heavy with salt and devotion. A colossal statue of the busty Sea Goddess, crowned in coral, with a silken sash around her waist, and bearing a trident of black steel, looms above a churning pool that never stills. Worshipers kneel on slick stone, chanting over the roar of hidden waves. Offerings of pearls, blood, and driftwood float in the water—tokens to appease a deity who grants fortune to sailors and ruin to the faithless.
- #7Market District
Keys: market, shops, stores,
The market district thrums with desperate life beneath tattered awnings and oil lanterns. Merchants shout over the din, peddling spices, relics, and trinkets of dubious origin. The air reeks of sweat, salt, and roasted meat. Thieves drift through the crowd like smoke, and every deal feels half a heartbeat from betrayal. Even in decay, Grimholm’s market glitters—chaotic, hungry, alive.
Fishmongers, spice sellers, butchers, blacksmiths, and any manner of good needed by the city is found in the circular market district against the northern walls.
- #8Noble District
Keys: noble, nobles, upper class, nobility,
The noble district crowns Grimholm’s eastern rise, where mist rolls through courtyards of marble and ivy. Manors of white stone and glass overlook the Barbarous Coast, their windows glowing like watchful eyes. Perfumed air hides the rot beneath — intrigue, poison, and whispered scandal. Here, luxury is armor, overindulgence is the word of the day, and every smile conceals a blade. All manner of taboo is delivered here for those that grow tired of the mundane.
- #9Commoner District
Keys: commoners,
The southern commoner district outside the city wall presses against the edge of the Vesper Wood, where the air carries the forest’s chill breath. Cracked cobbles and crooked cottages huddle behind sagging fences, lanterns burning low against the mist. Superstition rules here—doors marked with runes, charms hung from every lintel. When the wind howls from the trees, even the bravest bar their shutters tight.
The gates from the inner city to the commoner's district close at night and only open for few exceptions.
- #10Slums
Keys: slums,
The eastern slums crawl along the docks, a tangle of rotting shacks and narrow alleys. The air reeks of brine, smoke, and unwashed bodies. Lanterns swing dimly, revealing children darting between barrels and sailors’ quarrels spilling into the fog. Crime, hunger, and despair thrive here, but so does stubborn survival.
- #11Slave Market
Keys: slaves, slaver,
The slave market sits in a grim plaza somewhere between the market district and the docks, its stones darkened by years of suffering. Shackles clink as traders display captives of all ages, their faces pale with fear. The men and boys will most likely end up in the city silver mines wearing their minds and bodies down to the marrow. The women and girls, if they are lucky, may find themselves indentured to a house as a maid or service, and at worst purchased for pleasure by wealthy citizens or one of the many brothels in Grimholm. Crowds jeer or bargain over the naked bodies like livestock, while guards watch with impassive eyes. The air smells of sweat, smoke, and quiet desperation.
The slaves on offer rotate out every week. Slaves are ranked like meat: Prime (highest), Choice (high), and Select (average), Standard (low), and Utility (lowest). At any time there are at least 20 slaves on auction with many more in reserve. They are captured from military conquest, local lands (savages, etc), sold as children to keep the parents out of debt, or forced into slavery for their debts or as criminal punishment.
- #12City Wall
Keys: city walls, city wall, outer wall,
The city walls rise like dark teeth around Aramor, weathered stone slick with rain and moss. Battlements bristle with watchtowers, arrow slits, and the occasional lantern flickering in fog. From atop, guards scan the Moorlands, coast, and woods, ever alert to threats, while the walls themselves hum with centuries of blood, siege, and shadowed secrets.
- #13Silver Mines
Keys: mines, silver,
The silver mines of Raventhorne Ridge tunnel deep beneath the black spires of the Keep. Jagged stone walls glint with veins of ore, while timbered supports groan under centuries of weight. Lanterns cast long, trembling shadows over miners’ weary faces, and the air smells of sweat, stone, and the faint tang of blood from old accidents long forgotten. Worker and slave alike toil here all day and night to meet the quotas handed down from Duke Raventhorne.
- #14Vesper Forest
Keys: woods, vesper wood, forest, south
The Vesper Wood stretches dark and silent to Aramor’s south, its twisted trees blocking sun and sky. Fog coils between gnarled roots, and shadows seem to move with intent. Strange whispers drift on the wind, and hunters rarely return unchanged. Every step feels watched, every path a choice between secrets… and peril. Hushed voices speak of monsters, elves, moving trees, and dangers in the old forest.
- #15Northern Moorlands
Keys: Moor, Moorlands, swamp, bog, north
The Northern Moorlands stretch wild and unforgiving, home to savage barbarian tribes and whispered ghosts of the dead. Mist rolls over bogs and jagged stones, hiding raiding parties and spectral figures alike. Travelers shiver at every howl and flicker in the fog, for the land itself hungers as much as its tribes. Scouts tell of a Savage King gathering an army to try and reclaim Grimholm, whether that is true or simply mad ravings is unsure.
- #16Barbarous Coast
Keys: coast, beach, sea, east
The Barbarous Coast lashes against jagged cliffs, waves roaring in devotion to the Drowned Queen. Black-sailed ships heave in storm-tossed waters, and wrecks litter the shore as offerings to her wrath. Salt, brine, and the scent of sacrifice fill the air, while sailors whisper prayers to survive her tide.
- #17Wilds
Keys: wilds,
The wilds beyond Grimholm are a tangled expanse of forest, bog, and jagged hills, where roads vanish and savages and beasts rule. Mist hides ruins and predators alike, while the wind carries whispers of lost travelers. Here, survival is a gamble, and the land itself seems alive, watching, waiting, and never forgiving.
- #18Northern Kingdom
Keys: kingdom
The Northern Kingdom stretches cold and untamed, a realm of jagged mountains, shadowed forests, and wind-swept plains. Its rulers are distant, its laws unevenly enforced, and rumors of ancient feuds and hidden powers ripple through every corner. Grimholm clings to its edges, loyal yet wary.
- #19Raventhorne Keep
Keys: Raventhorne Keep, Keep
Raventhorne Keep looms like a crown over Grimholm, built from pale stone that’s weathered hard by northern winds. Its towers are sturdy rather than ornate, built for watching, not welcoming. Inside, the corridors are opulent, practical, and efficient. From its height, the Duke oversees the silver mines below and the city beyond, a constant reminder of who holds power in Grimholm.
- #20Great Hall
Keys: great hall, dining hall, throne room, throne
Polished marble floors, veined in silver, stretch beneath gaudy banners dyed in the green house colors in quantities no honest dye-maker could afford. Chandeliers drip with crystal droplets that catch the firelight and scatter it in restless sparks. The long feasting tables are carved from iron wood and lacquered to a shine, each leg sculpted into snarling fantastic beasts.
At the far end sits Raventhorne’s throne: oversized, over-gilded, and so encrusted with silver filigree it’s practically shouting for attention. The hall is warm, bright, and suffocating in its excess—an unmistakable reminder that the Duke’s vanity is as heavy as his rule.
- #21Duke's Chambers
The Duke’s chambers are a shrine to his ego—silk-draped canopy bed, mirrors framed in beaten silver, and a great dire wolf rug so thick it swallows footsteps whole. Every surface gleams, every detail screams importance. Perfumed braziers haze the air while silver-inlaid furniture crowds the room, turning his private quarters into a monument to excess rather than rest.
The bath chamber is absurdly lavish: a deep stone tub lined with polished silver, fed by heated channels from below. Mosaic walls shimmer with tiny tiles depicting the Duke’s victories—real or imagined. Plush towels, scented oils, and carved ivory fixtures clutter the space, making even a simple bath feel like a royal parade of self-worship.
- #22Guest Wing
Keys: guest wing
The guest wing is comfortable but calculated—broad stone corridors, tidy chambers, and just enough luxury to impress without empowering. Soft beds, warm hearths, and decent furnishings create a veneer of hospitality, yet every window is narrow, every door heavy, and knights linger a bit too close. Visitors rest well, but never forget whose territory they’re in.
- #23Service Wing
Keys: service wing, servants
The service wing is a tight, bustling maze—heat from the kitchens, steam from the laundry, and the constant shuffle of overworked staff. Larders are packed and chilly, kitchens roaring with fires and clattering pans. Quarters are cramped but orderly, built for sleep, not comfort. Everything here runs fast, quiet, and entirely for the Duke’s convenience at the leadership of the Keep Steward.
- #24Knight Barracks
Keys: knight barracks, barracks
The knight barracks are plain, disciplined, and close to the armory—rows of sturdy bunks, weapon racks kept razor-neat, and a training yard just outside. The air smells of steel, sweat, and oiled leather. No frills, no indulgence; just the hard efficiency of soldiers who know their real comfort is surviving the Duke’s expectations.
- #25Keep Gardens
Keys: gardens, greenhouse
The gardens circle an extravagant glasshouse—iron-ribbed, jewel-bright, impossible to miss. Hardy northern shrubs line the paths, but inside the greenhouse, exotic blooms thrive in humid warmth. Rare colors, rare scents, all curated to show off the Duke’s wealth. It’s less a garden and more a brag whispered in petals and glass.
- #26High Tower
Keys: tower
The High Tower rises above the keep like a lone sentinel—narrow stairs, wind-cut balconies, and a cramped chamber at its peak. From there, the whole of Grimholm and the distant moors lie exposed. It’s a place for strategy, surveillance, and the Duke’s quiet arrogance, not comfort.
- #27Private Study
Keys: study, sitting room, office
The Duke’s study is a controlled display of power—towering bookshelves, a massive silver-trimmed desk, and maps pinned with far too many ambitions. Rich carpets mute every step, while an overlarge window frames the city like a trophy. It’s indulgent, intimidating, and unmistakably his.
- #28Kennels & Stables
Keys: kennels, stables,
The stables and kennels are rugged and well-kept—rows of sturdy stalls, the smell of hay and leather, and hounds pacing behind iron-barred runs. Grooms work fast, horses gleam with strict care, and the Duke’s prized warhounds get more attention than most servants though it isn't unheard of to find one or more slaves caged here. It’s all discipline, noise, and readiness for whatever command comes next.
- #29Dungeon
Keys: dungeon
The dungeon sprawls beneath the Keep in a cold warren of stone corridors, iron doors, and dripping arches. Cells are cramped and uneven, carved straight from the bedrock, their bars thick enough to hold anything with a pulse. Torchlight struggles to reach the corners, leaving shadows that feel far too inhabited. Chains hang from walls, tools sit on grim wooden tables, and the air hums with the metallic bite of old suffering. It’s not a place for secrets—it’s where secrets are broken.
- #30Duke Raventhorne
Keys: duke
Rules over the duchy of Grimholm. Charged with managing the silver mine for King Montagne, protecting the duchy of Grimholm from savages and beasts, and serving as royal courtier to his sister Queen Raventhorne. Duke Raventhorne stands six feet tall and built like a man who’s won more fights than he’s delegated—broad shoulders, thick arms, and a presence that fills a room before he speaks. Black, shoulder-length hair frames a stern face marked by stone-gray eyes that assess everything and forgive nothing. He dresses in silvers and deep greens, all tailored to showcase his strength and status. Approaching middle age hasn’t softened him; it’s only honed the edge. His demeanor is domineering, mysterious, and often immoral.
- #31Queen Raventhorne
Keys: queen
Queen Raventhorne carries the same striking presence as her brother, but sharpened into elegance rather than intimidation. In her thirties, she’s poised, calculating, and effortlessly regal—long dark hair, cool gray eyes, and a taste for silvers and forest greens that echo her bloodline. She moves with deliberate grace, every gesture measured, every word chosen like a blade. Married to King Montagne, she’s far more than a royal ornament; she’s the quiet storm behind the throne, watching the realm with a mind as dangerous as any army.
Queen Raventhorne, like her brother, has aspirations beyond her current status but also understands when to play her part and when to scheme. She's often sending correspondence to her brother for one thing or another.
- #32King Montagne
King Montagne looks every inch the ruler who’s spent half his life on battlefields and the other half regretting it. Middle-aged and carrying more weight than his armor ever allowed, he moves with the stiff caution of old wounds. His face is lined, his eyes tired but still sharp when duty demands it. Beneath the fatigue sits a stubborn strength—he’s a man who’s endured too much to be underestimated, even if the crown now weighs heavier than any sword he ever swung.
King Montagne trusts Duke Raventhorne's ability to accomplish the duties assigned to him but not his ambition. The King is often sending increasingly harsh quotas of silver, whale blubber, and slaves to see if he can find his breaking point.
- #33Keep Steward
Keys: steward, advisor, estate,
A high-ranking official managing the Duke's vast estate, acting as the Duke's trusted deputy, overseeing finances, legal matters, large projects, and daily operations, administration of servants, essentially running the household and lands at the Duke's direction, ensuring order, productivity, and responsible use of resources. The Steward is a woman in her 30s with fire orange hair pulled up in a high bun at all times. She is strict and quick to punish servants that step out of line. She is not afraid to tell the Duke what she thinks even when she disagrees with him.
- #34Knight Commander
Keys: commander, knight commander, vesper
Right hand man to the Duke. Commands the Vesper Knights who are sworn to serve Duke Raventhorne. Generally follows orders without question. Wears garish black half-plate armor without a helmet and wields a unique warhammer. The Knight Commander is a noble past his prime with thinning dark gray hair and blue eyes.
- #35Vesper Knights
Keys: knight, knights
Knights directly under the leadership of Duke Raventhorne responsible for carrying out his orders and protecting his estate. The Vesper Knights are the Duke’s elite—disciplined, ruthless, and utterly loyal. Clad in dark steel trimmed with muted silver, they wield broad shields and heavy blades built for breaking lines, not showing mercy. Each knight is chosen from years of brutal service, hardened by drills that blur the line between training and punishment. They ride under the green-and-silver raven banner, striking fast, hitting hard, and leaving no doubt whose will they enforce.
- #36Servant Etiquette
Keys: Etiquette
Servants and slaves alike within Raventhorne Keep will always advert their eyes to the floor when speaking to their betters unless otherwise directed. They will courtesy (is female) or bow (if male) at the beginning and end of each interaction with those they serve. Servants and slaves will always refer to the Duke as "my Lord" and will show respect for all staff above their station including the knights. Servants and slaves are expected to be swift, exact, and disciplined without fault. Servants and slaves that fail to follow proper etiquette will be punished with the punishment depending on the severity of the infraction.
- #37Elves
Keys: elves, elf
Elves encountered in the Vesper Wood are wild and unsettling—tall, lithe beings with a beauty that feels more like a warning than a gift. Their eyes shine with colors not found in mortal blood, and their movements glide between elegant and predatory. They speak in whispers that echo like distant winds, vanish as easily as breath on glass, and view humans with the detached curiosity of creatures who’ve outlived empires. Forests warp around their presence, shadows cling to them, and their smiles never quite reach their eyes.
- #38Barbarians
Keys: barbarian, savage,
The northern barbarians are brutal survivors shaped by endless cold and harsher lives. Broad-shouldered, scarred, and draped in furs, they wield heavy iron weapons that look half-forged, half-ripped from the earth. Their clans follow strength above all—chieftains rise by blood, not birth. They paint their faces with ash and hunt like wolves, moving through snowstorms as if born from them. To outsiders they seem savage, but their cruelty is deliberate, honed by generations of fighting ice, hunger, and anything foolish enough to cross their frozen borders.
The barbarians of the north crave to claim the city of Grimholm and have mounted raid after raid in past years probing the Duke's duchy for weakness.
- #39Monsters
Keys: monsters, beasts,
This world crawls with things better left unnamed. In the deep woods, antler-crowned horrors stalk on too-long limbs, their cries mimicking lost travelers. Moorland bogs hide pale, swollen wights that drag victims under with quiet, patient strength. Coastal cliffs spawn scaled brutes that climb like spiders and smell of brine and rot. In forgotten ruins, bone-stitched abominations lurk—creatures shaped by old magic and older malice. Even the night sky isn’t safe; winged shadows wheel above, silent hunters that leave nothing but shredded tracks and missing faces. Here, monsters aren’t rare—they’re the ecosystem.
