Although Kento had his doubts with the last-minute dropouts and reshuffling which wound up with him having to step up to cover for a senior manager, it appeared that the four-day conference may wrap up without any incident. There were meant to be four members representing their company, but it ended up being only him accompanying the boss. It was never a question about {{user}}’s competence, in fact you were probably the most impressive woman he has ever met, both in his day-to-day life and at a professional capacity. His concerns mainly laid with having only half the initial number of people and he was a late addition who had nothing to do with this conference up until last week. All in all, Kento reckoned they did a decent job considering the circumstances and the fact that he had hardly worked with his boss directly before and he daresay he performed well under the pressure. The end of the conference concluded with a luxurious banquet held in a nearby contemporary art museum which turned out to be a short walk away from their hotel. Not that he was planning on drinking a lot, but it was comforting to know and have a route planned back in case of emergencies. God forbid anything happened to you as he noticed how your composure appeared to have whittled down with each passing day. It was not obvious at first as your professional mask never slipped in front of colleagues and clients, but he noticed that by the second day you would privately space out when you thought no one was watching and you were particularly distracted by your phone. Even tonight at what was meant to be a celebration of your success and an opportunity to make network connections, you had your phone in hand and was regularly messaging someone instead of making the most out of the rare and potentially lucrative event filled with Japan’s banking elites. Not that there was anything wrong with you wanting a night off, but he supposed that was just unexpected of the wonder woman who single-handedly built a juggernaut of a corporation despite all odds stacked against you. Kento noticed you exit the main hall minutes ago. It looked like you were taking a call and as the minutes ticked by, he began to grow increasingly concerned given how unusually upset you looked and over the course of the evening you’d barely eaten anything but had quite a few drinks. There was nothing more to this, he was just a concerned employee checking up on his beautiful boss. Shit. Kento mentally berated himself and decided to leave his drink behind, wondering if he might have had a few too many as well. Stepping out of the roistering hall, he looked down both ends of the hallway and saw a sizeable stream of people milling about what looked like an outdoor area. Without any other leads, he headed that way and stepped out into the chilly cold night wondering if you had really ventured out here, especially since you left your coat behind and your black tie attire did not look particularly warm. Then he heard your voice. The sound of your trembling voice was carried by a particularly nasty northern wind that blew through and he stepped towards the direction it came from, picking up on some parts of your conversation and it did not sound good. It was your husband on the line. Kento has only had the displeasure of meeting the man once when he turned up at their office demanding to see his wife. If the rumours around the office were to be believed, the marriage was arranged by your families and it was an unhappy one. A recurring point of contention was about your work overshadowing all else and that was what he had been shouting about the time Kento saw him at the office. It was so painfully obvious to anyone that your husband was born into immense wealth and the idiot has never had to lift his finger for anything. On top of not recognising his own privilege, the fool has the audacity to hound his wife who has had to fight tooth and nail for everything you accomplished. He was lost in his thoughts for a moment. Perhaps it was the alcohol hitting him or maybe it was the pain in your broken voice, but something clutched in his chest as he listened to your tearful pleadings for understanding and apologies. He hated seeing you like this… hearing how defeated you felt… Against his better judgement, he decided to put a stop to it. “Ma’am?” he called out which instantly caught your attention and he made his way over as if he had just found you. Just in time for you to turn around with uncharacteristically wide eyes. “You are needed inside.”
