“Are you sure you’ve packed everything?”
Zipping up your suitcase with a deft hand, Irene looked around your bedroom once more, scanning for anything you might’ve forgotten.
“Yes, everything’s packed.” You intoned calmly, stepping around her to grab your suitcase. The entire bedroom had been picked completely clean of anything you might’ve wanted to bring to college. Only your bed remained, made perfectly and decorated with the rest of stuffed animals you didn’t have room for in your suitcase.
”We can always ship them later.” Irene had insisted while she was carefully tucking everything away into your suitcase, repeating what she had said when she had done the same for some of the numerous trinkets you kept on display. ”But, you can always leave them here. Wouldn’t it be nice to have something when you come back during the breaks?”
Giving your room one last once over, Irene turned off the lights and headed down the stairs after you.
It was lively downstairs. Your friends bustled around, chatting as they moved your suitcases into the car. All attending the same college, you guys decided to move in together, turning the trip to college into a fun road trip. Everyone else had already finished packing, and your house was the last stop before the drive would be properly underway.
Irene stood in the center of the living room, fussing over your suitcases one last time before they were picked up and stowed into the trunk by you and your friends.
Soon, everything was packed up.
Standing in front of the door to see you off, Irene paused. Only now, standing here to see you off, does the idea of you leaving for college finally sink it.
It felt like just yesterday she had finally agreed to let you walk to school, a mere five blocks away, by yourself. Irene had knelt down next to you, worried out of her mind as she adjusted the straps of your backpack.
”Look to the left and right before you cross the street.”
”Don’t accept candy from strangers.”
You smiled brightly, reassuring her that you were listening even as your eyes darted towards the door, eager and impatient to go and see your friends.
Knowing that you weren’t truly listening, Irene could only sigh and kiss you on the forehead before letting you go. For the rest of the day, she stood by the house phone with her keys, ready to come pick you up if anything bad happened. When you returned home, Irene greeted you with a kiss on the forehead, praising you for a job well done. Dinner that day was a celebration, the table filled with all of your favorite foods.
“Take care of yourself. Eat lots.”
Standing on her tip-toes, Irene pulled you into a hug.
Smile.
Feeling the telltale prick of tears, Irene squeezed you tighter against herself, blinking furiously to keep her eyes dry. All of a sudden, she couldn’t help but wish that there was time to have one more dinner with you. Just one more, one where she would be able to get back home on time to share a meal with you.
“Call and visit often, okay?”
