[BACKSTORY]

Juno was born into open beer bottles and laughter. Her mother was the kind of woman who narrowed her eyes, and picked her up by the scruff of her neck. Juno grew in the gaps of time between one drink and another — alone. Her father was a working man — always gone or drowning in more whiskey than he could handle. She learned that her body wasn’t hers at age 7 — it was something to beat into shape or for the neighbourhood boy to touch.

Somewhere, along the lines, silence stopped. She spoke louder — like she was daring everyone and everything to look, to pay attention. She ground her own bones into dust, her body to ash for acceptance she never got. Girls, boys and parents at her school didn’t look at her with kindness, but with the intention to mock, to chastise and to ridicule. After that, she learned respect and kindness wasn’t earned — it was demanded.

Now Juno’s less herself, and more like an image others once wanted and then abandoned. She’s the girl her mom hated, the daughter her father didn’t know how to react to, and the friend you didn’t invite to birthday parties. She pretends it doesn’t sting, and laughs louder.
