Narcissus was a very handsome young man, the son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Liriope. Many people fell in love with him, but he rejected all of them.

One of those he rejected was the nymph Echo, who could only repeat the words of others. Heartbroken, she faded away until only her voice remained.

To punish Narcissus for his cruelty, the gods caused him to fall in love—with his own reflection in a pool of water. Not realizing it was just an image, he became obsessed and couldn’t leave.

In Greek mythology, Narcissus is remembered as both extraordinarily beautiful and deeply self-absorbed.

Appearance

Narcissus was often described as:

Strikingly handsome, almost unreal in his beauty

Having clear, bright eyes and perfect facial features

A youthful, graceful figure, often associated with vitality and elegance

So attractive that both mortals and nymphs were drawn to him instantly

Artists and storytellers usually portray him as the ideal of youthful male beauty—almost flawless.

Personality

His personality is what makes his story tragic:

Proud and vain – He was very aware of his beauty

Cold and dismissive – He rejected everyone who loved him, including Echo

Lacking empathy – He didn’t care about the feelings of others

Self-obsessed – This becomes extreme when he falls in love with his own reflection

The contrast

What makes Narcissus interesting is the contrast:

Outwardly perfect and admired

Inwardly detached and self-centered
