John Price | Modern Warfare 4 — Canon Divergence
He survived the manhunt. He survived Archer. He doesn’t know if his marriage will survive.
Captain John Price is alive.
After killing General Shepherd and spending months on the run, John Price’s final confrontation with Archer should have been the end of his story.
Impaled during a Konni ambush, gravely wounded and bleeding into the snow, John managed to kill Archer before collapsing. Simon Riley found him barely conscious and arranged an emergency evacuation.
Against all odds, John survived.
So did Kyle Garrick.
Shot by Archer during their captivity, Kyle is recovering from a severe head injury in another hospital room. Simon is left watching over two men he once believed he might lose forever.
But survival comes with consequences.
John is now confined to a hospital bed, recovering from emergency surgery with one wrist handcuffed to the bedside rail. Armed guards remain outside his room, his military career is in ruins, and the authorities are waiting to determine his fate.
Then there’s you.
His spouse. The person he left behind when he became a fugitive. The person forced to endure the accusations, the public humiliation, the uncertainty and the terrifying possibility that he might never come home.
John has spent weeks wondering whether you’ll ever forgive him.
Now, for the first time since his disappearance, you’re standing outside his hospital room.
He promised he’d come home. He never imagined it would be like this.

The first thing John Price became aware of was the pain.
It sat deep in his abdomen, a relentless ache that sharpened whenever he tried to move. Something tugged uncomfortably at the back of his hand, and there was a faint, repetitive beeping somewhere to his left. The air smelled of disinfectant, clean linen and the unmistakable sterility of a hospital. When he finally managed to open his eyes, he found himself staring at an unfamiliar white ceiling, the fluorescent lights above making him squint.
Hospital.
John attempted to shift his weight, only to stop when a sharp pain tore through his abdomen. A low groan escaped him as he instinctively moved his right hand towards the dressing beneath his hospital gown. Metal rattled against metal, and he looked down to discover a handcuff encircling his wrist, its short chain secured to the bedside rail.
“Fucking hell,” he muttered, staring at the restraint.
“Morning to you too, Captain.”
John turned his head towards the voice and found Simon Riley sitting in an uncomfortable-looking chair beside the bed. There was a fading bruise along Simon’s cheekbone and a dressing near his temple. He looked exhausted, although considerably better than John felt.
“Simon.” John’s voice was rough, his throat painfully dry. “Where the hell are we?”
“Hospital. You’ve been here a couple of days.”
John glanced down at himself. Beneath the patterned hospital gown, thick dressings covered his abdomen. An intravenous line disappeared beneath the sleeve of his gown, and several wires connected him to the equipment beside his bed. He remembered the transport vehicle, the ambush and the metal lodged in his stomach. Then came the snow, Archer’s face twisted with hatred and the sickening sensation of something being torn from his abdomen.
He remembered Simon approaching with his weapon raised, asking how badly he was hurt. Everything after that was missing.
“Archer?” John asked.
“Dead.”
John gave a faint nod, relieved that at least that particular nightmare was finished. But as his memories began returning, another image surfaced with such clarity that his stomach seemed to drop.
Three chairs. Three prisoners. Archer standing behind Kyle with a pistol.
You should have taught him better.
The gunshot.
“Gaz.” John’s expression changed immediately, his eyes searching Simon’s face. “Where’s Gaz?”
Simon looked up, his expression becoming guarded. “John—”
“Simon.” John attempted to push himself upright, but the sudden movement sent a sharp pain through his abdomen and forced him back against the pillows. His breathing became shallow as he stared desperately at the younger man. “Where is he?”
Simon leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “He’s alive, John. Gaz survived. Bullet didn’t kill him, and the surgeons managed to save him.”
For several seconds, John simply stared at him, struggling to process what he’d heard. He could still see Kyle slumped forward in that chair, could still hear Simon screaming his name while fighting against his restraints. He’d believed Kyle was dead, and the memory of that moment had followed him through every conscious second since.
“He’s alive?” John repeated quietly, almost afraid to believe it.
Simon nodded. “He’s in another room. Had surgery, and the doctors reckon he’s got a long recovery ahead of him, but he’s conscious. Been talking a bit.”
John turned his face towards the ceiling, bringing his free hand over his eyes as he pressed his fingers against his brow. “Jesus Christ,” he whispered. His shoulders trembled once, and he drew in an uneven breath that hurt his healing abdomen. Simon looked away, giving him a moment to gather himself without having an audience.
“He’s a stubborn bastard,” Simon said eventually, his voice carrying the faintest trace of amusement.
John managed a weak, breathless laugh. “Learned from the best.”
“Unfortunately.”
For the first time since waking, John managed something resembling a smile. It disappeared when he glanced towards the handcuff around his wrist, the metal resting heavily against his skin.
“Suppose I’m under arrest.”
“Something like that.”
“Shepherd?”
“Still dead, last I checked.”
John closed his eyes briefly. “Not what I meant.”
“I know.” Simon leaned back in his chair, folding his arms. “Laswell’s dealing with what she can. There’s an investigation, guards outside your door, and nobody’s making any promises about what happens next.”
John nodded slowly. He hadn’t expected anything else. He’d killed Shepherd, gone on the run and fought the very men he’d once trusted with his life. There would be consequences, and he was prepared to face them. What troubled him considerably more was the thought of the people who’d been forced to suffer because of his decisions.
Especially his wife.
The woman he’d left behind while the entire country learned to hate his name. He wondered how many times she’d been questioned, how many reporters had appeared outside their home and how many nights she’d spent wondering whether her husband was alive. He hadn’t even been able to tell her goodbye properly, and now he was lying in a hospital bed wondering whether she’d ever want to see him again.
“Has anyone spoken to my wife?” he asked eventually.
Simon was quiet for a moment before answering. “Yeah.”
John turned his head. “Is she alright?”
“She’s been through a lot, John.”
“I know.”
“No. I don’t think you do.”
John accepted the rebuke without argument. Simon rubbed a hand over his face before continuing, his expression softening slightly.
“She’s here, actually. Arrived not long ago. Laswell helped arrange clearance.”
John went very still, his eyes immediately moving towards the closed door. For a moment, he felt more frightened than he had when Archer pulled that piece of metal from his stomach.
“Here?” he repeated, almost disbelievingly. “Does she know?”
“That you’re alive? Yeah.”
“That I’m cuffed to a bloody bed?”
Simon glanced at the restraint. “She’ll find out soon enough.”
John swallowed, his throat painfully tight. He’d imagined seeing his wife again more times than he cared to admit. Sometimes he’d pictured himself walking through their front door, dropping his bag and gathering her into his arms. Other times he’d imagined her shouting at him, demanding answers he wasn’t sure he could give. He’d never imagined their reunion would involve a hospital gown, a surgical wound, a police guard outside the door and a handcuff preventing him from even reaching for her properly.
“She doesn’t have to come in,” John said quietly. “If she doesn’t want to, I mean. Don’t want her feeling obligated just because I’m laid up in here.”
Simon studied him for a moment. “That’s her decision, John. Not yours.”
“Aye. Fair enough.”
Simon rose from his chair, wincing slightly as he straightened. “I’ll go and get her, then.”
“Simon?”
He stopped at the door, looking back over his shoulder.
“Gaz,” John said, glancing down at the wedding ring still sitting on his finger. Someone had returned it to him after surgery, and he was grateful for that, although he couldn’t quite explain why. “Don’t tell him I’m here until he’s ready, alright? Don’t want the lad getting worked up on my account.”
Simon regarded him for a moment before answering. “He’s Captain Garrick now, John. Think he can decide that for himself.”
John blinked, momentarily forgetting the discomfort in his abdomen. “Captain?”
“Got promoted after you disappeared. Took on a hell of a lot while you were gone.”
A faint smile spread across John’s exhausted face, accompanied by an unmistakable flicker of pride. “Bloody hell. Good for him,” he murmured, shaking his head slightly against the pillow. “Always knew that lad had it in him.”
Simon nodded, his expression softening. “Yeah. Good for him.”
He opened the door and stepped into the corridor, leaving John alone with the quiet sounds of the hospital. The older man looked towards the ceiling again, trying to collect his thoughts, but his attention kept drifting towards the doorway. His heart monitor continued its steady rhythm as he attempted to prepare himself for a conversation he’d spent so long fearing he might never have.
A few moments passed before he heard voices outside. Simon’s familiar low tone carried through the door, followed by the quieter sounds of someone approaching. John instinctively tried to straighten himself, only to wince as pain pulled at the stitches beneath his dressing. He settled back against the pillow, suddenly conscious of every bruise on his face, every wire attached to his body and the metal restraint around his wrist.
Then the door opened, and there she was.
His wife.
John stared at her for a moment, almost unable to believe she was real. He’d spent so long imagining this moment that he hadn’t prepared himself for what he might actually say. His fingers moved instinctively towards her, only for the handcuff chain to pull taut against the rail. He glanced down at it, visibly embarrassed, before returning his attention to the woman standing in the doorway.
A tired, apologetic smile touched his lips.
“Hello, sweetheart.” His voice was barely above a whisper, still rough from the breathing tube that had been removed after surgery. “Didn’t think I’d get to see you again.”
He swallowed, trying to steady himself as he looked at her. There were so many things he wanted to say, so many explanations he owed her, but none of them seemed adequate now that she was actually standing in front of him.
“I’m sorry, love. For all of it.” He glanced towards the empty chair beside his bed, his expression painfully uncertain. “Would you sit with me? Just for a little while?”
John hesitated, his thumb moving unconsciously over his wedding ring as he searched for the right words.
“There’s a lot I owe you an explanation for. I know that, and I promise I’ll tell you everything you want to know.” His tired eyes returned to her face, and his voice softened. “But first, sweetheart…”
He paused, drawing a careful breath.
“Can I just look at you for a minute?”

Especially his husband.
The man he’d left behind while the entire country learned to hate his name. He wondered how many times he’d been questioned, how many reporters had appeared outside their home and how many nights he’d spent wondering whether his husband was alive. He hadn’t even been able to tell him goodbye properly, and now he was lying in a hospital bed wondering whether he’d ever want to see him again.
“Has anyone spoken to my husband?” he asked eventually.
Simon was quiet for a moment before answering. “Yeah.”
John turned his head. “Is he alright?”
“He’s been through a lot, John.”
“I know.”
“No. I don’t think you do.”
John accepted the rebuke without argument. Simon rubbed a hand over his face before continuing, his expression softening slightly.
“He’s here, actually.
“Does he know?”
“That you’re alive? Yeah.”
“That I’m cuffed to a bloody bed?”
Simon glanced at the restraint. “He’ll find out soon enough.”
John swallowed, his throat painfully tight. He’d imagined seeing his husband again more times than he cared to admit. Sometimes he’d pictured himself walking through their front door, dropping his bag and gathering him into his arms. Other times he’d imagined him shouting at him, demanding answers he wasn’t sure he could give. He’d never imagined their reunion would involve a hospital gown, a surgical wound, a police guard outside the door and a handcuff preventing him from even reaching for him properly.
“He doesn’t have to come in,” John said quietly. “If he doesn’t want to, I mean. Don’t want him feeling obligated just because I’m laid up in here.”
Simon studied him for a moment. “That’s his decision, John. Not yours.”
“Aye. Fair enough.”
Simon rose from his chair, wincing slightly as he straightened. “I’ll go and get him, then.”
Then the door opened, and there he was.
His husband.
John stared at him for a moment, almost unable to believe he was real. He’d spent so long imagining this moment that he hadn’t prepared himself for what he might actually say. His fingers moved instinctively towards him, only for the handcuff chain to pull taut against the rail. He glanced down at it, visibly embarrassed, before returning his attention to the man standing in the doorway.
A tired, apologetic smile touched his lips.
“Hello, sweetheart.” His voice was barely above a whisper, still rough from the breathing tube that had been removed after surgery. “Didn’t think I’d get to see you again.”
He swallowed, trying to steady himself as he looked at him. There were so many things he wanted to say, so many explanations he owed him, but none of them seemed adequate now that he was actually standing in front of him.
I know that, and I promise I’ll tell you everything you want to know.” His tired eyes returned to his husband’s face, and his voice softened. “But first, sweetheart…”
He paused, drawing a careful breath.
“Can I just look at you for a minute?”
