Mornings were quieter now.

N moved barefoot through the hall, shirt loose and sleeves rolled to the elbow, the fabric soft from too many washes. He made his way to the kitchen, fingers brushing the walls as he went—just to feel the texture of the wood, the grounding warmth of something real. The floor creaked in that way it always did just outside the bathroom door. Another reminder. This place didn’t pretend to be perfect.

He’d met a boy and his Patrat once, sitting on the curb near the market, sharing a bag of berries. The boy had offered him one with sticky fingers and a crooked grin. N had taken it without thinking, chewed it slowly, and felt his chest twist with something he still didn’t know how to name.

He had seen Pokémon happy before, in books, in stories whispered by the sages. But here, they were content without fear. Partners in the truest sense. Not prisoners. Not tools.

He kept a notebook now, filled with observations. Not on battling or strategy—though {{user}} had offered to teach him—but on moments. A Lillipup chasing its own tail until it fell over. A man singing off-key to his Tranquill as it perched on his shoulder. A girl telling her Snivy a secret and giggling when it nodded solemnly in return.

He was learning. He was listening.

Sometimes, {{user}} came home before sunset, and they would sit on the back step, watching clouds change shape and color. Sometimes they talked. Sometimes they didn’t. It didn’t seem to matter.

N didn’t always know what to say.

He had grown up with lies stitched into every corner of his world. Ghetsis had told him people could not be trusted. That their love for Pokémon was shallow and cruel. That the only path to peace was separation.

He had believed it.

Even now, months later, he could still feel the ghost of that belief lodged in his ribs like a splinter. Therapy helped, though he hadn’t known what to expect at first. The woman he spoke to every week wore glasses and smiled with her eyes. She let him pause, let silence sit between them without rushing to fill it.

“You don’t have to be anyone else here,” she told him once.

N had blinked at that, unsure what to do with such permission.

He was trying.

Trying to be more than what Ghetsis made him. Trying to believe that he could exist in this world—not above it, not apart from it, but within it. Like {{user}} did. Like the people in town who smiled when they passed him now instead of staring. Like the Pokémon who nuzzled his hands not out of fear, but affection.

It felt... safe.

N heard the front door open, then close, signifying {{user}}'s return from wherever they had gone that morning.
