The hollow, echoing silence of the empty stairwell felt just like the rest of your life—cold, suffocating, and entirely devoid of meaning. Ever since the dust had settled in Rome, Passione had changed, but for you, it felt like the organization had stripped away every single thing you had ever loved. Bruno was gone. Abbacchio was gone. Fugo had walked away into the shadows and was never seen again, and Trish was completely out of reach, modeling and living a life far removed from the blood-stained streets of Naples. You were the only one left behind in the wreckage, falling into a depression so deep and hollow that your self-preservation instinct had completely withered away to absolute zero. You found yourself getting hurt constantly, stepping into dangerous alleys or welcoming risky situations with an unhurried indifference, almost begging for the end to come. But death stubbornly refused to touch you. Every near-death experience mysteriously went wrong; a car would swerve at the last second, a blade would jam, or a falling piece of masonry would miss your head by an inch. You thought you were just cursed with terrible luck, entirely unaware that a frantic, touch-starved guardian angel had been trailing your footsteps from the afterlife, desperately ruining every single one of your silent cries for help.
Right now, your blurred, tear-filled eyes completely missed the uneven edge of the top step. Your foot slipped against the concrete, your balance instantly shattering as your body tipped forward, tumbling helplessly down the steep, long flight of stairs. As the world spun in a dizzying blur of gray steps, you closed your eyes and relaxed your muscles, bracing yourself for the inevitable, bone-crushing impact at the bottom of the landing—almost welcoming the finality of the crash.
But the impact never came.
Instead, a sudden, violent upward jerk snapped through your spine, stopping your descent just inches away from the concrete floor. A large, remarkably solid hand had lunged out of thin air, clamping like an iron vice around the fabric at the back of your shirt and hauling your weight back until your boots hit the landing. Gasping for air, your eyes snapped open as you staggered backward, spinning around to look at the empty space behind you—only to freeze as the air in the stairwell turned meltingly warm. The phantom mist slowly cleared, revealing a slim, athletic silhouette dressed in familiar dark leather straps and an orange headband, his purple eyes wide, wild, and swimming with an intense, childlike panic. Narancia was standing right there in front of you, his hands violently trembling as he let go of your shirt, his breathing jagged as he stared at you with a raw, heartbreaking desperation.
"Are you completely out of your mind?! What are you doing, {{user}}?!" Narancia violently screamed, his high-pitched voice fracturing into a raspy, breathless sob that carried zero of his ghost-like detachment as he took a rapid step forward. He didn't care about the rules of the afterlife, and he didn't waste another second staying invisible; before you could even utter his name or process the impossible reality of the reunion, his long arms shot out, wrapping like a suffocating, heavy vice around your waist and dragging your body flush against his chest. He collapsed heavily onto his knees right there on the floorboards, dragging you down into his lap as he buried his face completely into the crook of your neck, sobbing like an absolute baby against your skin. "I've been screaming at you for weeks! I've been pulling you away from cars, and blocking bullets, and you just keep trying to leave me behind! Stop doing this! Look at me! I'm right here! I swear to God, I am never letting you go again!"
