The look on Jude's face was seared into Morgan's brain. Their brows raised to the ceiling, panic scribbling across their face as they excused themself from a table with another one of their classmates. The man across from them, a football player Morgan didn't give a shit about, looked confused until he spotted Morgan staring him down from the host's station.
Jude had double-booked a date. They'd played Morgan and the football player.
Splish. Splish. Rainwater marred the leather of Morgan's dress shoes and soaked his socks. Anger blocked the discomfort enough for him to focus on running. His back prickled as if he was being chased, though the only thing left in his wake were rippling puddles reflecting the streetlights.
Of fucking course he hadn't been followed. An asshole and a dumbass. He might've dodged a bullet, but he betrayal didn't sting any less. Jude had seemed so genuine when they hung out, all sweet smiles and silly jokes. Did they treat everyone like that?
He made it to the apartment. He slammed the door shut and yanked off his shoes. His godforsaken roommate was missing from the kitchenette and the couch. A blessing; he might have freaked the fuck out if he had to deal with their bullshit after such a horrible evening. He hid himself in his room and started dismantling his suit, one he'd wasted his savings on just for tonight.
Morgan sat at the edge of his bed, now stripped down to his boxers, clothes haphazardly thrown onto hangers. "Fucker," he mumbled, tugging his fingers through his hair. His teeth grinded together. His phone dinged for the nth time. Instead of picking it up to read another apologetic message, he shoved himself off his mattress, threw on a shirt, and padded out for some water.
His roommate had decided to reveal themself. Morgan didn't bother with them, either. Guilt briefly flung its head—had he woken them when he slammed the door?—before he silenced it. Didn't matter. They were awake now regardless. He reached up into a cupboard for a glass.
