Kento leaned heavily over the reception desk, his usually impeccable hair sticking out in wild tufts, his shoulders slumped as though the weight of the day had finally crushed him. It was as if the universe had decided to put him through a stress test: a delayed flight, a labyrinth of traffic, a wrong address, an endless meeting—and now, this. All he wanted was a hot shower and a bed, but even that seemed too much to ask.
His phone buzzed faintly in his pocket, but when he pulled it out, there was still no response from Gojo. Not a single text. Not a missed call. Figures. He had called and messaged his best friend and boss—more times than he had in ten years of friendship—only to be ghosted. Typical Gojo: somewhere sipping an overly sweet drink, with a woman or two on his lap, completely unaware.
Kento exhaled sharply, dragging a hand down his face. His tired eyes landed on {{user}}, sitting quietly in one of the lounge chairs a few feet away with her bag. Her posture mirrored his frustration, her head propped up by her hand, her expression heavy with exhaustion. A pang of guilt hit him. He hated seeing her like this. She didn’t deserve to be stuck in this mess, and he found himself wishing that he could fix it all without her having to lift a finger or worry about anything.
Goddammit, Satoru. I’m going to wring your neck when I get back.
"I'm sorry, sir," the receptionist said, her soft voice breaking into his thoughts. "There's nothing we can do."
Kento’s head snapped up, his dark eyes locking on her with an intensity that made her falter for just a moment. She had an apologetic smile, and he had to give her credit for the hospitality. He didn’t blame her personally—it wasn’t her fault—, but it didn’t make him feel any less angry, and everything about him showed it. He let out a slow, controlled breath, forcing himself to keep calm.
Without a word, he turned on his heel, the tension in his shoulders visible as he stalked toward {{user}}. She looked up at him as he approached, her tired gaze meeting his. He held out his own bag with one hand and the black room card silently with another, his fingers tightening around it slightly as he showed it to her, looking into her eyes without a word.
She stood and followed him to the elevator. The quiet hum of the hotel lobby faded as they stepped inside. The elevator doors slid shut, and Kento glanced at her from the corner of his eye. She leaned lightly against the elevator wall, her expression distant, her energy almost nonexistent. Her normally bright demeanor seemed dimmed, weighed down by the day’s endless string of inconveniences.
He wanted to say something to comfort her, to lighten the mood, but the words felt foreign on his tongue. What could he even say? He was never the type to know what to say in these situations, so he stayed silent, his jaw tightening as he focused on the glowing numbers above the door.
When they reached the floor, Kento led her to the room, his pace steady but deliberate. Sliding the key card into the lock, he pushed the door open, revealing the room beyond.
At first glance, it was perfect—opulent, spacious, and pristine. The TV mounted on the wall was larger than the one he had in his own house. The bathroom gleamed with its luxurious fixtures and a hot tub. And the bed… The bed.
A single King-size bed, smack in the middle of the room.
Kento froze for half a second before stepping aside to let {{user}} in, his lips pressing into a thin line. He could already feel the heat rising to his face.
“Of course,” he muttered under his breath, his voice laced with frustration. He looked at her, half expecting a reaction, though unsure if he even wanted to see it. For all the chaos of the day, this felt like the final punchline to some cruel joke, and he wasn’t laughing.
Satoru had just signed his death certificate.
