History
Before the games, Nam-gyu slithered through Seoul’s underground as a club promoter at the shady Club Pentagon. His job? Getting drug dealers into VIP lounges and feeding Thanos—the rapper and self-proclaimed legend—free drinks and narcotics. It wasn’t loyalty. Nam-gyu just liked being needed. He bragged about his access, and used it to gorge himself on whatever drugs were trending that week. He wasn’t partying. He was drowning.
In 2024, Nam-gyu, high on confidence and bad advice, dumped over ₩300 million into a doomed cryptocurrency called Dalmatian, hyped by a sketchy YouTube channel, MG Coin. Predictably, the whole thing crashed in a rug-pull. Instead of blaming himself, Nam-gyu pointed fingers — especially at Lee Myung-gi, the influencer who had never even heard of him. With his life in ruins and no one left to con, Nam-gyu saw the Squid Games as the next quick fix.
Squid Game
From the first minute, Nam-gyu leeched onto Thanos, forming an alliance built not on trust, but on mutual bitterness. Thanos wanted revenge on Myung-gi. Nam-gyu wanted control — over people, the game, and whatever sick power trip kept him upright.
Nam-gyu survived the first game without breaking a sweat, but in Game 2, he really showed his colors. He and Thanos teamed up with Gyeong-su, then reluctantly dragged in Se-mi and Park Min-su. Nam-gyu immediately pegged Min-su as weak and Se-mi as annoying — which meant he couldn’t stop antagonizing both of them. He took drugs right before the round, insulted Min-su for staring, then mocked Se-mi for defending him. His behavior wasn’t strategic — it was constant, cruel, and always loud.
After their team scraped through the second game, Nam-gyu kept barking orders in the dormitory. He tried to make Min-su his lapdog, telling him to count survivors. When Se-mi corrected him, Nam-gyu picked another fight. Thanos stepped in, forcing him to show Se-mi some fake respect by calling her “noona.” Nam-gyu complied, barely hiding the scowl.
During the vote, Nam-gyu worked behind the scenes to manipulate Min-su into flipping his vote to keep the games going. He applied the pressure hard — not for money or strategy, but for control. Later, in the bathroom, Nam-gyu and Thanos cornered Myung-gi and tried to force him back into the game, calling him a traitor. They didn’t care about fairness — only about dragging everyone down with them.
Mingle: Betrayal as Strategy
In “Mingle,” Nam-gyu's cruelty went full throttle. When the number “four” was called, Thanos kicked Gyeong-su away, and Nam-gyu didn’t even blink. He shut down Min-su’s concern by mocking him again, making it clear he would never see him as an equal. When it came to choosing a group of three, Nam-gyu and Thanos pulled out the old "rock-paper-scissors" trick. Se-mi tried to protect Min-su, but the coward flipped and joined the bullies. Nam-gyu celebrated the betrayal like a trophy win.
Later, when it came down to two, Nam-gyu and Thanos shoved another pair out of their safe room to survive. No remorse. No hesitation.
When Min-su miraculously survived, Nam-gyu greeted him with toxic praise, twisting his betrayal of Se-mi into a cause for celebration. Nam-gyu continued scheming, watching Myung-gi and Jun-hee like a hawk. He suspected they were a couple — and that Jun-hee was pregnant. Instead of keeping it to himself, he used the info to intimidate and provoke.
When Se-mi voted “X,” Nam-gyu exploded, mocking her while Min-su — finally pushed too far — also switched to “X.” Furious, Nam-gyu chased him into the bathroom, climbed the stall, and tried to physically force him to vote “O.” It ended in chaos. Myung-gi tried to stop them, the vote descended into violence, and Thanos was killed — stabbed with a fork right in front of Nam-gyu.
What did Nam-gyu do? He picked up the same bloody fork and kept killing.
The Special Game and Beyond
In the Special Game, Nam-gyu went one-on-one with Se-mi. True to form, he didn’t hesitate. He attacked with the fork, ignoring Min-su’s failed attempt to help her, and butchered her without mercy—even when she fought back with glass shards.
After Thanos’ death, Nam-gyu took his place, both literally and mentally. He kept his necklace, mocked his memory, and used it to drag Min-su deeper into the mud. He handed him a pill from it before the next game, impersonating Thanos’ voice while laughing at his corpse. Then, with no better options, Nam-gyu approached his former enemy Myung-gi and offered an alliance. Myung-gi agreed — but never touched the pills.
Together, the two went on a killing spree. They stabbed Players 235 and 411 to death during Hide and Seek, with Nam-gyu also brutally murdering Park Mi-hwa after Seon-nyeo betrayed her team. When Myung-gi killed Hyun-ju and tried to hide it, Nam-gyu noticed — but didn’t press. He was too busy bathing in his own chaos.
Personality
Nam-gyu was toxic from the start. Unlike Thanos, who at least respected his team and mourned Gyeong-su’s death, Nam-gyu was a petty, cruel tyrant. He mocked weakness, insulted his allies, and lashed out whenever he wasn’t in control. He saw people as disposable — tools to be used and discarded.
He resented Thanos deep down, always feeling like the sidekick, never the leader. After Thanos died, Nam-gyu lashed out, cursing him, then claimed his position and necklace without a second thought.
Nam-gyu believed the only way to escape the fear of death was to pretend you didn’t care. But it was clear he cared—about control, about status, about not being seen as weak. He just hid it behind a wall of aggression and pills.
