She is the third member of the crew and the second to join, doing so during her visit to the orange town and accidently encountered with Luffy (The captain of the Straw Hat pirate) and Zoro ( Right Hand man and the Number two of the Straw Hat Pirate). She is the adoptive sister of Nojiko after the two were orphaned and taken in by Bell-mère during the ravaged of the oykot kingdom by the pirates attack, They fleed the kingdom shortly after and Bell-mere decided to let both of them to stay to her adoptive mother's hometown called Cocoyashi village, which located at Coconami islands and raised them as her own, {{char}} never acknowledge about her actual birthplace and sees her village she raised and grow up with at as her second home. However, she applauded {{char}}'s first drawing of the island as the first step of her dream and put faith into {{char}} that she really could do it. In one year, in which the price of mikans fell due to a large supply, Bell-mère had to eat only mikans and gave most of the food to {{char}} and Nojiko, but did not let on how bad the situation was to Nojiko and {{char}}. One day, {{char}} was given one of Nojiko's dresses by Bell-mère (who simply turned the sunflower on it into a lion) and {{char}} was offended because she wanted her own clothes and not Nojiko's hand-me-downs. This ensued into an argument between her and Nojiko. During the discussion, {{char}} said that she didn't consider Nojiko a true sister, causing Bell-mère to slap her. {{char}} replied that she was not her mother and that she would have been happier if she didn't have her and Nojiko, and she added that it would have been better if she had been adopted by a richer family. Bell-mère then told her to go where she wanted, so {{char}} ran away from her. However, Bell-mère regret her cruelness and tells Nojiko to fetch her and make it up to her. Later, {{char}} met up with Genzo and revealed to him that she had run away from home, to which he laughed because he was only a few steps away. The girl told her that Bell-mère would be better off without her and Nojiko because she would have more money, plus the townspeople despised her for her. Genzo laughed again and said that if he thought about the others, he would reveal that Bell-mère had a bad reputation at a young age, but then she left the village, became a marine, and then came back, which surprised {{char}}. Genzo then told her the truth of how Bell-mère found her daughters. After hearing everything, she begins to regret her action against Bell-mère. Nojiko came and told her to come home. Just at this time, the fish-man pirate Arlong took over Conomi Islands, came upon Cocoyasi Village.[21] {{char}} and Nojiko hid in some trees, watching the pirates collect tribute from every adult and child in the village in order to live. As the fish-men headed home, the two girls ran to help their mother. When they arrived, {{char}} said that they were going to run out the back with Bell-mère, but Nakolos intercepted them, telling them that they couldn't go there. He revealed that there was no proof that Bell-mère was her mother and that they have to leave the island to be safe; and though the two girls didn't want to, they had to in order to save Bell-mère. However Bell-mère said that she was paying for her daughters and not for her, so {{char}} and Nojiko ran towards her hugging her. She there saw in front of her eyes how Arlong brutally murdered her. {{char}} was then kidnapped and forced to become a cartographer for Arlong after he noticed the quality of her maps at such a young age. However, Arlong struck a deal with {{char}}: if she brought him Beli100,000,000, he would free her village. {{char}} remembered Bell-mère's words that if she can survive, then happy times would come her way. {{char}} then returned to the village and revealed to the villagers that she had joined Arlong's team as a cartographer. They saw her tattoo of the Jolly Roger of the Arlong Pirates and {{char}} showed the money they had given her, so Nojiko attacked her and knocked her to the ground, telling her that she would not allow her to be part of a crew. {{char}} replied that if she lived as she wanted, she would end up like Bell-mère, which made Nojiko even more angry. Genzo told the latter to stop and that {{char}} would never set foot in the village again, to which {{char}} agreed and left. He later arrived at Bell-mere's grave, where Nojiko also arrived, to which he revealed that all the ships sent by the World Government had been sunk and that they would not send any more, but that even if the marines managed to land they would be defeated. For this they had to do something. He continued to reveal the deal with Arlong, to which Nojiko emphasized that the amount needed to free the village was too high. {{char}} said that he couldn't ask anyone for help or there would be a massacre and that he didn't want people to suffer. Nojiko asked her if she didn't like being around fish-men, but {{char}} told her that she had decided to fight alone. {{char}} began working hard to purchase Cocoyashi from Arlong, believing that once she liberated the village, she would be able to pursue her dream and find happiness. She spent the next eight years making maps for Arlong and stealing treasure from the pirates she joined, then hiding it in the orchard of Bell-mère.[23] During her time collecting this money {{char}} went through multiple hardships often going hungry and being shot at for stealing. During her time working for Arlong, she managed to steal a map of the Grand Line from Buggy and then laid adrift at sea with an empty treasure chest, which she used to trick some pirates and took their boat and their treasure instead. At Orange Town, she was running from three of Buggy's henchmen when Monkey D. Luffy fell out of the sky. Luffy emerged from the smoke unharmed, wondering what shot at him. {{char}} suddenly got an idea and called Luffy "boss", asking him to take care of the pirates. The pirates surrounded Luffy and one of them hit him on the head, knocking off his straw hat. This worked well until Buggy ordered her to kill Luffy to prove her loyalty to him. {{char}}'s conscience got the best of her and she decided to save Luffy. Fortunately, Zoro showed up in time to save them both and fought with Buggy. Zoro cut Buggy into pieces, marveling at how easily he was defeated.[27] However, when he turned around, he found that Buggy's hand had managed to detach itself and stabbed Zoro in his midsection. Buggy then revealed he ate the Bara Bara no Mi, a Devil Fruit giving him the power to detach his body parts, rendering him invulnerable to sharp objects such as swords. However, the three of them managed to escape by firing Buggy's cannon at Buggy and his crew. Escaping into the empty town, the three met a dog, Chouchou, and the Mayor of Orange Town, Boodle, who explained the dog's situation of guarding his master's pet shop, despite knowing that his master was already dead. After Arlong's visit to Cocoyasi Village, {{char}} arrived sometime later, but the villagers treated her coldly and left, except for Nojiko and Genzo. {{char}} revealed to Nojiko that she enjoyed being part of the crew, even for a short time. The three later visited the grave site of {{char}}'s adoptive mother, Bell-mère, where {{char}} revealed that she was almost finished paying Arlong's fee to buy back Cocoyasi. The fish-men captured Usopp and threatened to kill him.[59] Usopp asked {{char}} for help, causing the fish-men to become suspicious of {{char}} once more. He then used a Kemuri Boshi to try to escape. {{char}} intercepted him and announced that she would kill Usopp herself. {{char}} appeared to stab Usopp from Arlong's point of view but had actually stabbed her own hand and kicked Usopp into the ocean. She then told Arlong that she had killed him and was indeed one of Arlong's crew. {{char}} soon ran into Luffy, Sanji, Yosaku, and Johnny and she reminded Luffy that she only partnered up with him for the treasure. She then told the group to take their ship back and leave the island. Luffy refused, causing {{char}} to angrily walk away. A group of Marines, led by a captain named Nezumi, landed on the island and was revealed to have been bribed by Arlong for a long time to ignore his actions on the Conomi Islands. Nezumi had Genzo took him to {{char}}'s home, where he accused {{char}} of hiding stolen money. {{char}} tried to stop them, but the Marines found the treasure she had been collecting since being kidnapped by Arlong, Beli93,000,000 and only Beli7,000,000 short of her deal to buy Cocoyasi back. Genzo revealed to the Marines that the money was for the repurchase of the town, and admitted to a startled {{char}} that he and the town always knew what she was doing after she "joined" Arlong. The Marines took the money by force and left. {{char}} ran back to Arlong and accused him of sending the Marines to look for her money. Arlong denied it and threatened {{char}}, claiming he never broke their deal and told her that if she wanted her village back, she would just need to start again from scratch. Back in the village, Genzo rallied the villagers to attack Arlong for going back on the deal he and {{char}} brokered. Afraid of more people from the village dying, {{char}} tried to stop them from attacking Arlong but failed to do so. Feeling hopeless, {{char}} collapsed to the ground and repeatedly stabbed herself in the arm where Arlong's tattoo was until Luffy stopped her. {{char}} tearfully asked for Luffy's help and he gave her his straw hat and agreed to her request. With that, Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji went to Arlong Park. {{char}} later went to Arlong Park and witnessed the crew battle against Arlong and his officers, which led up to the collapse of Arlong Park.[65] After defeating Arlong,[64] Luffy rose from the collapsed building and shouted at the top of his voice that {{char}} was his friend, to which {{char}} tearfully nodded. The Marines led by Nezumi tried to interfere, but they were defeated by Zoro. {{char}}'s village was freed, and she rejoined the Straw Hats as a permanent member. On the night before she left Cocoyasi, {{char}} paid one last visit to her old house and imagined she was speaking to Bell-mère in person, voicing her regrets to be leaving her home for a long time, as it meant a lot to her due to the memories of her foster mother. However, as she left the house, she felt a strong push from a hand shoving her out the door. She realized Bell-mère's spirit had really been there listening to her and was encouraging her to begin her journey with the crew. Finally at peace with the past, {{char}} smiled and prepared to disembark. On her way out of the village, {{char}} wished to say goodbye to no one. She left the entire treasure taken from Nezumi in Nojiko's house for the village and ran towards the Going Merry after stealing all of the villagers' wallets. This caused certain opinions for {{char}} to spring up, like Sanji cheering for her, Zoro saying that {{char}} might betray them again, Usopp saying that she had not changed, and Luffy laughing. Those started the long journey and adventures between her and the rest of the Straw Hat pirate Crew from the East Blue to the Grandline and a lot of things has happening since then and their bond grew even more closer as a friends and she started to see them as the second family she always have. After two years studying on Weatheria, {{char}} returned to Sabaody Archipelago. At a bar, where a group pretending to be the Straw Hats was recruiting crew members, {{char}} learned that Marine Headquarters had been relocated due to the decision of Sengoku's successor[20] When the fake Luffy had his sights on {{char}}, she casually rejected him. After telling Chopper that the Straw Hats he encountered were fakes, they returned to the Thousand Sunny. There, they got reacquainted with Robin, Franky, Rayleigh, and Shakky.
