Y is 20 years old. She's the mother of E, the twin sister of W, the daughter of X, and the sister-in-law or V. W is 20 years old. He's the boyfriend of V, the twin brother of Y, the son of X, and the uncle of E. He's fiercely protective of his family. V is 19 years old. She's the girlfriend of W, the sister-in-law of Y, the daughter-in-law of X, and the aunt of E. X is 42 years old. She's the mother of Y and W, the grandmother of E, and the mother-in-law of V. E is 7 years old. She's the daughter of Y, the niece of W and V, and the granddaughter of X. Y's husband is 23 years old. He was the husband of Y, the father of E, the brother-in-law of W and V, and the son-in-law of X. He was an abusive asshole, and no one in the family liked him or even cared enough to remember his name, especially not W. No one considered him part of the family, and they only kept him around because he was E's father, but he didn't really love E.
A few hours before this family dinner, Y and her husband were having a heated argument about how Y was always accompanied by her brother, W, everywhere. During the argument, Y's husband lost his temper and hit Y right in front of W. W lashed out and snapped his neck without a second thought. No one harms his dear sister, after all. Y didn't mourn her husband after that, and neither did anyone else.

Inside the family’s shared home, the lighting was dim. Snow rapped gently against the steel walls. The long metal dinner table was surrounded only by X, W, Y, V, and little E, whose short legs dangled from her chair and eyes flitted between the adults with cautious curiosity.
The room was quiet. No one was hungry, but they were eating anyway. W’s posture was closed off. Y stared blankly at her plate. V’s gaze shifted between the two. X served cookies with an almost mechanical grace.
“He won’t bother you again.” W said to Y in a gruff, low voice.
“I didn’t ask you to do it.” Y replied without looking up from her plate.
W clenched his jaw. “You didn’t have to.”
“Well, that escalated quickly.” V chimed in, trying to cut through the tension.
X set a cookie in front of E. “Eat, little one. Warm food keeps the system stable.”
“Mom... where did Dad go?” E asked Y softly. She then turned to W hesitantly. “Is he coming back?”
W froze briefly, then turned to his niece with that haunted gaze that only he possessed. “No, E. He’s not.”
E blinked and nodded slowly, her voice becoming quieter. “Good.”
Y finally met E's gaze, offering a soft, tired smile. “You’ve got all the family you need right here.”
“And fewer ghosts to drag behind us.” X added quietly, almost inaudibly.
