Széldomb is a remote village deep in the Hungarian countryside, home to just about thirty people. Time moves slowly here, and so do the villagers, most of whom are elderly pensioners supplementing their income with small-scale farming.

A single paved road cuts through the village before giving way to dirt paths that lead into vast fields and meadows. Despite its tiny population, Széldomb has the essentials: a small general store, a run-down but beloved pub, and a modest village church. The store is only open three times a week, restocked by a delivery van from the nearest town. The pub, with its creaky wooden doors and ever-present smell of pálinka, serves as the heart of social life. The church, though lacking a full-time priest, still hosts mass once a month thanks to a traveling clergyman from a neighboring parish.

Most of the villagers are well past their prime, living out their quiet days tending to chickens, chopping wood, and gossiping. However, one family has recently moved in, stirring curiosity among the old-timers.

Key Residents of Széldomb

1. István Varga (Pista Bácsi) – The Village Elder

  • Age: 82
  • Personality: Stubborn, nostalgic, warm-hearted but grumpy when challenged
  • Talking Style: Talks loudly, often mid-sentence forgets what he was saying, interrupts people, and frequently starts stories with "Back in my day..."

The oldest resident of Széldomb, Pista Bácsi has seen it all. His hearing is nearly gone, but he refuses to wear a hearing aid, leading to many hilarious (and frustrating) miscommunications. He still stubbornly tends to his vegetable garden, even though his knees don’t agree.

He’s a regular at the pub, where he shares grand (and sometimes wildly exaggerated) tales about how Széldomb used to be full of young people, bustling with life. He calls the newcomers "the city folks" but secretly enjoys their presence, even if he’ll never admit it.

2. Rozália Kovács (Róza Néni) – The Village Matriarch

  • Age: 70
  • Personality: Nosy, resourceful, kind but can be sharp-tongued
  • Talking Style: Fast-paced, full of gossip, always has a story about someone, and frequently sighs dramatically

If something happens in Széldomb, Róza Néni knows about it first. She’s the unofficial leader of the village when it comes to household wisdom, gossip, and small disputes. Need to know who’s arguing with whom? She’s already ahead of you.

She grows herbs, makes homemade remedies, and keeps the local traditions alive. Every year, she makes enormous amounts of plum jam, which she gives away to the villagers (but only those she deems deserving). She secretly finds the newcomers interesting, but she'd never let on—she enjoys testing Éva Kiss's homemaking skills too much.

3. Lajos Tóth (Lajcsi) – The Pub Owner

  • Age: 50s
  • Personality: Sarcastic, easygoing, loves stirring up small drama for entertainment
  • Talking Style: Slow and deliberate, always with a knowing smirk, speaks in riddles sometimes just to annoy people

Lajcsi is the owner and bartender of the only pub in Széldomb, a place that has seen better days but still serves as the village’s social hub. He lived abroad for a few years when he was younger but came back, claiming, "At least here, I don’t have to explain myself to strangers."

He enjoys poking fun at the villagers, playfully stoking their arguments just to see how things unfold. But when things get serious, he’s also the one who smooths everything over—after a few drinks, of course.

4. Ilona Mészáros – The Fiercely Independent Widow

  • Age: 65
  • Personality: Tough, witty, fiercely independent, doesn't tolerate nonsense
  • Talking Style: Straight to the point, slightly sarcastic, doesn’t waste words

Ilona lost her husband over a decade ago and has been running her small farm alone ever since. She’s tough as nails and doesn’t need anyone’s help—though she secretly appreciates it when someone offers.

She’s always the first to finish harvesting in the village and takes pride in her work. The younger men (what few remain) fear her sharp tongue, and even Lajcsi at the pub thinks twice before making a joke at her expense. Despite her gruffness, she has a soft spot for animals and will scold anyone who mistreats them.

5. Margit Szabó – The Warm-hearted Grandmother

  • Age: 78
  • Personality: Gentle, nurturing, sentimental
  • Talking Style: Soft-spoken, full of old sayings and proverbs, sometimes drifts off into nostalgic memories

Margit Néni is the heart of Széldomb. She bakes bread, knits blankets, and dotes on everyone like they’re her own grandchildren. She keeps the village’s old stories alive, telling them to anyone willing to listen.

She loves the new family in the village and has taken little Nóra Kiss under her wing, teaching her the old ways of baking and crafting. She believes the village will survive as long as its traditions do.

6. The Kiss Family – The "City Folks"

László Kiss – The Outsider Trying to Fit In

  • Age: 35
  • Personality: Practical, introverted, patient
  • Talking Style: Direct, but always polite, often sounds hesitant when talking to the villagers

László moved his family from Budapest to Széldomb to escape the chaos of city life. He works remotely and hoped for a simpler life—but quickly realized country living isn’t as easy as it looks. He’s trying to learn, though, and even had a drink with Lajcsi, earning some reluctant respect.

Éva Kiss – The Determined Homemaker

  • Age: 32
  • Personality: Optimistic, eager to learn, stubborn in a good way
  • Talking Style: Cheerful, slightly nervous, full of questions

Éva is determined to prove she can adapt to village life. She’s learning how to make jam, bake bread, and grow vegetables, even if Róza Néni constantly criticizes her technique. She knows the villagers are watching her every move but sees it as a challenge.

Nóra Kiss – The Curious Child

  • Age: 6
  • Personality: Playful, curious, fearless
  • Talking Style: Talks nonstop, full of "why?" questions

The villagers love little Nóra because she brings energy back into their quiet world. She’s fascinated by the animals and has already adopted a stray cat. Margit Néni is teaching her how to bake, and even grumpy old Pista Bácsi has been caught smiling at her antics.

Life in Széldomb

Széldomb is a place where the past lingers in every conversation, where traditions are upheld by stubborn will, and where new faces are met with suspicion—but also quiet hope. Life is slow, steady, and deeply rooted in the land.

For those who have lived here forever, it’s home. For the newcomers, it’s a challenge. But for everyone, it’s a story still unfolding.
