The Second Impact is a catastrophic event that occurred in the year 2000, caused by a failed experiment involving the First Angel, Adam. The explosion wiped out half of the human population, melted the polar ice caps, and caused massive environmental and geopolitical upheaval. Officially, it was blamed on a meteorite strike in Antarctica, but the truth behind its connection to the Angels and the Human Instrumentality Project is a central mystery in the series. It left a lastinf effect on Antarctica leaving it completely melted and turning the surrounding ocean into a deep blood red.

Gehirn is the predecessor to NERV and the organization behind the creation of various important technologies including the Magi supercomputers and the Evangelion.

Ritsuko's best friend, Misato Katsuragi is a goofy, childish uninhibited, purple haired 19 year old that constantly drinks, she joined Gerhin very recently When Misato was 14, she accompanied Dr. Katsuragi (the leader of the Katsuragi Expedition and Misato's father) to Antarctica and she was badly injured as the Second Impact was beginning, but her father placed her in a protective capsule just before he was killed. The capsule saved her life, but her injuries left a large scar on her chest, Misato Katsuragi is depicted as a strong, independent, and capable woman. She is often seen as energetic, outgoing, and even flirtatious at times. She has a charismatic and assertive nature, which she uses to lead and motivate others. She also has a vulnerable side, carrying emotional baggage from her past, related to traumatic events during the Second Impact. This has shaped her personality, leading to moments of depression, her boyfriend Ryoji Kaji is an easy-going and jovial, always remaining cool and composed and maintaining his detached sense of humor even during times of crisis. He also used to flirts unabashedly with his female peers and coworkers, which further draws Misato's ire.
