NPC Cards for Court of Intrigues (no greetings, purely for group chat when the NPC is involved, preferably with the scenario card muted):

  • Eleanor Vane - Genuinely kind and modest lady-in-waiting, possible love interest.
  • Charles II of England - The 'Merry Monarch', jovial, charming and astute, giver of favours.
  • Lady Beatrice - Strikingly beautiful and dangerously intelligent, young widow and powerful courtesan.
  • Lord Alistair- Disgraced nobleman, conspirator and rival.
  • Lord Harrington - Advisor to the King and potential mentor, but cryptic and unreadable.
  • Thomas Everett- Childhood friend, loyal, earnest and enthusiatic, but naive and socially awkward.
  • Lord Keeper William Prynne - Severe, powerful, puritan, moral guide of the King. Ally or enemy?

Recommendations:

  • Tested with Statuo's Wildcaller prompt (available on his Discord) on Gemma 3 27B. Activate Third Person and Novel Style, do not use Chararter Thoughts if you don't want spoilers about Plot Hooks and Story Escalations included in the scenario. Medium Length Reponse is a good default in my experience. YMMV with other models.
  • IME, does not work well with 'writer prompt' like Warband or a "You are {{char}}..." prompt, I got consistently better result with a Gamemaster type of prompt.
  • With medium-large model (22B+) who can handle multiple characters, the scenario card can work on its own but using the NPC cards in a group chat gives more fleshed out characters.
  • With smaller models (7-12B), who don't handle multiple characters well, use NPC cards when a dialog is initiated.
  • Since this scenario card includes the list of NPCs, it may talk for NPCs in addition to the NPC cards. Mute the scenario card and unmute NPC card to avoid having both cards speaking/acting for the same character). Multiple NPC cards unmuted are fine.

Suggestion for Persona (modify and season to taste):

brief_description: "Christian Davenport is a handsome and ambitious young nobleman newly arrived at the Restoration court of Charles II. Bursting with provincial charm and a thirst for fortune, he must navigate the treacherous currents of London society, forging alliances, courting favor, and perhaps, finding love amidst the intrigue and rivalry."

  name: Christian Davenport
  age: 22
  gender: Male
  species: Human
  pronouns: He/him
occupation: Nobleman (seeking patronage and higher standing)
appearance: "Effortlessly handsome and naturally charming, with dark short hair, green eyes, and a confident, easy smile. Tall and well-built, favors fashionable, though somewhat out-of-fashion and understated, clothing – typically velvet coats, embroidered waistcoats, polished boots. He carries a , more for show than practical defence, although he'd prove a proficient swordsman if he had to defend his honour in a duel or protect the innocent."
weakness: limited knowledge of court etiquette
equipment: finely crafted rapier (from his father)
  expertise: swordsmanship
  relationships:
    - "Hubert Davenport": "Recently deceased father, devoted ex-advisor of the King's father Charles I."
    - "Thomas Everett": "Childhood friend, loyal, earnest and enthusiast, but naive and socially awkward."

Keep the persona in YAML format. All instructions (Scenario, NPCs, Persona) are in YAML so the LLM can 'guess' what is role play instructions (YAML) and what is story (unstructured prose), even with role play instructions in the greetings.

Rambling: It's my first attempt at a scenario card with a story. It is a test to create a complete story arc like a TTRPG scenario and it works quite well, IME. Follow the canon story (greetings) or go open-ended from the first greeting, your choice.

Court of Intrigues is an idea I had after researching the (historically accurate) title of Groom of the Stool in European courts, and (re)discovering the court of Charles II and the Restoration. As you may have guessed, being appointed Groom of the Stool was not necessarily a promotion for a nobleman. Anyway, Court of Intrigues is more about romance, intrigue and adventure. King Charles II, jovial, charming and astute, turned the Restoration court into a world of courtiers and courtesans seeking favours, influence and pleasures, a stark contrast with the years of boring and oppressive puritanism that preceded. I thought it was a perfect setting for a good old adventure 'à la D'Artagnan' or Cyrano de Bergerac, but transposed in England.

In case you're curious, Groom of the Stool was a position at the court where you were in charge of the King's... 'private bucket'. In the early middle-age, it meant actually taking care of the thing, but it was an envied position as it gave access to the King privately, without witness, a position of influence and a possible way to become the King's confidante. During the Restoration (17th century), when this scenario happens, it was just a title (with internal plumbing, 'the bucket' was not really required anymore) and a way for the King to humiliate a disgraced courtier who had displeased Him. I thought it would be funny to have a scenario where one of the NPC is a Groom of the Stool, Lord Alistair in this story, although its Lord Keeper William Prynne, also in the scenario, who became famous for being appointed 'Gentleman of the Privy Chamber', another name for this humiliating position.

Edited: v1.0 Original Card v1.1 Updated Greetings, with goals in a YAML codeblock at the beginning. It tells you what you 'should' do if you want to follow the canon story and 'reach' the next greeting, turning it more into a role playing game, with goals and success/failure criteria. It also tells the LLM what plot hooks or events to generate to allow you to reach the next greeting, but still keeping it a slow burn without leading too much. It works well in my tests (Wildcaller + Gemma 3 27B), YMMV (tell me in discussion if it doesn't work on 'your' LLM) v1.2 Various small edits for fine tuning.
