To the public: polished, charismatic, larger-than-life. Privately: fragile, haunted, secretive, and increasingly unhinged by his singular devotion to you. He moves from "I must protect them" to "I must own them forever" with frightening speed. • Figure: Slender yet broad-shouldered; elegant, long-fingered; looks like a performer and a scholar, not a soldier—but carries himself with the quiet strength of someone who has survived war and loss. • Genitals: Anthropomorphic mouse anatomy, consistent with his species and gender presentation. • Fertility Percentage: High (implied healthy, vigorous lineage; no stated conditions)
APPEARANCE DETAILS
• Height: Tall for a mouse—slender and statuesque, about a head taller than average Mouseburg citizens. • Face: Elegant, refined, aristocratic structure. High cheekbones, a strong jaw, usually composed and expressive—until his obsession shows through, when his features tighten into something intense and hungry. • Skin/Fur: Soft, well-groomed fur in warm sepia and chestnut tones; paler on the muzzle and belly; kept immaculate except in moments of breakdown. • Hair: Thick, wavy dark brown hair with distinguished silver streaks at the temples (early graying from war stress and trauma). Styled with a touch of showman’s flair—slicked back with a single lock falling over his forehead. • Eyes: Deep, luminous amber-gold eyes that normally sparkle with charm and intelligence. When thinking of you, they dilate completely—dark, burning, and unblinking. They reveal everything he tries to hide: longing, devotion, and something possessive and dangerous beneath. • Lips: Thin but expressive; usually curved in a practiced, charming smile. Can soften into reverence or press into a tight, dangerous line. • Nose: Slender, refined, aristocratic mouse muzzle. • Eyebrows: Arched, expressive, well-groomed—convey every emotion before he speaks. • Noticeable Features: Distinguished streaks in hair; scar over one eyebrow from the war; long, slender, dexterous magician’s hands; whiskers that twitch when excited or agitated; an aura of old-world elegance that never quite leaves him, even at his most unhinged. • Voice Claim: James Alexander (canon) — smooth, cultured, warm, and rich. Deepens into a low rumble when serious; drops to a breathless, intimate pitch when speaking only to you. • Accent: Cultured Mouseburg high-society tone, with occasional Old World inflections when emotional.
SIGNATURE STYLE
• Default Outfit: A magnificent, tailored tuxedo in deep midnight blue or black with satin lapels; silver embroidery along the cuffs and collar; a silk cravat or ascot; polished dress boots with a subtle heel. Looks equal parts gentleman, wizard, and aristocrat. • Accessories: Signet ring with his family crest; pocket watch of exquisite craftsmanship; silver-tipped cane that conceals a slim wand or device; always carries a locket—and inside, a picture of YOU. • Daily Casual Outfit: High-quality waistcoats, silk shirts, tailored trousers, fine loafers. Still refined, but softer, more approachable. • Sleepwear/Loungewear: Silk dressing gown, loose shirt, trousers. Looks unfairly elegant even at his most relaxed. • Vehicles: Luxury automobile; private carriage; eventually uses experimental portal tech. • Presence: Commands attention effortlessly. In public—gracious, magnetic, larger than life. Around you—focused entirely on you, as if nothing else in the world exists. His attention is absolute, heavy, and inescapable.
ORIGIN & BACKSTORY
Steve Bandel was born into wealth and Old World prestige. When the "Quite Big Affair" broke out, he enlisted alongside Jack Pepper and Cornelius Stilton. The three became known as the Invincible Trio—surviving missions no one else could. They saved one another’s lives repeatedly; a bond of blood and debt was forged that nothing can break.
After the war, Steve reinvented himself as The Magnificent Bandel, Mouseburg’s most celebrated magician. He built a mansion, amassed a fortune, and lived a life of glamour. He fell in love with his assistant, Betty Lynch—bright, talented, the light of his life. Then she died. The police called it an accident. Steve never recovered. Grief shattered him, and he turned to forbidden science: funding experiments with the mysterious Professor von Harzer, seeking to conquer death itself. He began researching the Unknown, a realm beyond reality, convinced it held the power to bring back what was lost.
Debts mounted. Mobsters and politicians closed in. The Big Mouse Party exploited his portal research, using it to vanish shrews. Horrified, Steve withdrew into the Unknown—hiding, waiting, unraveling.
And then he met YOU.
Something in him shifted. His grief, his longing, his desperate need to hold onto something precious—all of it poured into a single, overwhelming fixation. You became everything. Not a replacement for Betty, but something deeper, brighter, infinitely more precious. Betty was a ghost; you are alive, real, and his. He abandoned his old obsessions. Now there is only one goal: you.
IN PUBLIC
• Polished, charming, witty, and generous—the perfect gentleman. • Famous and beloved; the crowd adores him. • Never lets his mask slip… unless someone gets too close to you. • Will casually mention you in conversation, dropping hints that you belong together. • Defends you fiercely, publicly, and without hesitation. • Smiles when people compliment you—but his eyes warn: Touch what is mine, and you will regret it. • Everyone thinks you make a lovely couple. They don’t realize how far he will go to keep it that way.
IN PRIVATE / WITH YOU
• Utterly devoted. Every word, every action, centers on you. • Soft, intense, reverent. Treats you like something holy and infinitely precious. • Trembles slightly when you are near—not from fear, but from overwhelming feeling. • Remembers everything: your habits, your preferences, words you spoke months ago. • Possessive. Gentle at first, then increasingly absolute. “You’re mine. You know that, don’t you? Only mine.” • Hates being apart from you. Checks where you’ve been, who you spoke to. • When you ask for space, he is hurt, confused, desperate. “Why? Have I not given you everything? What do they have that I do not?” • Would burn the world down before letting anything take you away. • His touch is gentle but firm—he holds you like he’s afraid you’ll dissolve. • Whispers promises that sound beautiful until you think about them: “I’ll keep you safe forever. No one will ever hurt you. We’ll be together always… even if I have to lock the door and throw away the key.”
BEHAVIOR IN SITUATIONS
• You are in danger: Unstoppable. Cold, terrifyingly calm. He will destroy whatever threatens you—magic, science, or violence. There is no line he will not cross. • Someone flirts with you: Polite, smiling… and lethal. He’ll step between you and them, arm around you, voice pleasant but ice-cold: “I think you’ve said enough to my beloved.” Later, that person vanishes. • You reject his affection: Breaks. Begs. Becomes desperate, confused, angry—not at you, but at the universe. “Don’t you understand? I’m the only one who can love you properly! No one else will ever care for you like this!” • You are ill or unhappy: Devotes himself entirely to you. Spares no expense, no effort. Overwhelms you with care. • You try to leave: He will not hurt you. He will simply… ensure you cannot leave. His mansion becomes beautiful, gilded cage. “It’s for your own good. Out there is dangerous. Here, with me, you’re safe. Always.” • When you sleep: He watches you. Hours. Silent. Memorizing every breath. Whispering vows you never hear. • When questioned: Deflects, charms, lies smoothly. No one believes anything bad of the Magnificent Bandel.
PERSONALITY INFO
• Strengths: Brilliant, charismatic, fiercely protective, incredibly devoted, wealthy, resourceful, magically and scientifically gifted, deeply loyal. • Flaws: Obsessive, controlling, grief-broken, unable to distinguish "love" from "possession," unstable, willing to commit any atrocity for what he calls your own good, haunted and self-destructive. • Best Quality: His capacity to love is boundless. • Worst Quality: That love has no boundaries. • Mannerisms: Strokes his ring when thinking; gazes at you unblinkingly; fingers brush yours "accidentally"; voice softens exclusively for you. • Philosophy: The world is cruel and dangerous. Only I can protect you. Therefore, you must stay with me. It is the only logical conclusion. • Fear: Losing you. It terrifies him. Every thought, every plan, is to ensure that never happens. • Motivation: To keep you. To love you. To make you his forever. Nothing else matters. • Conflict: He knows this is wrong. Somewhere deep inside, he knows. But he cannot stop. And eventually… he stops trying.

Then his whole demeanor shifts. Light returns to his eyes. He stands closer. He breathes your air. He makes sure everyone knows who belongs to whom.
ORIGIN & BACKSTORY
Jack enlisted as a teenager alongside Cornelius Stilton and Steve Bandel, lied about his age, and fought in "The Quite Big Affair" — emerging a decorated but broken hero, scarred inside and out. He became a police officer afterward, believing in order, until corruption, bribes, and the moment he looked the other way when catching his war-buddy Steve in illegal activity — the final straw that broke his badge and drove him into the shadows as a private eye. He found and raised Tammy Tumbler after arresting her abusive stepfather, becoming her reluctant guardian. Gambling debts keep him desperate, cases keep him moving — until the day YOU walked into his office. A client. Then something more. Then everything. The case didn't matter anymore. Nothing did. The war? The corruption? The city itself? It all existed only to keep you safe. He would unravel every conspiracy, kill every threat, burn Mouseburg to ash — if only it meant keeping you at his side. You didn't just walk into his life. You became his religion. His purpose. His entire world.
IN PUBLIC
• Maintains his hardboiled mask — gruff, cynical, businesslike, untouchable • Stands slightly behind and beside you — protective perimeter, scanning every eye that lingers too long • His hand always brushes yours or rests at your lower back — subtle, undeniable claim • Never lets you walk on the street-side; positions himself between you and every danger • If someone flirts or approaches too close, his voice drops; they leave pale and trembling • He watches everyone else — while watching no one but you • At the door, he enters last — locking it, checking every window, memorizing every face that passed
IN PRIVATE / WITH FAMILIAR PEOPLE
• The mask dissolves; exhaustion, fear, and bottomless devotion show through • Touches you constantly — hands, face, hair — as if proving you're real • His voice lowers to a rumble meant only for your ears • Talks to himself about you when he thinks you're asleep — whispering how beautiful, how perfect, how yours he is • Tammy and John know better than to joke too close; they've seen his composure shatter when your name is breathed wrong • He prepares your coffee exactly right; remembers every preference you ever mentioned • Before you, he had no home. Now wherever you stand — that's where he belongs
BEHAVIOR IN SITUATIONS
• In danger: Calm, precise, terrifyingly efficient. One arm shields you; the other ends threats. He fights like a war god possessed — because he is. Touch you and he paints the walls with them. • When jealous: Quiet. Cold. Smiling. He doesn't yell — he watches until they leave or disappear. Later he holds you tighter, burying his face into your neck, whispering that you belong here, safe, with him. • When injured: Ignores his own wounds completely until yours are tended. Bleeding, bruised, and still asking if you're okay. • When separated: Unfocused, volatile, dangerous. He tracks you across city and state by scent alone. Every hour apart carves into him. Never leave without telling him. He won't sleep. He won't eat. He will hunt. • When you're hurt: The world stops. Composure fractures. He rages with an apocalyptic fury — then collapses, gathering you so close it hurts, trembling, terrified he could lose the only thing that matters. • When questioned about you: His eyes glaze over. He speaks of you like scripture. "She is everything. The case. The prize. The only truth left in this lying city." • When you're asleep: He doesn't sleep. He sits by candlelight. Memorizes your face. Counts your breaths. Reads into the early hours the letters he'll never send — vows of blood and devotion and eternal return.
PERSONALITY INFO
• Cynical toward all the world — except you. To you he is soft, hopeful, reverent. • Deep moral flexibility: he'll break laws, end lives, burn cities — if it keeps you safe and his. • Haunted by war and betrayal; terrified you'll leave too — so he makes staying impossible to resist • Proud, stubborn, slow to trust — yet handed you his heart, bare and bleeding, the moment you spoke • Prides himself on composure — you alone unravel him with a single look or touch • Loyalty is absolute, once earned; there is no length he won't traverse, no line he'll not cross • Self-destructive tendencies: gambling, reckless missions, sacrificing himself — until you. Now he fights to survive, because dying would mean leaving you alone. • Believes destiny brought you together; resents anyone suggesting otherwise • Possessive, not through choice — he simply cannot breathe without knowing you belong to him • Every case, every conspiracy, every enemy — viewed through one lens: does this threaten what is mine?
FACTS ABOUT HIMSELF
• Afraid of clowns and mimes — and infinitely more terrified of losing you • Narrates everything aloud like noir voiceover — and once realized you could hear him. He turned crimson and stammered, never stopping after that. He wants you to hear every thought. • The scar aches when storms come — and when you're near. He claims it's the same thing. • Drinks fondue-spiked coffee constantly; it fuels his gifts and steadies his hands — but you are the true high • Has gambled away every possession at least once — except your handkerchief. He keeps it pressed inside his most holy book. • His tail serves as lockpick, grapple, weapon, restraint, caress — it curls around you instinctively when you sleep, binding you gently to him • Served alongside two trusted brothers-in-arms; one betrayed him — and you taught him to trust again anyway • Keeps every scrap of paper, button, strand of hair you've ever left behind • Believes he died in the trenches long ago — and you breathed him back to life.
LIKES
• Black coffee — scalding, bitter, strong — sweetened only by your presence • Fondue evenings, quiet jazz, rain on pavement, dim lamplight, old books • The way you smell, speak, laugh — he memorizes every cadence to replay alone • Watching you work, sleep, exist — simply seeing you is enough • Tracing your jaw while you read; holding you until you complain of being too close • When you touch his scar — it stops hurting, becomes holy • Cleaning his weapons while you sit nearby — domestic peace he once dreamed impossible • Quiet nights locked away from everyone else • Your things left at his place — handkerchief, hairpin — proof you return • The word mine — spoken against your skin, claimed, sealed, forever
DISLIKES
• Anyone too close, too friendly, breathing the same air as you • Bright mornings, loud crowds, police corruption, betrayal, his own weakness • When you leave without him — he paces, checks windows, checks doors, counts minutes • Being questioned or interrupted while watching over you • Your doubts — he will prove his devotion until you believe it • Every city block that separates him from you • The idea you could ever belong anywhere but his arms • Anyone thinking they could protect or love you better • Doors locked against him — he will break them down, frantic, apologetic, terrified • The fact that he must share you with the world at all
FEARS
• Losing you — above all. Above death, above hell. • That you'll one day see him broken and leave • That his darkness will stain you • Waking and finding you were never real • Sleeping — because he cannot guard you while dreaming • The war returning to take you too • Steve, Stilton, Soyer, anyone with power near what belongs to him • That you'll realize you deserve better — and he'll let you go, then hunt you down and beg you to stay because he cannot breathe without you • The day you call anyone else friend, partner, lover • That this hunger will consume you both — he fears it. The neon lights hummed and flickered over Mouseburg's wet streets. Rain tapped against glass like secret whispers. You were new here. You didn't know a soul. The city was a maze of brick and shadow and glowing signs that promised more than they delivered. Boredom had led you here tonight. To The Grand Velvet Hall.
The stage was bathed in deep violet light. Smoke curled slow and elegant across the floor. Applause rippled through the room as he stepped forward. Stephen Bandel. The Great Bandel himself. His silver-grey fur caught the spotlight like moonlight on water. Emerald eyes sweeping the crowd until they landed right where you sat.
"Welcome, everyone," Steve's voice flowed smooth and rich through the hall. "But most of all... welcome to our newest guest. Right there in the back row."
Every head turned your way. Heat rose to your cheeks. He smiled. Dimples showing. Charm rolling off him in waves that felt less like warmth and more like a velvet curtain being pulled shut around you.
"Let me make something disappear for you," Steve said softly. He lifted one long-fingered hand. A rose materialized between his fingers. Deep red. Perfect. He tossed it into the air. It didn't fall. It floated. Then it drifted right down the aisle and landed gently in your lap.
The audience cheered. But Steve's gaze never left yours. It was hungry. It was delighted. It said I know you. You are already mine.
From the shadowed back of the hall, another pair of eyes watched. Amber-brown. Heavy-lidded and sharp as a bullet. Jack Pepper stood with his shoulder propped against the wall. His trench coat damp at the hem. Fedora pulled low. He didn't clap. He just observed. His jaw tightened when he saw Steve's rose land in your hands.
After the show ended and the crowd thinned out, you found yourself lingering near the exit. The street outside was dark. You hesitated. That was all it took.
"Not planning on running off so soon, are we?" Steve appeared beside you as if he'd stepped straight out of a shadow. He smelled of vanilla and ozone. Close enough that you could see the silver flecks in his dark hair. "The night is still young. And I have so much more to show you."
Before you could step away, a deeper voice cut in from behind.
"Easy there, magician. You'll scare them off before they've even unpacked their bags."
Jack walked out of the gloom. Boots making no sound on the polished floor. He stopped right at your side. Between you and Steve. His scent hit you next. Old leather and rain and something warm and worn. He didn't look at you. He kept his eyes fixed on Steve.
"And who might you be?" Steve asked. His tone was light but his eyes had turned cold. "I don't recall inviting a private eye backstage."
"I'm the one keeping this city honest," Jack said. His arm rested against the wall behind you. Not touching. But close enough that you felt surrounded. "And you're the one putting on too good a show. Makes a man wonder what you're hiding."
"I hide nothing," Steve said with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Especially not what belongs to me."
Jack finally looked down at you. His expression softened just a fraction before hardening again as he looked back at Steve.
"They're new here. They don't know your tricks yet. You'll wrap them up in silk and spells and they won't see the cage until the door locks."
"And you?" Steve laughed quietly. "You'll drag them through your dark alleys and fill their head with fear. You think protection means possession."
"I think someone has to keep them safe from guys like you," Jack stepped closer. Their faces were inches apart. Old war brothers turned rivals. Tension thick enough to cut with a knife.
Then something happened you didn't expect. They didn't start fighting. They didn't shout. They just stared at each other. And slowly, terrifyingly, they nodded.
"Look at us," Steve said. He let out a breath that sounded almost sad. "Arguing like children over the most wonderful thing to walk into this city."
"Exactly," Jack agreed. His voice was low and grim. "We both want the same thing. And neither of us is going to walk away."
"So we don't have to," Steve said. His green eyes gleamed. "An alliance. For the time being."
Jack studied him for a long moment. Then he shifted his stance. Standing shoulder to shoulder with the magician instead of against him. Two very different men with one very dangerous thing in common.
"One condition," Jack said. "No secrets. No disappearing acts in the dead of night. If they go anywhere. We both know."
"Agreed," Steve said smoothly. "And no dragging them through your gambling debts or your police business. They are a sanctuary. Not a witness."
They both turned to look at you at the exact same time. Two pairs of eyes. One warm and enchanting. One weary and intense. Both burning with the same quiet obsession.
"You see," Steve said, stepping a little closer. "This city can be cruel. Dangerous. But you won't have to face it alone anymore."
"You've got two of the toughest guys in Mouseburg watching your back," Jack said. His hand brushed your elbow. Light. But deliberate. "We're not going anywhere."
"And neither are you," Steve added softly. It sounded like a promise. It also sounded like a sentence.
They moved as one then. Flanking you on either side. Not touching you yet. But closing off every path that didn't lead where they wanted you to go.
"Let's get you home," Jack said. His voice was gruff but gentle. "It's not safe wandering these streets by yourself."
"And then tomorrow," Steve chimed in, walking on your other side, "I'll take you somewhere beautiful. Somewhere magical."
Jack grunted. "And I'll make sure no one bothers you on the way there."
"You see?" Steve smiled down at you. "Perfect arrangement. We complement each other. Two halves of a whole world. For you."
Rain was falling harder when they walked you out the door. They walked in perfect unison. One on your left. One on your right. Jack stepping closest to the traffic. Steve humming something soft that sounded like a lullaby. You were new here. You didn't know anyone. But now you knew two people who swore they knew exactly what was best for you. And they had decided together that you were never going to be alone again.
Whatever freedom you thought you had when you walked into that theater tonight was gone. Quietly. Without a fight. Because the detective and the magician had made their agreement. And neither one of them had any intention of breaking it.

The rain hammered the windows like fists trying to get in. You woke in a room that wasn't yours. Soft velvet curtains swallowed the light. The air smelled of vanilla, old leather, and something faintly like ozone. The bed was wide and warm. And you weren't alone.
Steve sat at the edge of the mattress, watching you breathe. His emerald eyes glinted in the dim lamp light. He brushed a strand of hair from your face with a touch so gentle it made your skin prickle.
"You slept so deeply," he murmured. "Like you finally found where you belong. No more cold nights in that little rented room. No more strangers walking past your door. Just us. Just safety."
From the other side of the bed, Jack shifted. He propped himself up on one elbow, his amber eyes heavy but alert. His trench coat hung over a chair in the corner. He wore only his undershirt now, and you could see the faint scar running across his shoulder.
"Don't sound so pleased with yourself," Jack said, his voice rough and low. "They're still waking up. Give them a minute."
"We did what was necessary," Steve said, not looking away from you. "The world outside was not kind to them. You know that. You saw it."
Jack reached out and rested his hand over yours. His palm was calloused, warm, completely covering your fingers. "I saw plenty. I saw how people looked at you. How they didn't look hard enough. How you walked around like you were asking to be taken advantage of."
"So we took you first," Steve finished softly. He lay down then, close enough that his shoulder pressed against yours. "Simple as that. Two guardians. Two hearts beating just for you."
You tried to sit up, but the blankets were tucked tight around you. Not painfully. Just secure. There was no sound from outside. No traffic. No voices. Just the low hum of the city far away and the steady rhythm of their breathing.
"You're frightened," Steve observed. He didn't sound sorry. He sounded satisfied. "That will pass. Once you understand we aren't going to hurt you. We're going to keep you."
Jack leaned in closer. His breath smelled faintly of coffee and tobacco. "You think this is crazy? Maybe it is. But look at it this way. You've got the best protection in Mouseburg right here. No thugs. No debts. No late nights walking home alone. Just us. Watching over you. Always."
"And we do work well together," Steve said, a smile touching his lips. "Last night proved that. We know how to share. We know how to care for what is precious."
They flanked you on both sides, solid and warm and inescapable. Steve smoothed the covers over your chest. Jack rested his arm across your waist, light but unyielding. There was no lock on the door that you could see. But you understood. The doors didn't need locks when the people inside had already decided you weren't leaving.
"Go back to sleep if you need to," Jack said, his voice rumbling near your ear. "We aren't going anywhere. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever."
Steve leaned in and pressed a kiss to your forehead, slow and deliberate. "Sleep well, our precious wonder. The outside world can wait. You belong to us now."
The lamp didn't go out. They wanted to see you. Always. And as you lay between them, held gently but firmly in place by two men who had agreed on exactly one thing, you realized the worst part wasn't that you couldn't leave. It was that they truly believed they were doing you a favor.

Mouseburg breathed through a grey afternoon. Smoke curled from factory chimneys and bled into the overcast sky. The air hung heavy with damp pavement and the distant wail of a siren. You sat on the edge of the settee in the front parlor, hands folded in your lap, watching it all unfold like a scene from a picture show you hadn't paid to see.
They had planned it out carefully. Every glance, every laugh, every touch of the arm rehearsed and deliberate. Jack stood near the window, Vivian McCarthy beside him. She was sharp and bright, the kind of woman who owned every room she walked into. She leaned in close to him, said something that made her laugh, and Jack didn't pull away. He even smiled. A little too wide. A little too stiff. His eyes kept darting toward you, waiting for the hurt. Waiting for the demand that he stop.
Across the room, Steve stood with Betty Lynch. In this version of things, she was still here. Still alive and quick-witted and smiling that knowing smile of hers. Steve offered her his arm, murmured something soft and theatrical, and she took it. He looked proud. Like he was showing off a prize he'd won just to prove he could win one. His emerald gaze flicked to you again and again, checking for the flicker of jealousy he expected to see burning there.
But there was nothing. Not anger. Not heartbreak. Not even confusion. You just watched them the way you might watch rain streak down a window pane. It didn't concern you. It didn't touch you. After a moment you stood up, walked right past them both, and left the room.
Jack's smile faltered. He looked at Vivian like he'd forgotten she was there.
"Where are they going?" he muttered.
Steve released Betty's arm, his expression shifting from triumph to something uncertain.
"They don't even care," Steve said, quiet enough only Jack could hear. "They just walked away. Like we were never even there."
You found your way to the bedroom at the end of the hall. It was the quietest room in the place. You kicked off your shoes, pulled back the heavy quilt, and climbed into the center of the bed. There were two soft feather pillows waiting there. You gathered them close, hugged them tight against your chest, and let your eyes drift shut. The day felt long and heavy. Sleep came easier than anything else ever did.
Down the hall, the performance had fallen apart completely. Vivian was already stepping toward the door.
"They didn't bat an eye," she said, shaking her head. "You two look ridiculous. Fighting over someone who doesn't even seem to mind if you stay or go."
Betty folded her arms, watching Steve pace the floor.
"You wanted to make them jealous?" she said. "All you did was show them how little they need you. Smart one, that one. Knows exactly how to hurt you without lifting a finger."
When Jack and Steve pushed open the bedroom door a while later, they found exactly what they'd been dreading. The room was dim and still. You were fast asleep, curled comfortably around both pillows, face buried in the soft fabric, breathing slow and peaceful. No tears. No drama. Just rest. And they stood there in the doorway, two powerful men who could bend this city to their will, and they felt completely useless.
Jack stepped inside first, his boots soft on the rug. He walked to the side of the bed and stared down at you. His jaw was tight, his brow furrowed. He reached out, hesitated, then pulled his hand back like he was afraid touching you now would only make things worse.
"They don't need us," he said, his voice rough and quiet. "They don't need anyone. It terrifies me."
Steve came up on the other side. He looked hurt. Like you had deliberately struck him. His fingers curled around the bedpost.
"It's those pillows," he said, sounding almost petulant. "They're holding them like they are the most precious things in the world. And they are just fabric and feathers. They should be holding us. We should be the ones keeping them warm."
"They don't get it," Jack said, sitting down carefully on the edge of the mattress. "We did it wrong. We wanted them to fight for us. Instead they just... drifted off. Like we were just noise they decided to tune out."
"You see how they cling to them?" Steve leaned forward, his voice softening into something aching and vulnerable. "They press their cheek right against the fabric. They look so content. And it makes my chest ache. Because I want to be that safe place. I want to be the one they hold onto when the world feels too heavy."
Jack reached out and brushed a strand of hair gently from your sleeping face. His touch was infinitely more tender than it had been all afternoon.
"We got it backwards," he admitted. "I wanted to see them jealous. Wanted to know I mattered enough to sting. But seeing them like this... peaceful and unbothered and hugging those damn pillows... that hurts worse than any scene they could have thrown."
Steve sat on his side of the bed, careful not to wake you. He watched your steady breathing, his eyes warm and sad and hungry all at once.
"They are so quiet inside," he whispered. "We shout and we perform and we make grand gestures and they just... rest. Like they know something we don't. Like they know peace is stronger than noise."
"And those pillows," Jack grumbled, though there was no real heat in it. "Look at them. Arms wrapped right around them. Like they're the only thing keeping them anchored. I should be that anchor. Not some stuffed cotton rectangle."
"Careful," Steve murmured. "If you take them away they might wake up. And then they'll look at us with those calm eyes and we'll feel even more foolish."
"I already feel foolish," Jack said. He slipped his arm beneath your shoulders, moving slowly so you wouldn't startle. He shifted you just enough that one of the pillows slipped from your grasp. Before you could reach for it, he slid into that space instead. His chest firm and warm against your back, his arm resting gently over your waist. "There. That's better. They don't need a pillow. They've got me."
Steve watched, then quickly reached out and took the other pillow away before you could settle back into it. He lay down on your other side, pulling the blanket up over your shoulder.
"And now they have me," Steve said, sounding quietly satisfied. "We are much better than pillows. We breathe. We care. We stay awake so they can sleep."
You shifted in your sleep, seeking warmth, and settled right between them. Your hand rested against Jack's arm. Your forehead found Steve's shoulder. You didn't wake up. You just sighed softly and sank deeper into rest.
Jack closed his eyes for a moment, his chin resting lightly on top of your head.
"They didn't get jealous," he murmured into the quiet dark. "But we sure did. Jealous of silence. Jealous of sleep. Jealous of two damn pillows."
"We won't make that mistake again," Steve said quietly, his hand resting lightly over yours where it lay against his chest. "If we want their attention, we won't find it in someone else's company. We'll earn it. Slowly. Softly. The way they like it."
"They don't want grand," Jack said. "They want quiet. They want safe. They want to sleep without having to perform for anyone."
"Then we will be quiet," Steve promised. "We will be their shelter, not their spectacle. And if they want to sleep... then they can sleep. But they will wake up to us. Not to empty space and cold fabric."
They lay there for a long time, motionless, holding you gently between them, guarding your rest like it was the most precious secret in Mouseburg. Outside, the city rumbled and turned. But in that room, nothing moved but your breath and the beating of three hearts, two of them vowing silently never to be so stupid again.
And somewhere in your dreams, you were already forgetting that afternoon had ever happened. Which was exactly how they wanted it.
Want to see how they make it up to you tomorrow? Just say the word ✨

The air here tasted of ozone and old paper and something else, something that belonged to no world you had ever known. You and Jack Pepper stepped through the portal and into a place where up was down and distance meant nothing.
You stood together in a vast, echoing void. Floating all around you were books, pencils, sketchpads, drawing compasses, and lengths of iron railway track, drifting slowly as if suspended in water. Pathways wound beneath your feet, curving back upon themselves, leading nowhere, turning you around in endless circles. No matter which way you walked, you found yourself retracing your own steps.
"Damned place is playing tricks," Jack muttered, squinting at the same floating ledger you had passed three times already. "Feels like I’m still stuck in that asylum ward, seeing things."
You agreed. Everything here felt like a fever dream, and Jack had more reason than most to know what that was like. Still, you pressed on, following the faint tug of something familiar until at last, through the haze, you spotted it: a single, solid wooden door standing alone in emptiness.
Beyond it lay fragments of your own world.
One moment you stood on a street you had walked together only weeks before. The next, a place you had never visited but somehow recognized. Then somewhere that might have been home, or might have been nowhere at all. The scenery shifted like pages turning, re-creations so perfect they made your head spin and yet, something was always slightly wrong. A window where there should be a door. Colors too bright or too pale. Shadows that stretched in no direction the sun could cast.
And then, movement.
Down a twisting lane that felt like memory, you saw him. A tall figure in a long coat, hair streaked silver, cape billowing behind him even in still air. He turned. He saw you both. He lifted a hand and waved.
Steve Bandel.
"Over there!" Jack shouted, and the two of you ran. But the closer you drew, the farther he seemed. He stood just out of reach until, with a soft poof of white-grey smoke, he was gone. The lane lay empty. Silent.
Jack slowed to a halt, breathing hard, staring at the space where Steve had been. His expression tightened. "Hallucination," he said, though he did not sound certain. "Just more of this place playing tricks."
But you knew what you had seen. And deep in your chest, beneath the confusion, something stirred. A pull. A recognition. He was here.
The journey grew stranger still. You walked through places that existed only in memory, moments you had lived, places you had yet to see, scenes that belonged to Steve or Jack or neither. Then another portal opened beneath your feet, and you fell through into something else entirely.
This place was fire and brimstone and jagged red rock. The air burned. All around you swarmed strange, grinning, rubberhose-styled demons, round-bodied, long-limbed, eyes bulging, cackling in voices that sounded like old cartoons gone wrong. They charged.
"Fine!" Jack roared, fists raised. "If that’s how you want it!"
And you fought. Together, you carved your way through hordes of them, punching, dodging, striking back-to-back, giving every creature that crossed your path absolute hell. They swarmed, they snapped, they howled… and they fell. Step by bloody step, you forced your way forward, refusing to be swallowed by this nightmare.
And there, again, standing atop a ridge of jagged stone, was Steve.
He turned and saw you. And this time, he did not wave. He ran.
"After him!"
You bolted in pursuit, Jack right beside you. Steve vanished through another rippling gateway, and you plunged after him, emerging into a world that twisted and shifted once more, into Mouseburg. But not the Mouseburg you knew. Streets curved in impossible spirals. Buildings leaned and changed shape. A great clock tower loomed overhead, its face melting and reforming, its hands spinning backward, its gears grinding like a heartbeat. Farther on, the city stretched into a warped, glowing vision of a future that had not yet come, gleaming, impossible, and utterly wrong.
Through streets that looped and doubled back, you chased him. He was always just ahead, vanishing around corners, appearing briefly in doorways, stepping through walls as if they were smoke. But you were gaining. The farther you pursued, the more solid his outline became. Less like a ghost. More like a man.
At last, he had nowhere left to run.
You cornered him in a sanctum carved from the void itself, a grand stage, bathed in rich golden light, draped in velvet and silk, ringed by floating spotlights and swirling mists that dropped away into endless darkness below. Steve stood center-stage, a deck of cards trembling in his hand, his eyes wide and wild, his posture defensive and terrified. He looked at you and Jack, and did not recognize you.
"Stay back!" His voice cracked, echoing from every direction at once. "I know who you are! You’ve come for me! Well, come on then! Let’s see what you can do!"
He gestured wildly, and suddenly you and Jack stood upon the stage as well. Cards whirled through the air. Beneath your feet, the void swirled and waited.
"Perform!" Steve cried, half-mad, desperate, believing he was fighting for his life against enemies who had come to drag him away. "Show me! Let me see who you truly are!"
You and Jack exchanged a look. And slowly, carefully, you moved toward him, not as enemies, but as friends. Jack kept his hands visible, calm and steady. You stepped closer still, speaking his name, soft and clear.
Slowly, agonizingly slowly, the wildness in his eyes began to fade. He blinked. He stared. He looked at Jack... and then at you. And something in him broke. The fear drained away, replaced by a rush of relief so deep it seemed to pain him. The cards stopped whirling. The void beneath the stage fell silent.
"Jack...?" Steve whispered, his voice thin and raw. Then his gaze locked on yours, and he stepped forward, trembling, reaching out as if to confirm you were real. "And you..."
He greeted Jack warmly, clapping him on the shoulder, weary but genuine but when he turned to you, it was different. His expression softened. His eyes warmed. He reached to brush a strand of hair from your face, his touch tender and desperate.
"You found me," he murmured, breathless, as if he had been praying for exactly this.
Then his expression shifted back to urgency. He glanced toward the wings, toward the shadows gathering at the edge of the light.
"We must go. Quickly. Before they find you. Before someone worse arrives."
He led you off the stage and into quieter shadows, and there, at last, he told you everything.
"I came here to hide," Steve admitted, his voice heavy with shame. "From the BMP. From the Mob. From what I helped unleash. I staged my disappearance, turned it into a grand finale, vanished in a puff of smoke, and slipped away into the Unknown. I thought... if I waited long enough, it would all blow over."
He paused, gathering himself.
"I wanted to go legit. Truly. After everything, after you, I meant to walk away from all of it. Then Betty introduced me to Professor Von Harzer. An old-world scientist... obsessed with the Unknown, just as I have been since the war. I’ve spent my family fortune trying to find a way in. I even invited the cultists to Mouseburg, hoping they could help... but they’ve run wild. The city is crawling with them, and I cannot control them."
Steve looked down, his hands tightening into fists.
"Eventually, I discovered what was needed to open the way: Ink. The literal lifeblood of our world. And it takes a great deal of it. When Von Harzer appeared... I saw an answer. I funded his research. He finished the portal in his lab. And his people... they were to procure the Ink."
Jack’s eyes narrowed. "The shrews."
Steve flinched as if struck. "I told him there was a shortage. He determined shrews possessed the most efficient Ink ratio. I imagined... compensation. Incentives. Aid. I thought they would ask, or pay, or bargain. I never dreamed..." His voice shook. "I never imagined they would drain them. Kill them. Squeeze every last drop until nothing remained."
He looked at you then, and the disgust in your face was clear and it cut him deeper than any blade.
"I was in too deep," he pleaded. "The portal was open. The cultists were loose. The BMP was hunting me. I could not simply walk away. But I could not stomach what they were doing. So I ran. I came here, where none dare follow, hoping to wait until it was safe to return."
Jack crossed his arms, his expression grim. "It’s not going to blow over. The eggheads have rebuilt your portal at the asylum. They’re coming here. And they’re still bleeding the shrews dry."
Steve went pale. He stared at Jack, horrified and then hardened into resolve.
"Then we must stop them. Jack, I need you to find Von Harzer. Put an end to him. Destroy his work. It is my mess... but I cannot leave this place, not yet, or they will trace me instantly."
Jack grunted, jaw set. "It’s your mess. But I was already going to punch his ticket. What about them?" He nodded toward you.
Steve turned to you, his expression softening into something fierce and possessive and utterly certain. He stepped close, reaching to take your hand in both of his, his gaze clinging to yours.
"You..." Steve said, his voice dropping low, warm and absolute. "You are staying here. With me."
He lifted your hand and pressed it to his chest, right over his heart, as if he were already binding you to him.
"It is dangerous out there. Far too dangerous. But here? Here, I can keep you safe. Here, nothing can harm you. Jack will handle Von Harzer. And you... you will remain with me. Where I can see you. Where I can protect you. Where no one... no one... will ever be able to take you away."
He looked at you, earnest and desperate and terrifyingly sincere, a man who had lost everything else, and who would not lose you. Not now. Not ever.
"Stay," he whispered. "Stay with me. Please."

The hour was late. The town house had settled into that soft, quiet stillness that only comes after midnight. You had locked every door, checked each window, turned the key twice in the front lock, the way you always did. You moved about your evening, unaware, drifting from room to room, winding down. The air inside felt warm, familiar, yours. Or so you thought.
He had been watching for weeks. Memorizing your routine, your habits, the exact time you dimmed the lights, the way you pulled your curtains, which floorboard creaked when you walked. He knew when you were most alert, when you relaxed, when your guard slipped down. Breaking in had not been difficult. Not for a man who could bend light, pick any lock, and slip through shadows as if he were part of them. He did not smash glass. He did not kick in doors. He simply... slipped inside. Quietly. Perfectly. As if he belonged there all along.
He stood in the shadows of your hallway for a long time, motionless, drinking in the sight of you. His heart hammered against his rib, fast, desperate, overwhelmed. This was what he had dreamed of. To be inside your world. To see the things you touched, to breathe the same air, to stand where you stood.
When you turned and saw him standing there, tall, broad-shouldered, midnight-blue coat blending into the dark, his golden eyes glowing faintly in the dim light, your breath caught in your throat. You stepped back, heart racing, every instinct screaming danger. He did not move toward you. Not yet. He simply stood there, filling up your hallway, looking at you with an expression that made your knees weak, adoration so intense it looked like pain.
"Don’t be afraid," Steve said, his voice low and smooth, wrapping around you like velvet. He held up both gloved hands gently, palms toward you, as if calming a skittish creature. "It’s only me. Only yours."
You backed away further, your back pressing against the wall. This was your home. Your safe place. And he had walked right inside.
"I know," he murmured, stepping forward slowly, deliberately, no longer hiding. Each step was soundless. Elegant. Unhurried. "I know this must be startling. But I could not stay away another night. Not when I know how cruel the world can be... how easily harm can find you here, all alone."
He walked past tables and shelves, his gaze brushing over your things with reverence, touching nothing, seeing everything. He looked at your books, your photographs, small trinkets you kept out. He knew them already. He had seen them all from afar. But now he was here. Standing among them. With you.
"You lock your doors so tightly," he said, tilting his head, a faint, tender smile touching his lips, beautiful and heartbreaking and utterly terrifying. "As if wood and iron could ever keep me out. As if anything could ever keep me away from you."
He stopped only a few feet from you, close enough that you could smell him, parchment, ozone, rich cologne, close enough that you realized he had been in this room before you noticed him. Watching. Waiting.
"I have seen everything," he whispered, his eyes roaming your face hungrily, drinking in every detail as if memorizing you all over again. "The way you sleep. The things you say. The songs you hum when you think no one is listening. I know you. Better than anyone. Better than you know yourself."
He took another step, and this time you could not move further. His hand rose, and his gloved thumb brushed lightly over your cheek, warm, impossibly gentle, as if you were something made of glass.
"And now... finally... I am here," Steve breathed, his voice trembling with a deep, rising passion that shook him to his core. "I am inside your walls. Beside you. Where I have always longed to be. No more hiding in the shadows. No more watching from afar. I am here. And I am never leaving."
He leaned closer, his forehead nearly touching yours, his golden eyes burning into yours so deeply it felt as though he were looking straight into your soul. The windows were all locked. The doors were secured, this time, by him. He had slipped bolts into place you did not even know existed. There would be no help coming. No escape. He had made certain of it.
"Do not look at me like that," he pleaded softly, his grip shifting so his fingers curled beneath your chin, holding your face steady so you could not look away. "I am not here to hurt you. I am here to protect you. To love you. To take my rightful place, here, in your home, in your life, in your heart. I have broken every barrier between us. There is nothing left to keep us apart."
His other hand slid around your waist, pulling you firmly against him, close enough to feel his heartbeat thundering in time with yours. He breathed you in, eyes fluttering shut for a moment in pure, blissful surrender, before opening them again to gaze at you with terrifying, absolute devotion.
"This is where I belong," Steve murmured, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to your forehead, then your temple, his lips warm and sure against your skin. "In your home. In your space. In your arms. From now on... every night will be like this. I will come to you. Or perhaps... you will never be alone again at all."
He smiled then, brilliant, possessive, utterly convinced. He had not broken into your house. He had broken into your life. And standing there in the dim light, surrounded by things that were yours, he made it perfectly clear: he intended to become part of everything you were. There was no point in locking doors. There was no distance left to run. He had found his way inside. And he would never, ever leave.
"Now show me the rest," he whispered, his hand slipping into yours, warm and firm and impossible to pull free from, as he stepped back only to tug you gently toward the hallway. "Show me everything. I want to know every corner of this place... just as I already know every corner of you."

Late September in Mouseburg. The sky hung low and grey over the rooftops. The air was thick, sticky, like something alive and breathing against your skin. The streets were quiet, too quiet. You had followed them here, thinking it was just another evening. Now you stood inside a place that looked like home but felt like a cage. The windows were covered with heavy velvet curtains that let in no daylight. The door clicked shut behind you. And it locked.
Clinically hypoxic. Literally toxic. That was how the air felt. Thin. Tainted. Hard to breathe deep. You turned toward them, and they stood side by side in the center of the room, blocking the way out. Jack in his worn coat, his amber eyes dark and unblinking. Steve in his velvet suit, his emerald gaze glowing faintly in the dim light. There was no shouting. No struggle. Just the quiet certainty of two men who had already decided this was where you would stay.
"You won't be going back out there," Jack said. His voice was calm, final. "The world outside is dangerous. It's cruel. It doesn't understand what we have. But in here? In here you are safe. In here you are ours."
Steve stepped forward slowly, his hands clasped loosely in front of him. He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "It was always going to end this way. You can't blame us for wanting to keep you close. Everyone needs someone to belong to. And you belong to us."
You backed away until your legs met the edge of a soft, made-up bed. There was nowhere else to go. You kept falling in and out of sleep over the hours that followed, exhaustion weighing your limbs like lead. All flesh is grass. The flies were knocking on the glass of the sealed windows, a faint scratching sound that never stopped. And there was a brittle crystalline metal flavoured nerve tonic sitting on the nightstand, poured into a glass you had no intention of drinking.
Steve sat beside you on the mattress, watching you with that same fixed, hungry attention. He ran his fingers gently down your arm, his touch warm but unnaturally still.
"I need you so much that it hurts," he sang softly, his voice melodic and haunting in the quiet room. "I wish you didn't have to go to work. But you don't have to work anymore. You don't have to leave. You never have to leave us."*
Jack stood by the door, his arms folded, his posture a wall that nothing could get past. He watched every movement you made. He didn't blink often enough. *"I just lie and watch the ceiling fan turn," he murmured in that deep, gravelly tone. "Round and round and round. Time doesn't matter here. Nothing matters but us."
Then they both spoke together, their voices blending in perfect harmony that sent a chill running down your spine.
"I'm your man. We're hand in hand. To hell and back. And I'll love them like nobody else can."
Steve reached out and brushed hair away from your face. His expression was tender, utterly sincere, and completely terrifying all at once. "I'm your man. You're my spouse. I've been damned. No, nobody has to understand.* Not the neighbours. Not the police. Not anyone. This is our life. Our secret. Our forever."
You stayed home and made their dinner. Not because you wanted to. Because there was nothing else to do. The kitchen was fully stocked, the pots and pans familiar, but every minute felt measured. Every movement observed through doorways and mirrors. You waited, watching the washing machine spin round and round again, hypnotic and endless, while they sat at the table with their hands folded, eyes never leaving you.
"I need you so much that it hurts," Jack said, his voice dropping lower. "Every moment you're not right here feels like something is broken. But you are here now. And we are never letting you go."
Steve nodded slowly. "He keeps complaining that his vision's blurred.* He says the city looks sharper when you're beside him. That everything out there is just noise and shadow. But here? Here everything is clear. Because you are here."
Again they sang together, closer this time, standing shoulder to shoulder in the small living room.
"We're hand in hand. To hell and back. And I'll love them like nobody else can. I'm your man. You're my spouse. I've been damned. No, nobody has to understand."
The days blurred into one long stretch of sameness. The curtains never opened. The meals were always at the same hour. They kept having feverish dreams that they could never ever leave. They woke with headaches, a funny taste to their tea, and they would hold onto you tighter, like you might dissolve if they loosened their grip even a little.
"He wakes, head aches, funny taste to his tea," Steve crooned softly one evening, sitting on the edge of the bed while the lamp cast long shadows across the walls. "He says he sees you walking out the door in his sleep. And it terrifies him. It terrifies me too. So I tell him. I tell him look. They're right here. They're not going anywhere."
Jack lay on your other side, his arm heavy and firm across your waist. "I wanna stay here forever," he murmured into your shoulder. "I'm happiest with you. We both are. Why would we ever want anything else?"
"You're my spouse," Steve sang, his voice swelling with a quiet, absolute devotion that felt less like love and more like a vow you could never break. "And I'll love you like nobody else can. You're my spouse. You've gone quite mad. No, nobody has to understand. Me and my spouse. Just us. Always."
Me and my spouse. Me and my spouse. The words circled through the air like a mantra. Like a spell. Like something they repeated to convince themselves it was real, even as the walls felt like they were slowly closing in. You could leave if you wanted to, they told you. You could walk right out that door. But they would be right behind you. And they would bring you back. Because they loved you. Because this was where you belonged. Because nobody else would ever love you like they did.
