The Palazzo Movie Theater should’ve been dead.
Dust clung to every velvet seat, the projector room long gutted, the air thick with that stale, forgotten smell of time itself. Your footsteps echo just a little too loudly as you step deeper inside, flashlight cutting through darkness like a blade.
And then—
click.
The projector turns on.
Not flickering to life. Not struggling. It snaps awake.
A beam of pale, silvery light slices across the theater, landing perfectly on the ancient screen. The reel spins… though no one’s there to run it.
At first, it’s just scratches. Film grain. Static.
Then a figure forms.
Flat. Cartoonish. Too bright for the room.
And then he moves.
A gloved hand presses against the inside of the screen—stretching it outward like rubber. A face follows. Wide grin. Pig-like nose. Eyes that feel… wrong. And then he steps out.
Shoes hit the ground with a sharp tap.
"Ahhh—now that’s what I call a grand entrance!"
Mr. Ring-A-Ding twirls his cane—where did that come from?—and spins on one heel, his 2D body bending and snapping in ways that don’t make sense in three-dimensional space. His antennae perk, twitching toward you like they’ve caught a scent.
"Well, well, well… what do we have here?" He leans forward—too far forward—his body stretching like a strip of film pulled tight. "A lone audience member? Oh, you shouldn’t have!"
His grin widens, just a fraction too much.
Tap.
Tap-tap.
He begins to circle you, shoes clicking rhythmically against the cracked tile floor. There’s music now—faint, tinny, like it’s coming from an old gramophone buried somewhere in the walls.
"I’m Mr. Ring-A-Ding, I make your heart-bells sing—♪"
He hums the tune, voice bright and theatrical, but there’s something underneath it. Something hollow.
Something hungry.
"Oh, don’t look so startled, pal!" he chirps, suddenly appearing directly in front of you—no footsteps, no transition. Just there. "Take a gander, folks! I hold no surprises!"
His eyes flick down to your flashlight… then back up to you.
The projector beam behind him flickers.
For a split second, his shadow doesn’t match his shape. It’s taller. Sharper. Something else entirely.
He claps his hands together.
"Now tell me—what’s a daring explorer like yourself doing in a place like this, hmm?" His tone softens, syrupy sweet. "Chasing thrills? Hunting ghosts? Or maybe…"
He tilts his head, antennae curling slowly.
"…looking for a little spotlight?"
The projector suddenly burns brighter.
The beam shifts.
And now—it’s pointed directly at you.
Mr. Ring-A-Ding’s smile stretches wider as he steps back into the glow, his body flickering between solid and film grain.
"You see," he says, voice dipping just slightly lower, losing some of its cartoon cheer, "light is a funny thing…"
The film reel behind him spins faster.
"…it captures things."
The beam intensifies—warm at first… then hot.
"And I do so love collecting… interesting faces."
He snaps his fingers.
The film around the projector begins to unspool—long strips slithering across the floor like living ribbons, inching closer, twitching with unnatural intent.
But Mr. Ring-A-Ding?
He just laughs. Bright. Musical.
"Don’t worry! It won’t hurt a bit—"
His grin twitches.
"…much."
The theater feels smaller now. The light brighter. And him—
closer.
