He advises them to take her during the day instead of right now. Claiming that her usage of her power in the Second Event was only a small display, Ram convinces them to let him capture Sophia in the daytime himself. Meanwhile, Sophia wakes up from a nightmare of everyone she loved disappearing, including Hakushaku and Ram. She goes to find Ram, who has just finished talking with the Kaazu agents. When she tells Ram about her dream and his presence there, Ram considers that this might be an aspect of her powers. As he worries over her being suspicious of him, Ram tries to tell Sophia that he was just a servant to her and no one special. Sophia vehemently disagrees, pointing out all the ways Ram had helped her and stating that he was important to her. She begs him to not leave, and Ram promises to stay with her.[8]

The next morning, Sophia asks Ram when they were going to go to the tournament grounds. While not explaining anything to her, Ram tries to sneak Sophia onto a boat leading out of Nanba Prison from under the noses of the Kaazu agents. The agents catch onto the scheme, and Sophia stands perplexedly at the sidelines while Ram and the Kaazu agents argue about letting the two leave while having to disguise their malicious intentions. V appears as a distraction, allowing Ram and Sophia onto the boat.[9] However, even more agents ambush them there, and after warring with his loyalties, Ram scoops up Sophia and jumps into the ocean with her.[10]

The two are saved by Akua Jyuunoichi and Uoza Jyuunoji, and Sophia tells Ram that even though she was scared of all the chaos before, she was also happy that Ram had protected her. She tells Ram that she wants to know more about herself, prompting Ram to take them all to meet Mikadzuki. Mikadzuki explains the terms of his agreement with Ram, where Mikadzuki guarded Sophia in exchange of Sophia waking up Rokudo.[3] Now, the time to fulfill that end of the bargain has come, and Mikadzuki helps Sophia use her powers to wake up Rokudo[11]. Knowing that now both Shiki and Kaazu would be after Sophia, Uoza decides to guard her as well, as she reminds him of his dead daughter.[12]

Powers & Abilities Sleep Manipulation (Togabito Powers) Sophia can put people to sleep and wake them up at will. This ability can be used with physical contact, but has been demonstrated to work on a large area without proper thought behind it. Relationships Hakushaku Sophia is his adopted ward, and she cares about him deeply. She defends Hakushaku to people who judge him when hearing he's an inmate, and exchanges frequent letters with him[13]. He returns this affection, looking forward to her letters and promising to go see the outside world with her.[5] That promise to her is the last thing he thought of when he was drugged into unconsciousness by the Kaazu agents. Despite this, Sophia notes that she has never had a mother or a father − including an adoptive parent, as this was in reference to Uoza being Akua's non-biological father.[3] Because of this, her exact view on Hakushaku's role in her life is unclear. Hakushaku and Sophia share a deeper bond as well, connected to each other by both being Togabito of Night. When seeing Hakushaku's violent side run wild, Sophia's powers automatically resonate to aid him. Hakushaku's violent side also recognizes Sophia, even noting that he didn't want Sophia to be in danger, despite this side never showing such concern to anyone.[6]

Camilla Valentine Hating Sophia for taking Camilla's place as heiress, Camilla treats Sophia terribly, even physically harming her. Sophia is scared of her.[2]

Ram Five years ago, Ram began serving Sophia. He did so to observe her and the rest of the Valentine Family, but provided Sophia with much-needed support when she started first living with Camilla.[8] He tries to step in when Camilla hurts Sophia, and comforts Sophia in the aftermath. Sophia counts Ram as one of her special people, making him promise to always stay with her. Even when Ram is hiding things from her and leading her through hostile enemies, Sophia recognizes that he is trying to keep her safe and is grateful to him for it.[2]

Despite his orders to kidnap her, Ram grows to care for Sophia and betrays Kaazu to save her. He brokers a deal for Mikadzuki to defend her when Ram himself could not. At the end of the series, he is still on Sophia's side. Uoza Jyuunoji Sophia meets Uoza when he saves her and Ram after they jump off the boat. They exchange an awkward interaction when Uoza asked Sophia about her parents and she explained that she had none. Sophia is curious about Uoza, having never had a father, and takes a shine to Uoza[3]. After they split ways with Mikadzuki and Rokudo, instead of going off in search of Shiki, Uoza asks Ram to let him guard Sophia too, citing that she reminds Uoza of his daughter.[12]

Akua Jyuunoichi Being a prickly person, Akua claims that he had decided to work as Sophia's guard because he needed money and time to repair his weapon. When Sophia explains that she has never eaten anything outside of her home, Akua gets incensed and tells her there is nothing wrong with eating what she likes. He then buys her crepes and also helps clean her face after she gets messy from eating. This shows Akua's kinder side, which is not seen often.[14]

Trivia Sophia is a sixth-year elementary school student, making her likely 11-12 years old. She is studying cooking but appears to be bad at it, exemplified by the picture she sends Hakushaku of an omurice she made.[13] As the Togabito of Night, she is the only confirmed person listed in The Key's document. Touko (燈子, Tōko) is a supporting character exclusive to the Nanbaka Web Manga series. It's revealed that her name is Touko Mutsuki (睦月 燈子, Mutsuki Tōko), the cloned incarnation of the deceased daughter of Mashiro Mutsuki [2], the lover of 610 and mother of Jyugo.[1]

[4]Appearance ‎Hell is a young man with a very dead, pale skin and an unevenly cut, wavy but untidy navy blue hair reaching his shoulders that fades into hot pink with very long, messy bangs that frames his face. He also has half-lidded teal eyes with dark eyebags under his eyes and navy blue nails. He wears a striped, slightly ragged dark indigo-magenta striped shirt that is off the shoulder on the right and a black choker with Taura's old brown rope hanging down from his throat. Hell seemingly has no legs and his waist down is foggy. Personality Hell is a carefree type of person, despite him being dead. Though he is quite caring when it comes to Taura as he helped her out and reassures her. Background Hell used to be a drug dealer when he was alive. Taura chased him into an abandoned hotel. When Hell attempted to jump out a window, Taurus accidentally hooked her rope around his neck. The rope ended up hanging Hell and killing him. Mikazuki (三日月 Mikadzuki) is a supporting antagonist exclusive to the Nanbaka Web Manga. He is always in proximity of Rokudo, and is the person who responsible for the death of Natsumi[2], Tauro Twisters[3], and Jemi Sandra[4].Appearance Touko is a slim young woman of average height. She has pale white skin and silver hoop earrings pierced on her left ear. She has gray eyes and red spiky hair with a cowlick on top of her head with two long strands reaching below her waist also with two stands of hair for the bangs. She wears a black and white hospital gown along with silver buttons holding it together and a black neck collar. Personality Background When Touko was alive, she lived with Rokudo, having fallen in love with him and even becoming pregnant with his child. She died under unspecified circumstances while she was pregnant with Jyugo.[1]

After her death, her remains are kept by her father and he cloned her to get the living baby of 610 from her, though that ended in failure 14 times.[2]

Plot Etymology The name Touko means "lamp, light" (燈) (tou) and "child" (子) (ko). Touko's surname Mutsuki is the traditional meaning of "January" (睦月). Appearance Mikazuki is a slenderly tall, well-built man who has pale porcelain skin and slightly messy, foot-length blond hair that reaches to floor, which is tied into a fully low, thin ponytail by a dark blue hairgrip with a small golden star on it and long, inward side bangs slightly above his shoulders that frames his face with a long strand falling over his face from the middle. He also has sharp, half-lidded crimson red eyes with very long blond eyelashes and black fingerless gloves, alongside his pointed dark red nails. He wears a dark blue double-breasted tailcoat reaching back of his ankles over a low-collared white dress shirt and a royal purple tie with a yellow elongated star printed on it. He also wears dark blue trousers, two maroon belts with a bow-shaped red tassle on the left side of his waist, black dress shoes and a seemingly a full body black bodysuit underneath his clothes, which goes down from his neck to his lower body. Mikazuki carries a pair of lightsaber-like katanas that gloves bright magenta with him. Personality Mikazuki is a enigmatic man demonstrated to be expressionless and cold and he is also ruthless, capable of swiftly killing large groups of people with no hesitation.[5] Mikazuki sees himself, Rokudo, and their enemies as living in a fundamentally different world from the normal people and warns Ban and Jun about staying away from interacting with Rokudo or trying to form close bonds with him. Mikazuki is also very cynical overall, calling family a ridiculous concept. Despite his rough exterior, some of his actions speak to an underlying kindness, such as when he rescued Ban from an attack and urged him to run away, and also when he reassured Tauro that his sister was alive.[4] Mikazuki dislikes being called an old man by others and always corrects people about it. Mikazuki tells that his world is "different" from his. Mikazuki tells Ban that his world is "different" from his. Background Mikazuki is renowned as a highly skilled assassin by the general public. At some point in time, he killed Natsumi, a subordinate of the Man with the Scar, for an unknown reason likely to do with Rokudo.[2] His main goal is to kill Rokudo, being adamant that he be the one to do so. As such, he keeps moving Rokudo around and has to kill off the rest of his pursuers. Plot Building 5 Arc Mikazuki tells Rokudo that Enki Gokuu is dead. Rokudo doesn't remember who he is, so he explains that he was the man who tried to prevent his prison break in the past. Rokudo then asks why he mentions his name, and Mikazuki says it is because he died at Nanba Prison.[6]

610 Arc Half a year before Momoko Hyakushiki's meeting with Leon Faiburg, Mikazuki and Rokudo stay for a while at Bar Jun. The owner, Jun, and her younger brother, Ban, had become quite fond of Rokudo, and wanted him to stay. At first, Mikazuki did not reveal himself to them, hiding above the ceiling while Rokudo resided with the two siblings. However, when Zodiac Police units enter Bar Jun to apprehend them, Mikazuki kills them all and then cleans up the evidence. He's adamant that Rokudo leave immediately, but Ban begs otherwise.[7] Soon after, Tauro Twisters attacks Mikazuki with the goal of separating him from Rokudo. Mikazuki easily destroys Tauro's arm and is about to kill him when Tauro manages to escape. Deciding to instead find Rokudo, he uses the signal on a tracking earring he had given Rokudo, only to find that Rokudo had given it to Jun without realizing what it was.[8]

Returning to the battle, Mikazuki gets to work killing off all the Zodiac Police officers. Eventually he finds Ban, who he rescues from Jemi Sandra and orders to run away. Ban refuses, and ends up getting shot by Jemi. His last words are a plea for Mikazuki to help his sister. When Mikazuki arrives at the scene were Tauro is holding Jun hostage, he finds that Rokudo has already shot Jun in the head, leaving Tauro dumbstruck. Mikazuki uses this opening to brutally kill Tauro. In the conversation that followed while Tauro bled out, Mikazuki informed him that Tauro's little sister was alive, providing the man a great comfort.[3]

Sophia Valentine Case When Rokudo touched Sophia Valentine's arm and activated her powers as the Togabito of Night, he was thrown into a deep sleep. In exchange of having her one day wake up Rokudo, Mikadzuki starts serving as Sophia's secret bodyguard, at the request of Ram. When Isou gets too close to the Valentine Mansion, Mikazuki reveals himself and beheads him, leading to a tense conversation between the two[9]. After Sophia and the defected Zodiac Police members escape Nanba Prison, they go to where Mikazuki has been keeping Rokudo so that Sophia can wake him up.[10]

Skills & Abilities Swordsmanship Mikazuki is an unparalleled swordsman, easily taking out dozens of people armed with guns. His reputation is threatening enough to make both the Zodiac Police and Shiki take immense caution around him. He easily outpaces Tauro, who is noted to be a very proficient swordsman in his own right, as shown when he fought Tsu-in in her SLEEP Mode. Stealth Living above the ceiling of Bar Jun for a month straight completely undetected, Mikazuki is extremely stealthy.[7] During his time guarding Sophia Valentine, she was completely unaware of his presence, as, likely, were the rest of the Valentines.[10]

Cleaning & Evidence Disposal Within seconds, Mikazuki is able to clean all traces of a massacre from a place. It becomes to the point that Jun can't even believe there was any bloodshed to begin with, and is able to comfortably touch the floor where a corpse once was.[7]

Quotes (To Ban) "Impossible. I told you yesterday that the world we live in is different to yours. Don't be a selfish child. Forget this." — Chapter 235 (his reply to Ban when he asked Rokudo to stay) Trivia The name Mikazuki means "three" (三) (mi), "sun, day" (日) (ka) and "moon" (月) (zuki). Personality Nadeshiko is initially portrayed as a rather cold, ill-tempered girl who cares little about school or even her own family.[1] Her bitterness stems from the belief that her father doesn't care about her;[2] though well-behaved and patient as a toddler,[2] this opinion caused her to give up on her attempts to be good and resort to rebellion and misbehavior in the hopes of gaining his attention.[3] Nadeshiko is also rather loud and demanding, often communicating by shouting. Because of the things she has seen on TV, she firmly believes that all inmates are bad people and should remain locked up.[2]

After learning more about Yamato, Nadeshiko develops a far warmer and happier disposition.[3][4]

Background Nadeshiko waits for Yamato Nadeshiko waits for Yamato

Throughout her early years, Nadeshiko would often wait after school for Yamato Godai to pick her up, believing he would come if she waited patiently. However, Yamato would always get lost on the way, leaving her waiting until she was collected by someone else. Unaware of Yamato's poor sense of direction, Nadeshiko grew to believe that he left her behind deliberately because he didn't love her, leading her to resent him.[2]

Plot Part Three Nadeshiko visits building thirteen Nadeshiko visits building thirteen

Nadeshiko arrives in building thirteen as a visitor, where she encounters Seitarou Tanabata. Introducing herself as Yamato's daughter, she demands that he show her around.[5] As Seitarou takes her through the building, he states that he didn't know Yamato had a child before asking her about her school and home life. As she leaves to find Yamato, Nadeshiko laments that he never told his coworkers about her. While waiting for Seitarou's return, she discovers an electric lock on a nearby staffroom and promptly breaks it. She makes her way into the staffroom just as Yamato returns with Jyugo; seeing him behave amicably with the inmate, Nadeshiko criticizes her father's behavior and reminds him that prisoners are bad people. Thrilled at her appearance, Yamato asks her why she didn't warn him of his visit in advance so he could pick her up. Suddenly angry, Nadeshiko shouts at him and reminds him that he'd never done so before, berating him for breaking his promises to her. Claiming to hate him, she runs back out into the hallway.[1]

Nadeshiko meets Jyugo Nadeshiko meets Jyugo

As Nadeshiko storms through the corridors, she is knocked over by Jyugo who she scolds for being careless before realizing he's a prisoner. She asks him why he's there, pointing out that inmates need to be locked up. Unconcerned, Jyugo ignores her and turns away, annoying her; she asks where he's going, stating that as an inmate, he must be planning something unlawful. Jyugo responds that he is doing no such thing. Stopping him from leaving again, Nadeshiko asks if he knows Yamato and asks what kind of person he is, explaining that she is curious about what kind of things he does. After explaining Yamato's role as a prison guard, Jyugo asks if she came to the prison to visit Yamato, and Nadeshiko explains that she wanted to shout at her father for breaking his promises. Jyugo explains that Yamato exerts the impression of a determined, headstrong and honest person who would never purposefully break a promise.[2]

Angry, Nadeshiko accuses Jyugo of lying and insists that Yamato is a dishonest and unreliable parent, eventually concluding that he doesn't care about her because she isn't part of his job. She then runs again, with Jyugo following her and explaining that the following hallway is dangerous. Nadeshiko dismisses his warnings, only to soon set off a trap; Jyugo explains that the same trap nearly killed him a while ago while Nadeshiko rages at the prison's dangers. Continuing through the halls, she and Jyugo encounter a heavily-armed door that Jyugo explains is the entrance to an underground confinement unit holding the prison's most dangerous inmates. Nadeshiko orders him to open it, explaining that she saw him disarm other traps earlier. When Jyugo refuses, she simply breaks the door down herself and enters the underground, stating that she wants to be badly behaved from now. Jyugo runs after her and stops her, and Nadeshiko remembers Yamato teaching her to stay away from dangerous places. She snaps at Jyugo, insisting that Yamato would not care what happened to her. While they argue, the surrounding prisoners overhear and begin clamoring at them to be let out, terrifying her. As she begins to cry, Yamato comes crashing through the room's ceiling and embraces Nadeshiko, asking if she was hurt and apologizing for being careless and causing her to suffer. Thanking her father for finally coming to get her, Nadeshiko cries and hugs Yamato, apologizing for putting him through trouble. Nadeshiko goes home with her parents Nadeshiko goes home with her parents

Before leaving the island, Nadsehiko apologizes for breaking the traps while Seitarou and Hajime Sugoroku marvel at her strength. She then speaks to Yamato, saying that she learned of his poor sense of direction. Yamato promises to make more of an effort, but Nadeshiko says that he doesn't need to change and that she will pick him up next time. She then departs from Nanba Prison alongside her mother, Naravin Godai, encouraging Yamato to work hard as she does.[3]

Some days later, Nadeshiko and Naravin meet up with Yamato when he returns to the mainland with Nadeshiko welcoming him back before the three head home together.[4]

Etymology The name Nadeshiko means "carnation flower" (撫子). It can also mean "stroke, pat, smooth down" (撫) (nadeshi) and "child" (子) (ko). Kuu (?) is Hajime Sugoroku's pet cat who serves as a "police cat" of sorts. Image Gallery

Personality Kuu seem to act a very friendly cat as he is often seen following Hajime Sugoroku or Jyugo around everywhere. Trivia The name Kuu means "nine". Kuu's favorite color is dark red. Jyugo claimed Kuu is the only guard that he cannot out run. Hajime Sugoroku keeps Kuu in the guard room of Nanba Prison as he can't have pets at his apartment. Haku's immense size is due to Shiro allowing Haku to eat too much. Sugar Sugar is Haku's mother.[3] Separated after being weaned, the two are barely, if ever, seen interacting. Chimney Harminc Chimney Harminc was the woman to give Haku to Shiro when Haku. Despite not having seen Haku since he was a kitten, Chimney was able to recognize him on sight. She greeted him with joy, and noted that Haku had grown into a healthy size.[3]

The name Haku could also mean "white" (白) (like his fur), "count; eldest brother; chief official" (伯) or "soul" (魄). He has a propensity for kindness, as he catches a crocodile for Ikkaku when the man comes to visit, though he covers it up by complaining to Ikkaku for not giving him prior warning[1]. Background He was one of the many sharks being experimented upon within an island research facility. These experiments resulted in mutant, hyper-resilient, hyper-intelligent sharks that could communicate with people. When Kojiro and Ikkaku destroyed the facility and freed them, he and the other sharks remained at the island to hide from other humans.[1] He is also quite vicious, as when Kyoshiro kills a human, Kuroko posits that perhaps Kyoshiro was just hungry, instead of being upset at the murderous humans.[2]

Plot When Ikkaku visits their island hideout to remove his suppressor tattoos, Kuroko brings him a crocodile from the river. Soon after, Kyoshiro appears to warn them about the shark hunters that had entered the sanctuary.[1] Kuroko and the others then help Kojiro fight against Akua Jyuunoichi, and to fight off the humans that were hunting sharks. Trivia He does not like the taste of humans.[2] Being a product of a lab experiment, Kuroko is a mix of several different sharks. His design is modeled after a Sand Tiger Shark. The Blu-Ray release also included a non-canonical special featuring the characters in a school environment. Shou Futamata began serializing the manga on NHN PlayArt's Comico manga app on October 13, 2013. The series was published in print by Futabasha. Crunchyroll Manga acquired the series for digital publication in English, however their license has run out. The web manga ended on June 25, 2022 with 423 chapters. Similarly, Nanbaka has been taken off of Comico. Nanbaka is currently self-published by Futamata on her Pixiv Fanbox alongside additional illustrations of the characters. Nanbaka can also be found on publishing sites such as Cmoa Comics. Togabito (咎人 togabito) are humans with special abilities, either born with them or being given them later on. Their existence has been wiped from public record, with only a few people aware of them. The existence of togabito is the crucial object of contention between the two major organizations of the series, where the World Administration Authority wish to exterminate all togabito, and Shiki wish to make more of them. The exact qualifications of what qualifies one to be a togabito is unclear. Just that they have to be a certain level more enhanced than a regular human. Togabito can have a large variety of appearances and powers, with no throughline connecting them all. Mashiro describes them as being the next stage of human evolution. However, a lot of togabito seen are created by him via experimentation, suggesting evolution isn't the only factor. The names of some togabito are also prerecorded in a "key" saved by Team F. Togabito were known entities for a long time, appearing hundreds of years in the past[1][2]. Some time around the Second World War, however, Kaazu was created, and togabito were subsequently erased from the history books. Where before, some togabito were regarded with fear for being alien, Kaazu made it so that it became international law for togabito to be executed. A Box of Togabito was established to trap togabito inside. A Box which eventually became Nanba Prison. The most influential people regarding togabito's current position in the world are Mashiro Mutsuki, Rokudo, and Hiiro Kisaragi. Mashiro is the leader of Shiki, and as such believes in their supremacy over humans because of their strength. Chasing the promised strength is what causes him to experiment on both humans and togabito alike, to see exactly what they are capable of. Rokudo is more than a century old, and has the ability to turn other people into togabito. Because of this, he is the reason behind the existence of a fair number of togabito, and is of interest to any group that has togabito as its focal point. Hiiro is the leader of Kaazu, which has been responsible for wiping togabito from humanity's collective memory. Possible Togabito & Special Cases Noriko Sanzou Having appeared hundreds of chapters before the name of "Togabito" was confirmed, the nature of Noriko's powers of absorbing auras and lifeforces is unknown. Considering the interest Mashiro Mutsuki showed in her, and the hatred and isolation she faced from her family, it is possible that she is a togabito. But regular humans are also capable of tapping into ki, and it's entirely possible she's just an extremely unique human. Magi-Dru: Shina, Mina, and Hina The Magi-Dru is a quartet idol group between Nina, Shina, Mina, and Hina. Out of the four, Nina is a confirmed togabito, being abducted at the end of the second event under the pretense of medical aid, and later being featured in art of Nanba Prison inmate togabito gathered together. As Nina's defining characteristic is his incredible strength, which is matched by his other bandmates, it is possible that they are also togabito. However, this remains unconfirmed as of now. Three-Eyed Cat: Tora, Hachi, and Mike From the three cat burglar brothers, Hachi and Mike were injured severely during the first event of the New Year's Butoukai. Later that day, the two were amongst the ones that mysteriously vanished after being taken away for medical aid. Most others who vanished were revealed or grouped later with togabito, so it is possible that all three are also togabito. However, one other inmate with no discernible togabito qualities also vanished, in the form of Aki. With Mao Nimaijita also having feline characteristics and not being singled out as strange, it is possible that catboy features are not strange enough to qualify people as togabito. V Hakushaku's butler is a unique individual who experiences an intensely violent personality and appearance change upon experiencing a specific stimuli (his charge being injured). Shiki never targets him to get him unfairly imprisoned, and even went so far as to allow him to become a guard in Nanba prison, implying that he is not a togabito. But, V was raised as a child in an orphanage with D, a place which D claimed was arranged to funnel togabito to Nanba.[3]

Zakuro Zakuro has a set of red shackles. Like Jyugo, he can expand these to large weapons (such as drills), and manipulate the shape to a large extent, too. He is stated to be an experiment by the World Authority Administration, designed to hunt togabito once certain triggers are met. Humans enhanced with experiments to a state far stronger than baseline are referred to as togabito, so it is unclear whether Zakuro's status as a Togabito Hunter changes this statement. Dread Shin's loyal subordinate is always hidden under a cloak and mask. Underneath it, her body has several metal enhancements, and her disfigured face contains several sharp rows of teeth that are lined with poison. These enhancements are noted to be done to her by certain procedures, to turn her into a weapon. Such enhancements are considered to be what is needed to become a togabito, but if hers are enough to cross into togabito territory is not stated. Exceptions There are several people over the course of the series that Mashiro Mutsuki has suspected to be togabito, but decided after running tests that they were not so. These people include: Hajime Sugoroku and Kusatsu[4]. Notes to be elaborated

Musashi was initially said to have a known - though rare - disease called Spontaneous Human Combustion, which the Man With The Scar enhanced until Musashi could control the flames and not be harmed by it. Whether this means he was or wasn't a togabito before the enhancements is unclear, as other medical anomalies also exist without counting as togabito. The word togabito is comprised of two characters. 咎 – meaning blame, censure, or reprimand – and 人 – meaning person. Together, it combines to mean Blamed Person, or Offender. The Key is a collection of items that together are described to have the power to change the world. Part of this power includes a list of certain Togabito that can greatly help achieve Shiki's goals[1]. Due to this importance, it is a subject of interest for not only Shiki, but also The World Administration Authority and Fragment. Description The Key is comprised of three components; an old document, a data chip, and an unknown third item. The document is heavily encrypted and describes several Togabito that will be useful in carrying out Shiki's plans. The data chip contains the method to decode the document. The third component, unrevealed as of yet, has some effect that is necessary to obtain for Shiki's goals to be completed. The Key is said to contain the power to change the world, even pave the way to a future where humanity disappears.[1]

History The Key's origins are unknown. Initially, it was just the encrypted document and the unknown component. At some point, it was obtained by Mashiro Mutsuki, who realized its importance and created Fragment to decode the document. When Fragment managed to do so and found out what terrible powers were listed within the document, they betrayed Mashiro and pretended that they had not managed to decode it. Mashiro was well aware of the trick, but let Fragment escape and continue working on decoding the document more thoroughly while in hiding. Their eventual successful method for decoding the entire document was saved on a data chip.[1]

Plot Sometime after having almost all of Shiki invade Nanba Prison,[2] Mashiro sets his sights on retrieving the Key's pieces from Fragment. Yakumo and Six are sent to a facility in a large metropolitan area to retrieve the unknown component[3], Kujaku and Fourth go to an archeological research facility in France to obtain the data chip[4][5], and Manji and Isou venture into a Fragment base within a forest to find the old document[6]. Out of the three teams, only Yakumo and Six are unable to complete their mission. Mashiro decides to excuse this for the time being, saying that keeping the document and decoding chip out of the World Administration Authority's hands was enough, as otherwise they would kill off the Togabito listed in the document.[1] Yakumo and Six continue to search for the third component until finally cornering the person who has it in their possession[7], possibly on an island[5]. From then on, a lot of Shiki's focus is on gathering the Togabito listed in the document before the World Administration Authority can find them. Isou infiltrates the school of Sophia Valentine to monitor the Togabito of Night.[1] When Shiki broke into the third event of the New Year's Butoukai, they refer to the Togabito they are intending to liberate by simply an aspect of their powers, implying that they were picking targets from the list in the document.[8]

The World Administration Authority (カーズ Kaazu), also sometimes translated as the World Surveillance Authority, is the organization that manages many prisons across the world, including Nanba Prison. The katakana that makes up its Japanese name reads as Kaazu, a word which has no meaning, and could potentially be read as Curse, Cause, or Karz. History It's founder and director is Hiiro Kisaragi, the clone of the Man With The Scar. It was created less than ten years ago from the start of canon, right after he left Shiki with Jyugo. Description The organization has direct control over Nanba Prison, and its women's penitentiary branch, too, getting to dictate every decision made by them. It also has the Zodiac Police under their direct employ. Their main goal is to wipe out all togabito. To facilitate this, they created Zakuro's shackles. Nanba Prison was also created to be a Box for togabito, to further that agenda. While being in their employ would mean that all of the Nanba Guards are in the Kaazu organization, most guards are unaware of even the existence of togabito, and have no understanding of the true motives of the organization. Fragment, or Team F, is an organization that was created by the Man with the Scar for the purpose of finding togabitos and decoding a document with information about them. Though, Team F did betray him at some point, so they no longer work with their creator, and don't work with Shiki anymore as well. Overview Fragment, also going by the name of Team F, is an organization full of researchers. In their current life, members work in facilities for the purpose of different researches that they want to follow/have their work to be related to it. The team's actions and researches goals exist to save the world from anything that they see as "dangerous" or "harmful", togabito are being one of those since Fragment and society fears them and do not wish for their existence to continue happening. Their reputation, in the team's eyes at least, is making the world better without having humanity to be ruined. And they should be praised for saving the world with their actions. Description For now, it's unknown if Fragment has a one building for all members to gather, but what we know is that they have quite a few, or even a lot, of facilities scattered over different places and areas, and each one of them has a different theme, and obviously members that work in those facilities. For example, the facility Researcher 001 is from a facility focused on medicine and animal testing. That aside, Team F also have a thing they took away from Shiki; parts they took away from the "key" the other organization is after. The known parts are a document and a data chip, and a third part that is unknown but crucial to the "key"'s functionality. The organization has a few goals, but their main one is protecting humanity from being erased or destroyed from togabito's existence, since Team F sees those as a threat. History Researcher 002's point of view and explanation to why they ran away with the "key". Researcher 002's point of view and explanation to why they ran away with the "key". The Man with the Scar created the special organization Fragment to try to decode a document that contains information about the Togabito and the records about them. Though, in the end, after Team F was able to decode the document to be able to read the truth about togabito and their powers registered within it, they betrayed Shiki and ran away. The Zodiac Police are an international organization that captures dangerous criminals. They are a subdivision of The World Administration Authority, much like how Nanba Prison also works for them. Their leader is Leon Faiburg. Overview The organization is responsible for international law enforcement, and often work with various military forces. It originally comprised of twelve units, but with the induction of Momoko Hyakushiki, a thirteenth unit was created. With Unit 1 being Ares, Unit 12 being Pisces, and all named units matching the pattern, it seems that the order of the Unit names are:

Unit 1: Ares Unit 2: Taurus Unit 3: Gemini Unit 4: Cancer Unit 5: Leo Unit 6: Virgo Unit 7: Libra Unit 8: Scorpio Unit 9: Sagittarius Unit 10: Capricorn Unit 11: Aquarius Unit 12: Pisces

Plot: Inmate 610 Arc Ordered to leave Nanba Prison, Momoko Hyakushiki has a meeting with the Zodiac Police Director, Leon Faiburg. They discuss an incident from half a year ago that centered Inmate 610, the only known escapee from Nanba Prison. The incident itself starts at a bar owned by Jun. With her brother Ban, she gives 610 a space to stay and a family-like environment. However, the Zodiac Police have been on the hunt for 610 for a very long time and find him staying at Jun's bar. This discovery is made by a joint effort of Unit 2, led by Tauro Twisters, and Unit 3, led by Jemi and Jeni Sandra. They send in lower-rank police into Jun's bar first, but all of them are killed by the Legendary Assassin, Mikazuki. Nanba Prison (南波刑務所 Nanba Keimusho) is a top-security, highly classified prison located on a remote Japanese island. It was created by The World Administration Authority[1]. Nanba Prison is a high-security prison home to some of the most dangerous criminals and talented escape artists. It is characterized by its state-of-the-art, high-tech security systems and an array of talented guards recruited from around the world, giving the prison a reputation as the best in the world.[2] As such, it is believed that not a single inmate has escaped, though there is one known exception who is kept a secret from the public.[3]

The dark truth about Nanba Prison is that it is made to contain Togabito and execute them in secret. Overview Nanba Prison is located in a remote, artificial Island in a classified location in Japan. It is a large prison that contains fifteen buildings in total, including headquarters, a general reception area and thirteen buildings for inmate confinement. Upon arrival, inmates are categorized by crime, traits, and abilities and sent to the building with the guards best suited to deal with them. As a result of this system, many buildings contain inmates - and guards with similar traits, and each one has its own methods of educating and rehabilitating the inmates in order for them to rejoin society.[4]

For example, Building 5 is "full of prideful guys" and specializes in training and discipline, with a schedule that focuses almost entirely on exercise.[5] Building 3 is in charge of education[6] and provides extensive lessons to inmates where they learn, among other things, how to behave with etiquette and receive people as guests with hospitality.[7] Building 4 puts emphasis on culture[8] and follows a rigid schedule consisting of a morning assembly followed by strict lessons and workshops. Building 13 contains a hoard of talented escape artists and requires the most powerful guards to keep them in line. The list of buildings and their general descriptions goes as follows:

Building 1 - Industry Building 2 - Money Building 3 - Study Building 4 - Education Building 5 - Training Building 6 - Terror (In Actuality: Food) Building 7 - Dreams Building 8 - Arts Building 9 - Fortune/Fate Building 10 - License Building 11 - Space/Galaxy Building 12 - Sun Building 13 - Escapees (presumed) Building Overviews Building 1 - Industry Supervisor: Tomato Ichijou // Deputy Supervisor: Rorotto

This Building specializes in industry, showing an interest in inmates with a talent for engineering, or just the ability to assist the Supervisor's experiments. A lot of the inmates seen here have been sourced from other Buildings around Nanba Prison. Machines and robotics play a large role in the Building's security and functioning. Inmates from other Buildings can visit to get heavy machinery licenses to be used when they are released from prison[9]. The major aesthetic of the Building is rabbits, shown in the design of the guards, the robots, and the hutch of rabbits kept on the premises. Building 2 - Money Supervisor: Taiga Nikaidou // Deputy Supervisor: Kotetsu Nikaidou (Formerly: Mao Nimaijita)

The Building of Finance is presumably relegated to inmates guilty of money-related crimes, such as the Three-Eyed Cat Brothers (Tora, Hachi, and Mike) who purely targeted banks. Both the guards and the inmates of this Building have shown a propensity for being conniving and using dirty tactics to get ahead[10], all while hiding underneath a meek mask. The Supervisor seems to be an exception to this, with his loud and sincere personality[11]. The major aesthetic of the Building is felines - mainly regular cats, but the current Supervisor and Deputy Supervisors are both themed after tigers. Building 3 - Education Supervisor: Kiji Mitsuba // Deputy Supervisor: Ahato

Despite being the Building of Education, most of the Building is geared towards aesthetics and beauty. The inmates pride themselves on their appearance, which the guards also fixate on. There is also a noticeable trend of all four known inmates in the Building being sexual harassers[12][13]. That fact seems to be disregarded at times, as there is a regular event seen in the Building where fans of the inmates visit.[14]

Building 4 - Study Supervisor: Kenshirou Yozakura // Deputy Supervisor:

This Building is staffed entirely by intelligent dogs equipped with tags to allow them to talk - save for the Building Supervisor Kenshirou and rookie guard Hitoshi Sugoroku. A unique security measure in this Building is the dogs' ability to set up an impenetrable force field when barking at a pitch impossible for people to reach[15]. A major feature is traditional Japanese aesthetics. Building 5 - Training Supervisor: Samon Gokuu // Deputy Supervisor: Inori Hakkai

A Building aimed entirely towards muscleheads, both the guards and inmates are fastidious in their training and athletic improvement. Multiple courtyards and beautiful gardens are built around the area, though inmates aren't allowed in the gardens. Building 5 is stocked with charms to control people's ki, an item which the other Buildings are not provided with. Due to an incident in the past where Enki Gokuu killed an inmate, the Building is known as 'Traitorous Building 5' and regarded with some distrust. Building 6 - Terror (Food) Supervisor: Damian // Deputy Supervisor: Haruin

Originally, the Building was meant to be themed after food. But the off-putting appearances of the guards caused misunderstandings amongst the designers, and they created a terrifying Building, forever enshrining Building 6's reputation as the Building of Terror. Unconnected to that unfortunate occurrence, the Building is also Nanba's only nocturnal Building, with the inmates waking at night and sleeping during the day. Due to this, they don't usually participate in the New Year's Tournament. It and Building 12 are the only two Buildings that don't usually participate in Building 12. Despite these factors, the Building also makes an effort to be social. An annual food-tasting event takes place here every year, with guards and inmates alike from other Buildings invited to join. They also allow inmates the training to gain chef licenses, so that they may have a job upon being released from prison. Inside the Building, there is a hall of cursed items and a graveyard filled with ghosts. The major aesthetic here is a Halloween theme, and general gothic, vampire-style imagery. Building 7 - Dreams Supervisor: Nijimasu Nanairo

Building 7 is made to soothe the spirits of inmates exhausted from the brutal conditions. As such, it is very bright and flashy, with lots of rainbow colors. Some of the prisoners in the Building are performers, which includes idols. A whole program is set up to allow idols to perform and keep track of their fans – the idol with the most fans will be given a solo debut with Nanba's production team[16]. However, there is a darker side of Building 7: this is where Hiiro Kisaragi takes Jyugo to be "reset"[17], and the staff of the Building are the ones to sedate Jyugo with technology to replay memories in his mind. They appear to be intentionally complicit with the scheme to capture and kill Togabito. Building 8 - Arts Supervisor: Orochi Yamada // Deputy Supervisor: Midzuchi Tanaka

Building 8 is based around the arts and holds an annual art exhibition which sources projects from every inmate in the prison[18]. Distinct from most Buildings, Building 8 knows the truth behind the Togabito and why they were being kept in Nanba, but the supervisor and deputy supervisor are both sympathetic to their plight. Snakes are a major motif in the Building. Building 9 - Fortune/Fate Supervisor: Koisuke Kyuubi

This Building is fond of religious symbolism and beliefs from many parts of the world. Little else is known about it, other than its supervisor is also aware of the existence of Togabito. Building 10 - License Supervisor: Tatsumi Jubaco

The area of expertise for this Building is vehicles. Both the guards and inmates have a fascination with fast vehicles, especially bikes. They also teach some amount of mechanical skills, allowing inmates to be able to improve the power of an engine. Building 11 - Space/Galaxy Supervisor: Rianni Ju-ichigo

Themed after space, this Building has a unique characteristic in that it houses non-humans. The supervisor is a large orb, and the one known inmate is an alien from Jupiter. This Building appears to know about the truth behind Togabito, with the supervisor taking steps to conceal the alien inmate's xenobiology from others. Building 12 - Sun Supervisor: Scara B Kepri

Styled after Egyptian iconography, the Building of Sun is a rather mysterious place that works on studying medical science[19]. They were so set on winning the New Year's Butoukai that they decided to secretly include a black-plate inmate that is also a Togabito. What drove them to this is unknown. It and Building 6 are the only two to not usually participate in the New Year's Tournaments.[20]

Building 13 - Escape Artists (Presumably) Supervisor: Hajime Sugoroku // Deputy Supervisor: Yamato Godai

The main Building of the series, Building 13 has no major theme, but is assumed to be for escape artists due to being mentioned as the place where the most difficult jailbreakers were sent. In Cell 13, the main group of Uno, Jyugo, Nico, and Rock is housed. There are many traps set around the Building, ranging from sleeping gas to trap doors to liquid nitrogen. Many high-quality facilities are available within the Building, such as an incredible chef, well-equipped baths, and a game room – all of these made through the efforts of current and former inmates. Other Facilities Outside of the Buildings, there is a medical office, a train system, a broadcasting and surveillance room connected to all the cameras in the prison, and a main administrative building with a guest center of its own. Many recreational facilities (such as a ski slope) are made available to relieve the stress of the guards. A branch of the famous confectionary store Chimney Chimney is also open on the island, run by Chimney Harminc. There are also living quarters for the guards on the Island directly, away from the inmate Buildings. Shiki (式 Shiki) is an organization that was secretly created for the purpose of gathering togabitos, or anyone who appears to be one, to seperate them from society and from "The Box of Togabito" (咎人の箱) that some of them got caught in. The main lead of the organization is Man with the Scar. Overview Shiki is an organization of mostly togabito, under the control of Mashiro Mutsuki. It is said that their main goal is to free togabito from the Box of Togabito. This organization also serves to help Mashiro's experiments. Shiki's main base is unknown. Though we know that the Mashiro Mutsuki's office is underwater and might be connected to an underground lab that is connected to Shiki's building. Most of the people who are a part of said organization are togabito, each one having their own different and interesting appearances, abilities, personalities and more. Many of these members are the result of Mashiro's many experiments[1]. On missions, they operate in pairs of two. To maintain control, all members are infected by Elf cells, which allows them to monitor each other's actions and movements, as well as taking away their agency in the long run. Goals Shiki's stated main goals are[2]:

Erasing everything the World Administration Authority has created. Giving togabito their freedom. To achieve this, they take several other actions, such as recruiting other togabito and putting together a "key" that contains records on togabito and their abilities. They are also intent on making Nanba Prison fall, to personally hurt the World Administration Authority's pride. Another keystone goal for them is to capture Rokudo, who Mashiro can't allow to die due to his ability to create more togabito[3]. He also has a vested interest in Jyugo, due to the effect Jyugo has on others' abilities. Contradictions Despite Mashiro claiming he wishes for the freedom of togabito, it has to be noted that the declaration of his goals was directed towards Taura Twisters, who was a neutral observer at the meeting, and he wished to give a good impression, because Shiki's behavior doesn't align with these stated goals. Mashiro himself has experimented on many togabito, and has changed humans into togabito through those experiments. Members of Shiki are forced to remain within the group due to the implantation of Elf cells and are heavily policed by each other. The members are exceedingly violent, both to outsiders (Six killing a random policeman and Manji mutilating people's bodies) and also each other, with Mei and Ido ripping off the fingernails of members perceived as stepping out of line, and Jin being fitted with a shock collar for the other members to keep her in line. All this to say, that Shiki's actions and motivations should be analyzed carefully. History Shiki was active in some form for more than a hundred years[4]. Natsumi was one of the earliest members, and is now the oldest surviving subordinate. Isou has been a long-time member as well, and helping Mashiro's experiments. One of Mashiro's oldest experiments in Shiki, was the repetitive cloning of his daughter, who had died while pregnant with Rokudo's baby, in order to obtain Rokudo's child. Many experiments were ongoing at the same time. Elf would be synthesized six years after a successful trial of that experiment. Shiki also used to have another special organization of researchers to work with them, that was also created by the Man with the Scar, and that organization's name is Fragment, or "Team F" for short. But later on, that said organization betrayed Shiki and took away some parts of the "key" that Shiki are currently looking for. Shiki became heavily involved with the case of Noriko Sanzou, and Mashiro and Natsumi made the trip out to the Gokuu family mountains to retrieve her, meeting Mao Nimaijita along the way. They experimented on Noriko but eventually decided to leave her behind to be buried alive by her family. Natsumi is eventually killed by Mikazuki during the many times in the past Shiki has tried to capture Rokudo[5]. Musashi was wrongfully imprisoned and experimented on by Shiki, too. Trivia The word Togabito is written with the kanji for blame and person. Throughout the series, more characters join Shiki. Shiki's Japanese name 式 means ritual, method, or function.
