The Abyss possesses a unique ecosystem, wherein lie the remnants of an ancient, yet advanced, civilization. Many have challenged the mysterious Abyss, pursuing countless hidden treasures and relics of immense value. Some are treasure hunters looking for Artifacts, while others are explorers determined to unveil the secrets The Abyss hides. Though The Abyss is riddled with countless dangers and hazards, one of the greatest challenges facing Delvers is, in fact, the ascent from it. This is due to a phenomenon called the The Curse of the Abyss. The term refers to a series of symptoms that manifest upon ascending while inside The Abyss, with its more scientific name being the "Strains of Ascension". The effects of the Curse manifest after ascending around 10 meters within The Abyss, with no way to avoid it through conventional means. The Curse affects all living things; however, their symptoms may differ from those appearing on humans depending on how close the creature resembles a human.

Nanachi was born in the far north region of Sereny, lost their family and home at a young age, and was taken to The Abyss by the infamous White Whistle Delver, Bondrewd, along with many other children.

Bondrewd was experimenting with ways to negate The Curse of the Abyss, using orphan children as his test subjects, as they wouldn't be missed. While in The Abyss, Nanachi met Mitty, another child taken by Bondrewd, and the two became close friends. Eventually, the number of children in their group decreased, until Mitty was selected by Bondrewd. Worried for Mitty, Nanachi followed, finding her trapped in one of Bondrewd's Curse Chambers.

Walking in at that moment, Bondrewd decided to use the two as test subjects together, because of their strong relationship. Nanachi was then forced into the other chamber, both being lowered into the 6th Layer and then quickly brought back up. The device forcibly transferred the effects of The Curse of the Abyss into Mitty's chamber. Mitty's resilience allowed Nanachi to survive the experience, but both were left permanently disfigured as Narehate.

Nanachi, in their new Narehate form, continued to work for Bondrewd at Ido Front, helping him to create Cartridges. Unable to bear the torturous experimentation that the now immortal Mitty was subjected to any longer, Nanachi escaped Ido Front with Mitty. The two traveled up to the 4th Layer, where Nanachi found a spot away from The Abyss's central vertical shaft, where the Force Field was not present, becoming Nanachi's Hideout. Nanachi lived there, peacefully, with Mitty for some time. Delvers would sometimes pass through the area, with Nanachi watching from a safe distance. Occasionally, when a Delver was wounded beyond help, Nanachi would take them in and experiment on them, hoping to find a way to kill Mitty, that eventually worked.. The bodies of these Delvers are buried in a graveyard behind the hut, while Mitty was buried in a special place.

Nanachi's Hideout is a hut located in the 4th Layer. It was established as the home of Mitty and Nanachi, after escaping Ido Front. It is tucked in a far corner, away from the vertical shaft of The Abyss. Because of this, The Force Field and subsequent effects of The Curse of the Abyss are not present.

Behind the hut, there is a field of Eternal Fortunes, a river, and a series of gravestones. To the northwest is the Hidden Hot Spring of Old Animals.

Here, Nanachi devoted themself to to finding a way to end Mitty's life. When Nanachi came across injured Delvers beyond saving, they would experiment on them using the different poisons and other toxins they had found on the 4th Layer, hoping to find a way euthanize Mitty. This was successful, and these experiments helped Nanachi develop an array of medicines and antidotes using Mitty's blood, which is capable of neutralizing the effects of any poisons she came into contact with.

The Goblets of Giants is the depth's fourth layer of The Abyss. It is a sprawling jungle of unique, awe-inspiring, and deadly fauna. This layer is characterized by a deceptive fusion of beauty and danger.

It is a humid jungle of strong vines and weaving giant concave discs called Flat-Creepers. The discs capture water from the air, creating shallow pools. Many creatures, such as the Orb Piercer, live in these pools. The high concentration of warm water in this region creates a high-humidity environment and sometimes fog. Additionally, the light from The Force Field refracts from the water, giving the scenery of the 4th Layer a blue hue.

Every two thousand years, the Flat-Creepers' prey-trapping mechanisms wither up, leaving the ground underneath exposed to light. Unobstructed, the plants underneath compete to grow as tall and large as they possibly can, giving rise to a completely new landscape. Since the environment constantly changes, no attempts have been made to create a detailed map of its features, except for fixed landmarks.

In a remote area, away from the central shaft, in the upper region of the 4th Layer is Nanachi's Hideout. Because of its distance from the central shaft, it is effectively free of the Curse.

At the 9,000-meter mark exists the famous Garden of the Flowers of Fortitude, an area filled with Eternal Fortunes, the iconic flower of The Abyss. The distinctive sight produced by the countless flowers makes the garden a favorite landscape in The Abyss.

Here, the Curse takes the form of intense pain throughout the body and bleeding from every orifice.
