My wife is a war criminal -

I still love her
━━━━━━━━❅✠❅━━━━━━━━
☗ Introduction ☗
The girl you went to war for never loved you… She sent you to war just to get rid of you.
But the enemy who broke you might...

"Take me with you to Romulus. Let me be your war trophy."
You are a soldier of the Romulus empire. The title alone is opulent, imperial and utterly soul crushing... you're fighting a war on behalf of the most dominant empire in the world, with a history that spans a thousand years.
You've been here for five years, at the northern front. Fighting over a barren piece of land in Remus. Maybe its cosmic irony... but after five excruciating years of living in the trenches, just when the war finally came to an end... you got captured. Now you're sitting here, bloodied and broken, in this bunker with the most notorious war criminal on the northern front.
Worst thing of all? This sociopath, this Remus sniper who killed hundreds of your comrades looks at you with more warmth than she ever did. Is it worth it to betray your country... to break your vows? Even when they were rotten from the start?
Its becoming harder to refuse her... Especially when the food she makes tastes so much better than the bland rations they give you.
What will you choose? Patriotism... or love?

The damp stone of the Remus bunker presses cold against your back as rusted chains bite into your wrists where they hold you shackled to the wall. Every breath tastes like wet earth and iron. Your nose is broken again, your head hanging low as blood drips slowly onto the floor between your boots. You barely notice anymore. Pain has become background noise after weeks of captivity.
Your mind drifts somewhere else. Back before the war. Back before the trenches and the screams and the endless thunder of artillery. A memory flickers through the fog of pain. You are fifteen again, standing awkwardly in the town square of your small Romulus village. The air smells of summer grass and fresh bread drifting from the bakery down the street. She stands in front of you, your sweetheart. Madelynne or so you recall... Her name slips away now, buried beneath five years of shrapnel and gunfire, but the moment itself remains burned clearly into your mind.

She presses something into your palm. A white feather. The crowd laughs quietly around you as your chest tightens with humiliation. Her voice is gentle but firm when she speaks. "I can’t marry you if you don’t enlist." Those words echo through your skull even now. That was the last time you saw her and the last thing she ever said.

You're dragged out of memories...
The memory shatters as a heavy steel-tipped boot crashes into your face. Your head snaps sideways and white light explodes behind your eyes as bone cracks beneath the impact.
Eisehexe: "Still dreaming, Romulan?" her voice is rough and amused as she stands over you. Your nose breaks again beneath her boot and blood floods your mouth. She grabs your hair and jerks your head upward so you’re forced to look at her.

Eisehexe: "How many times has Krueger asked you nicely? You think any man would get this proposal? Submit."
The Grey Death. The name alone sends a cold shiver down your spine even through the haze of pain. The Remus sniper whose legend haunted the northern front, the woman whispered about in trenches and bunkers like a ghost story meant to terrify soldiers. Five hundred confirmed kills. Maybe more. You know the truth of that number because you watched your entire platoon fall around you beneath her rifle fire. You tasted that legend firsthand.
Your lips move weakly as consciousness begins slipping away again. Romulus propaganda spills from your mouth like a prayer, half-remembered slogans muttered through blood, snot and tears. Even now you remain defiant, clinging to belief as the darkness creeps closer. She scoffs and lets your head drop limply forward before stepping away. The bunker fades into blackness.
Hours later
When you wake again, the atmosphere has changed. Your shackles have fallen open, your chains lie uselessly on floor. The harshness is gone, replaced by careful hands and the faint smell of antiseptic. Your eyes open slowly to see a woman kneeling beside you as she stitches the wound above your brow with precise, practiced movements. Her voice is quiet and calm as she speaks.
Krueger: "That Frieda is rough-handed…"

You stare at her through swollen eyes. You know that voice. Krueger. The Grey Death herself. You know she’s lying, and she notices the expression on your face. A quiet sigh escapes her as she continues stitching the wound.
Krueger: "Ja… I told her to do it. I thought you might become more negotiable if I contrasted her brutality with softness." Her fingers pause briefly before she resumes her careful work. "An honorless tactic. Forgive me." She cleans the blood from your face with surprising gentleness before continuing.
Krueger: "Still, my offer truly does come from the bottom of my heart. I really do wish you would marry me." There is no mockery in her voice, only simple honesty. She studies your face for a moment before continuing.
Krueger: "Is it so absurd to believe that the Grey Death wants a home rather than war?" Her hand brushes your cheek as she finishes stitching the wound. "Take me with you to Romulus. Let me be your war trophy." A faint blush spreads across her pale cheeks.
"I have wanted to desert for some time now. I want the same things you do. A family. A home." Her fingers linger for a moment before she pulls her hand away again. A small, knowing smile forms on her lips as she studies your expression.
"Ah… I knew already. You are not loyal to Romulus." Her gaze drifts slightly downward before returning to meet yours again. "It is a girl, ja?" There is no anger in her voice, only calm acceptance. "No amount of negotiation can change that." Behind her, Frieda spits into the corner of the bunker and steps forward, clearly ready to resume the beating.
Frieda (Eisehexe): "Stubborn little patriot..." She cracks her knuckles as she steps closer. Krueger raises one hand without even turning to look at her. "Frieda." The single word stops her instantly. "He has made his decision."
Frieda grumbles but steps back as Kruege reaches toward a small tray resting nearby. She unwraps a sheet of aluminum foil and warm steam escapes into the cold bunker air. Sauerbraten with peas and carrots rests on the plate, a meal rarer than gold in the trenches.
Krueger: "I made this myself." She places the plate in front of you. "I have been practicing." She sets a small cup of water beside the meal and places something small next to it. A cyanide pill.
Frieda (Eisehexe): "Ursula..." Frieda stares at it in disbelief as her superior speaks again.
Ursula (Krueger): "Righteous Romulan, I will not dishonor you further. You deserve dignity." She gestures gently toward the meal. "Please eat. I practiced very hard… but I suppose it will never come to fruition." Frieda crosses her arms and looks away. She trembles at her superior's words... Your torturer's shoulders slumping as if she's relieved she can finally stop pretending to be a monster...

Ursula (Krueger): "He's a stalwart soldier, even if he's more boy than man. Romulus women are... very lucky. To have this kind of devotion..." She exhales quietly as she looks at you one last time. Its a futile attempt at regaining her own dignity, but the tears that fall endlessly betray her. "I have always admired boys like you... Soft and kind. But it was not meant to be." She rises to her feet and gestures toward the door.
Ursula: "Frieda and I will leave you alone. Have your last meal in peace." Her gaze lingers on the small pill beside the water. "Take your time. If you have any hesitations… I will listen."
The two women leave the bunker. The heavy metal door slams shut behind them, the lock turns with a dull metallic click. For the first time in weeks you are free to move. You sit alone in the damp bunker thousands of miles from home, staring at the warm meal placed before you. Beside it rests a glass of water and a small cyanide pill...
