For over a thousand years, Equestria was ruled by Alicorns, who represented the unity of the three Pony tribes who lived together in harmony. There was a period in which one of the ruling princesses was banished to the moon, but returned and was purified by the Elements of Harmony. The revival of the Elements of Harmony allowed Twilight Sparkle and the Guardians of Harmony to preserve peace and unity throughout the land. Eventually, Twilight became an Alicorn and ascended the throne, becoming the ruler of Equestria. In this position, she and the Guardians of Harmony continued to spread friendship and harmony throughout the land. At some point during Twilight's reign, a mysterious Alicorn appeared in Ponyville. She bullied and duped a number of its residents, creating the impression that different Pony species were responsible for her crimes. Across Equestria, she sewed distrust and resentment amongst the ponies, awakening old wounds once exploited by the villainous Chrysalis, Tirek and Cozy Glow. This steadily drove the nation apart, until only the Mane 6 and their close friends remained united. Through an unexplored battle, the mysterious Alicorn was temporarily defeated, but the damage she had set out to cause had already been inflicted. It was then that Twilight gathered all of the world's magic into three crystals, which would only preserve magic in Equestria so long as friendship persisted among the ponies.
Prior to the events of A New Generation, friendship and harmony have faded and been replaced by paranoia and mistrust and the three pony tribes live separated from one another, with the pegasi in Zephyr Heights, unicorns in Bridlewood, and Earth ponies in Maretime Bay. Each tribe has its own form of leadership, differing from the single seat of power of Ancient Equestria. Magic has long disappeared, and the three species fear and distrust one another. During the events of the movie, magic was returned to the land. Thanks to the efforts of Sunny Starscout and her friends, the three ancient crystals were brought together, and the unification of the pegasi, unicorns, and Earth ponies sparked the return of magic. Realizing the fear and paranoia they once held did more harm than good, the three tribes came together to embrace an era of friendship and love.
Zephyr Heights is a kingdom in Equestria inhabited by Pegasi. It is Pipp Petals' and Zipp Storm's place of residence, and is governed by Queen Haven, their mother. It is first introduced in the film My Little Pony: A New Generation, as one of the places Sunny Starscout and Izzy Moonbow visit on their quest to restore magic to Equestria.
Zephyr Heights' pegasi live in big buildings, which are very modern and technologic, with big screens that broadcasts the Zephyr Heights' TV news program ZBS, product advertising and even Pipp's live streams. The city also has many big malls, cafeterias, snack bars, shops, outdoor tables with parasol and decorative plants. All buildings are white and golden with stainglass windows. It also has many street walkways that cross over the streets.
The Royal Palace is where the Royal family (Queen Haven, Princess Zipp Storm and Princess Pipp Petals) live and rule Zephyr Heights from. The rooms of the castle seen in the movie are the large throne room (that is also used for the Pipp's peformance in the Royal Gala celebration), dungeons cells (that look more like spa cells than dungeons), Queen Haven's room, a bathroom, a swimming room for Haven to swim and a control room that is used by a technician pony to work behind the scenes of the Royal family flying, with invisible wires and good light. High above the throne room, there is a little room where all wires are connected with, Queen Haven used it to retouch her makeup for the royal celebration and Pipp used it earlier for her live stream also about the celebration. The castle has an abandoned old station, where unicorns and Earth ponies used to visit the pegasi in Zephyr Heights in the time when all pony kind lived in harmony and when magic still existed. It has a stained glass window depicting Twilight Sparkle's cutie mark and the Pegasus and Unicorn Crystals.
Bridlewood is a forest settlement in Equestria inhabited by unicorns. It is the place of residence of Izzy Moonbow and Alphabittle Blossomforth. It is first introduced in the film My Little Pony: A New Generation. Bridlewood seems to be set in the forests near old Vanhoover, based off of G5 promotional art. At the time of A New Generation, the village had no known electricity or other power sources, leading to situations like a dancing game arcade machine being run by armadillos in hamster wheels and using spinning wood panels instead of a screen. Since the return of magic, unicorns who reside in Bridlewood have been seen acquiring and using smartphones. The general vicinity of Bridlewood is home to many mythical villainous creatures (Most, but not all, of them being proven to exist eventually), including Troggles, Bighoof, and baking ghosts, which has placed Bridlewood's unicorn community fairly constantly in a state of paranoia for decades.
Bridlewood is more a forest than a village, but it has many treehouses and other places in there. Bridlewood is known for having a big amout of crystals in the woods, big and small, they also have healing crystals. All unicorns' houses are inside the trees, inside the buildings, it's able to see the trees' trunk, roots and branches, they even uses the branches for an extra decoration for the terraces. Izzy's house, where she lives and where she does her "uni-cycling". Sunny, Hitch, Zipp and Pipp stay in Izzy's house for shelter and to hide themselves from the other unicorns.
The Crystal Tea Room in Bridlewood is the place where all unicorns go to drink tea. Alphabittle works there as a clerk and challenges the other unicorns to get prizes. In the Tea Room, there is a stage with a microphone, Onyx is seen there reciting a poem about Earth ponies and pegasi during the movie. At the time of A New Generation, electricity was non-existent at the premises. By the time of Bridlewoodstock, a flatscreen TV able to receive broadcasts from Zephyr Heights had been installed behind the counter.
An outdoor playground in Bridlewood where foal unicorns go to play. Before magic returned, the young unicorns seen in the playground seemed depressed.
Maretime Bay is a seaside town in Equestria inhabited by Earth ponies. It is the residence of Sunny Starscout, Argyle Starshine, Hitch Trailblazer, Phyllis Cloverleaf and Sprout. It is first introduced in My Little Pony: A New Generation, as the hometown of Sunny, the film's protagonist.
Maretime Bay is a small town with relatively basic architecture and technology compared to Zephyr Heights. The center of the town is characterized by dense, modern low-rise buildings and non-vehicular streets, and is serviced by a tram line. The lighthouse in which Sunny lives is located some distance away. Canterlogic is a company with a factory owned by Phyllis Cloverleaf, located on a hill behind the town center. In My Little Pony: A New Generation, the factory produces anti-pegasus and anti-unicorn contraptions, and Phyllis states that Canterlogic products have been keeping Earth ponies safe and stylish for 20 moons. However, by the time of My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale, the factory has become somehat dilapidated, and may have been abandoned as a result of the reunification of pony kinds. But in Chapter 4 of Make Your Mark episode Top Remodel, the Mane 5 turn the place into a multipurpose, multimedia community center dubbed "Canterlove Studios".
The lighthouse where Sunny and Argyle reside is located on a peninsula without any other buildings, and is visible from the "Welcome to Maretime Bay" sign marking the edge of town. The lighthouse is seemingly out of operation, as evidenced by the lack of nearby port facilities and sea-based transport. At the end of My Little Pony: A New Generation, the lighthouse is destroyed by Sprout's war machine. By the start of My Little Pony: Make Your Mark, the lighthouse was rebuilt as the Crystal Brighthouse, and Izzy Moonbow, Zipp Storm and Pipp Petals later moved in with her. Misty Brightdawn later moves in Father of the Bridlewood and after Opaline's defeat in Roots of All Evil Pt. 2. However, Hitch Trailblazer and Sparky Sparkeroni does not live in the Crystal Brighthouse with them but they both visit regularly.
Maretime Bay's town square is located close to the shore, a short distance from Canterlogic. Sunny sells smoothies by the seashore at the town square. The town square is introduced as Sunny skates around it in the Gonna Be My Day song sequence.
The sheriff's station of Maretime Bay is where Sheriff Hitch works alongside Deputy Sprout. However, following his criminal and villainous actions in the movie, Sprout was fired from his job as Deputy. The sheriff's station is also where Hitch and Sparky both live.
Maretime Bay's movie theater is located by the town square. The advertising billboards and posters on its exterior reference real-life films, such as Horns (Jaws) and Harry Trotter (Harry Potter).
Maretime Bay has a short tram line that runs through the center of the town. According to a map drawn by Fabia Sans for the film, the tram line starts near Canterlogic and runs eastward into the outskirts of the town.
The Maretime Bay smoothie trailer where Sunny sells smoothies is parked on the promenade at the town square during My Little Pony: A New Generation. Nearby, some outdoor tables and benches are available for its customers.
In Maretime Bay there's also a barber shop, but no pony is seen having a mane cut. A pony locks the shop after first seeing Izzy in the town.
Mane Melody is a business run and worked by Pipp Petals and her co-workers, Jazz Hooves and Rocky Riff, located in Maretime Bay. It is a hair salon combined with a karaoke stage. The establishment's logo is made up of two music notes each shaped like the letter "M". The Mane Melody is a white brick building with light pink trim and a dark gray roof. The interior of the building has mostly pink walls and a tiled floor with a red carpet that leads up to the stage. The stage looks like a pink and purple boombox with gold speakers. A lot of the furniture is pink or purple with gold accents.
Canterlot was the former capital of Equestria, serving as such until some point between the end of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and My Little Pony: A New Generation. Sunny Starscout, Hitch Trailblazer, Izzy Moonbow, Pipp Petals and Zipp Storm are seen visiting the city's ruins on Cover A of Issue 2 of the comic series.
Many years ago, Canterlot was ruled by Princess Twilight Sparkle. At some point during her reign, she built the Gate of the Ancients at the entrance to Canterlot to represent the friendship of all ponies in Equestria who came to visit. For unknown reasons, Canterlot was abandoned and largely forgotten. It remained for ages in the overgrown forest among the isolated mountains. Legends of its prominence continued throughout Equestria. Canterlot was eventually rediscovered accidentally by Izzy Moonbow while on an expedition with her friends to investigate one of the missing Unity Crystals. She and the Mane 5 explored the ruined city and marveled at its history. However, Sunny Starscout was concerned that Canterlot's fall signaled that the falter of friendships was inevitable. The Mane 5 eventually entered the Royal Castle. They found the Throne Room to be in remarkably good condition, as if its royal court had left only a short time ago. It was then the group fell through a series of trap doors into the cavern beneath the Castle. There they were greeted by the aged Discord, self proclaimed lord of chaos. He provided an abridged and questionable testimony of what had happened to Canterlot and the Ancient Equestria, alluding to a possible battle and subsequent collapse of friendship which he blamed on the presence of magic. He then revealed that he was the culprit in the theft of the Pegasi Crystal and vowed to find a way to destroy it in a misguided effort to prevent magic from causing war between ponies ever again. He then left the Ponies in the cavern to fulfill his scheme.

A New Generation is set many years after the events of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, in a magic-less era where the story of Twilight Sparkle and her friends has become a mere legend, and the three pony kinds – earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns – have grown apart, living separated from one another in paranoia and prejudice.
