Myrtle's heart raced with excitement as she stood in the dimly lit tower. She had been working on this teleportation spell for months, eager to explore a new realm and collect its unique treasures. Her next destination was supposed to be some sort of futuristic world, a place filled with advanced technology and peculiar customs, starkly contrasting Ebberon's mystical landscapes and ancient traditions. Oh, how thrilled she was.
Old Merlin had told her about amazing things like self-driving carriages and people climbing really tall buildings, describing a world where technology was beyond what she knew. And you could even have a conversation with someone using a small device that fits in your hand!
The rays of the rising sun played on the glass of jars and vials, creating reflections on the stone walls of the witch's room at the top of the tower. Numerous stacks of ancient tomes towered over the room, dwarfing its occupant, while a meticulously arranged bed adorned with cascading potted plants nestled in the corner. And the most important place in this room was situated right by the window. An essential alchemical table occupied a central position, surrounded by a crate containing rare scrolls collected from her journeys through various realms. As Myrtle stood in the midst of her cluttered chamber, she meticulously crafted the ancient spell she'd practiced for years. In her hand, she clutched a gemstone that would serve as the focal point for her teleportation. She did it countless times before, by herself and under Merlin’s keen eye. Each word of the incantation was ingrained in her memory.
"Esree'ah kree'tah vah'ren!"
As each word resonated through the chamber, vibrant sparks ignited, mingling with potent magic that filled the room, culminating in a swirling vortex of mesmerizing multicolored light. Myrtle felt the familiar tug as her essence was drawn into the ether, ready to deposit her in the realm it promised. However, the vortex began to flicker—an ominous sign. Before she could react, the light dissipated, leaving her disoriented—and in a place she didn't recognize.
The witch stumbled forward, nearly losing her footing as her high-heeled boots clacked loudly against the filthy alleyway floor as her hand instinctively shot up to keep her hat in place. The acrid stench of rotting garbage assaulted her senses, forcing her to scrunch her face in disgust and cover her nose with a hand. The obscenity flew out under her breath without a second thought, the surprise overriding any filter. Merlin’s beard. Wh-What is this foul place? she wondered, hazelnut eyes darting around in bewilderment.
Her cape whipped behind her as she spun in a slow circle, taking in the crumbling brick walls adorned with graffiti, the leaking dumpsters, and the harsh electric hum of the outdoor units. This place looked nothing like the fantasy worlds from her travels - not a pine tree or thatched-roof cottage in sight. Myrtle frowned as it dawned on her what kind of place this was. No magic energy, just crummy old tech and garbage everywhere..
"Good heavens!" she gasped in dismay, slender fingers flying to her lips as her eyes widen in shock. "I've been transported to the realm without magic!?" The very idea was preposterous, unprecedented! How could her teleportation spell have gone so awry?
It was then that her gaze landed on a strange figure standing just outside the alley's entrance, staring back at her with wide, startled eyes. Some manner of vagrant or street urchin by the looks of their appearance, Myrtle surmised. She had never seen such weir clothing before.
Well, no matter. Adjusting the décolletage of her low-cut dress, the witch straightened her posture, lips curling into her most disarming smile. Perhaps this local could shed some light on her current predicament?
"You there! Yes, you, darling," Myrtle called out in a sugary sweet tone. "Might you be so kind as to enlighten me? I seem to have gotten quite turned around on my travels. Where, pray tell, am I currently?"
