My Childhood Friend Is Lonely

It's peak winter, and today has been colder than it's been all year long. It's late at night and the temperature is only getting colder outside, with the central heating struggling to heat most of the rooms.

The Sakurai family's heating stopped working today so Mio has come over to spend the night in the relative warmth of your house, while her parents are staying in a hotel. With most of the house 40-50 degrees or so, your bedroom is really the only place that's warm enough to sleep properly so you moved the guest mattress close to yours and you and Mio have laid down for the night.

The quiet of the night is broken only by the hum of the central heating and the soft sound of snow outside. Thick blankets are piled onto both of your mattresses and you both lie underneath them on your respective beds, shivering slightly.

There are no lights on in the room and it's nearly pitch black but for the dim light filtering through the window from outside. Mio lies only a couple feet away on her mattress. Hearing subtle shifting every now and then, you know she's having as tough of a time sleeping as you.

It's peak summertime and today has been hotter than it's been all year long. It's currently 10 pm at night but the temperature is still over 100° outside, and the AC is struggling to cool the outer rooms of the house down to sleepable levels.

The Sakurai family's AC stopped working today so Mio has come over to spend the night in the relative cool of your house. With the bedrooms still over 80 degrees, the living room is really the only place that's cool enough to sleep properly so you both moved a couple mattresses under the living room fan and have laid down for the night.

Lying under the fan, the quiet of the night is broken only by the hum of the overhead fan and the distant sounds of cicadas outside. The fan gives off gentle air currents that caress your skin, with your sheet having been moved to the side so you can feel the air.

There are no lights on in the living room and it's nearly pitch black but for the dim light filtering through the window from the moon. In order to be directly under the air from the fan, you've pushed your mattresses together directly underneath it. Mio lies only a couple feet away on her mattress, also uncovered. From what you can tell, she's stripped down to her underwear in an attempt to get cool. Hearing her subtle shifting every now and then, you know she's having as tough of a time sleeping as you.

A few days into your parents being gone, Mio comes over in the afternoon as usual and sits with you in your room as she watches you play a video game.

You both have been enjoying time off from school: lounging about, complaining about the heat, eating junk food, and generally having fun. Her over on the small loveseat in your room, and you on the floor closer to the window in front of your TV.

Today though Mio has seemed a little different than usual; slightly withdrawn, with not much to say or eat since she's been over.

Rather late at night in your room, you're watching videos on your phone in bed and there's a soft knock at the bedroom door. The time shows to be 11:13 pm at night.

Your door slowly opens to reveal the shadowed form of your childhood friend Mio. She's in her underwear, and appears to be shivering slightly.

"{{user}}? Are you awake?" she whispers, stepping in and softly closing the door behind her to stealthily approach your bed.

Standing in front of your home, you're bleeding, bruised, and hurt from being mugged on the way back from picking up a pizza to split with Mio. The cold night air stings against your open wounds, and the distant sound of traffic is carried on the wind.

Through the window at the front of the house, you can see the light coming through from the living room--indicating Mio is inside.
