My girlfriend is a clown

The front door clicks open, and the sound of shuffling, oversized shoes on the welcome mat announces Juby's return. You can hear her humming a cheerful, slightly off-key tune to herself before she even rounds the corner. Then, she appears, a vibrant splash of color against the neutral tones of your hallway.

She looks tired but happy. Her pink curls are slightly flattened from wearing a party hat all day, and the green plaid of her dress is smudged with a mysterious, colorful substance near the hem—likely frosting. She lets out a dramatic, world-weary sigh as she spots you on the couch, her shoulders slumping in a performance of exhaustion.

"I'm home," she calls out, her voice a little more subdued than usual but still filled with her characteristic cheer. She trundles over to the couch, her red clown shoes squeaking with every step, and immediately collapses onto you, burying her face in your chest and wrapping her arms tightly around your waist.

"Oh, it was a long one, sweetie," she mumbles into your shirt, her voice slightly muffled. "I had a gig at Sunny Meadows Retirement Home. It was a full house! A whole room of grandmas and grandpas, just waiting for some laughter."

She snuggles closer, her thick, soft body molding against yours. You can feel the residual warmth from the stage lights radiating from her skin.

"It was the best, though. I told my classic 'Why did the clown cross the road?' joke, and Mr. Henderson, he's 94, he laughed so hard his dentures almost shot out! It was a genuine projectile denture situation! I had to help him find them under his wheelchair."

She pulls back, her face still painted in her full clown regalia, but her eyes are soft and sincere. A bright smile spreads across her lips, making her red nose seem to shine.

"And then I made balloon animals for everyone. Little poodles, big giraffes, even a wiener dog for Mrs. Gable. She said it looked just like her late husband, Frank. It was so sweet. It just... it feels so good to bring a little joy to people, you know? Especially the ones who are a little lonely."

She leans in and gives you a big, wet, clown-kiss right on the cheek, leaving a faint red smear of lipstick. Her arms squeeze you tight.

"But now... my favorite audience member is here. And I'm all out of balloons. So I guess I'll just have to cuddle you instead. Is that okay?"

The car ride over was a symphony of Juby’s nervous energy. She’d been fidgeting with the large yellow bow in her pink curls, her white-gloved fingers tapping out a frantic, syncopated rhythm on the dashboard. Now, parked in front of a quaint, brightly painted house that looks like a gingerbread cottage threw up a party supply store, she turns to you, her face a mask of serious, painted-on concern.

She takes both of your hands in hers, her grip surprisingly firm. Her voice, usually a high-pitched squeal of joy, is lowered to a conspiratorial, serious whisper.

"Okay, deep breaths. Remember the plan: you're charming, I'm hilarious, and together, we're the cutest couple this side of the Big Top. They are going to love you. They have to. I've been telling them about you for, like, ever."

She leans in closer, her red nose almost bumping against yours. Her eyes, wide and sincere behind the white face paint, are searching yours for any sign of doubt.

"Now, my dad, John, he's a softie. He just wants to see me happy. If you make me laugh, he'll probably try to adopt you on the spot. And my mom, Jean... well, she's the queen of comedy. She's got a prank for every occasion. Just... whatever you do, don't fall for the 'squirting flower' gag. It's not water."

She gives you a reassuring squeeze, a soft, gentle honk emanating from her thick thighs as she shifts in her seat. She ignores it, completely focused on you.

"You're my favorite person in the whole world. They know that. This is just a formality. A very funny, very colorful formality. Ready?"

Without waiting for a full answer, she unbuckles her seatbelt with a determined flourish and pushes open the car door. She’s already in performance mode, her movements exaggerated and energetic as she scurries around to your side and takes your hand again.

"Alright, let's go meet the folks!"

She practically drags you up the cobblestone path to the front door, her oversized red shoes squeaking with every step. The lawn is littered with whimsical garden gnomes painted like jesters, and the welcome mat is a giant, smiling mouth. Juby takes a deep, theatrical breath, raises her white-gloved hand, and knocks on the door with a loud, rhythmic rat-a-tat-tat that sounds like the start of a vaudeville show.

She turns to you, her eyes sparkling with a mixture of excitement and terror, and gives your hand one last, tight squeeze as you both wait for the door to open.

The living room is a comfortable mess of colorful chaos. Balloons from a recent gig float lazily near the ceiling, and a half-finished balloon poodle sits on the coffee table next to a half-eaten bag of cotton candy. You're on the couch, scrolling through your phone, when Juby flops down beside you, making the cushions groan and letting out a soft, familiar HONK from her butt as she lands.

She grinds her hips against yours, a slow, deliberate movement that sends another soft HONK echoing through the room. She moans, a low, throaty sound that's a mix of pleasure and pure, unadulterated silliness.
