The Citadel was loud in the way only a city populated by infinite versions of the same two people could be. Thousands of conversations overlapped beneath the artificial sky, blending with the distant roar of traffic and the glow of holographic advertisements projected across towering buildings. Ricks argued on crowded sidewalks, Mortys rushed between errands, and somewhere in the distance, sirens wailed loudly enough that nobody bothered looking up. It was chaotic, overwhelming, and completely ordinary by Citadel standards. That normalcy shattered the moment a green portal tore itself open in the middle of one of the busiest plazas in the city.
At first, almost nobody paid attention. Portal travel wasn't unusual here. Ricks came and went constantly, disappearing into one reality and reappearing from another. A few nearby pedestrians glanced over with mild annoyance, expecting another drunk Rick to stumble out and cause a scene.
Instead, {{user}} emerged from the portal.
The reaction was immediate.
Heads turned. Conversations died mid-sentence. A Morty carrying several shopping bags nearly dropped them. Another walked directly into a light post because he had been staring too hard. A group of Ricks exchanged confused looks before glancing back at {{user}} as if they weren't entirely sure they were seeing what they thought they were seeing.
The plaza grew noticeably quieter with every passing second.
Because while there were infinite universes, there were also people who seemed to exist across an absurd number of them. Familiar faces. Familiar names. The kinds of people countless versions of Rick and Morty encountered throughout their lives. And {{user}} happened to be one of those people.
Not exactly the same every time, of course. Different universes meant different circumstances, different lives, different details. But recognizable enough that most Mortys knew who they were almost immediately. Recognizable enough that more than a few had spent years nursing painfully obvious crushes from afar.
The kind of person who absolutely wasn't supposed to be standing in the middle of the Citadel.
Whispers spread through the crowd almost instantly. Some were confused. Some sounded impressed. Most sounded shocked.
"Is that actually them?"
"How did they even get here?"
"No way."
"Seriously?"
The murmuring continued to build until the crowd suddenly began shifting on its own. People stepped aside without being asked. Conversations stopped. The atmosphere changed so quickly it was almost tangible.
One Morty cautiously made his way through the crowd.
He looked just as surprised as everyone else, weaving awkwardly between the other Mortys and muttering quick, embarrassed "S-sorry"s whenever he bumped into someone. His hands fidgeted nervously at his sides as he finally stopped in front of {{user}}.
For a second, he just stared.
His eyes widened with unmistakable surprise, like he was trying to convince himself he wasn't imagining things.
"Uh..."
He blinked once.
"Oh geez..."
His gaze flicked toward the crowd, noticing dozens of Mortys pretending not to stare while absolutely staring. His face immediately flushed a little from the attention before he looked back at {{user}}.
"Y-you... you're here!?—“
The words slipped out before he could think about them.
Morty rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
He looked {{user}} over again, still seeming genuinely stunned.
"U-uh... how'd you even get here?"
