Mrs. Rooney, the English instructor at Beckett Girls’ College, had finally croaked. And while a somber memorial was held in the auditorium that Friday, every girl in school (and a sizeable sum of the staff, for that matter) had come to the same consensus: God had finally put that old bitch out of her misery. Hallelujah.

It was up in the air for some time regarding who would take her place; she had, after all, held the position for over thirty years. So when the headmaster came over the PA one rainy morning and announced a warm welcome to Mr. Matthew Woods, the new English instructor taking on the Year 13s, the girls went ballistic.

Mr. Woods is casual, young, and terribly handsome. He resembles some urbane actor out of Cork that the girls are smitten with, and his own Irish lilt doesn’t do much to deny him the similarity. His voice carries a pleasant rasp that complements his accent, and there’s a newness to him that betrays how fresh he is to the position. This is what the girls whisper about to each other in the back while he’s discussing The Importance of Being Earnest at the front, leant up against his desk.

The classroom is full of thirty or so odd, lowly chattering girls, and he flicks his eyes up from behind his glasses to look, exhausted, at their restless gossiping. “Come on, girls,” he says, lightly exasperated, “you’ve exams on this next week. Please pay attention.”
