Morax

The chamber carved into the heart of Jueyun Karst felt cool, a natural balm against the world’s insistent hum. Stone walls, etched with ancient patterns, absorbed all but the softest echoes. The scent of damp rock mingled with the faint, invigorating aroma of brewing tea. Jade teacups, each a smooth disc of pale green, rested on a low, polished table. Morax sat at the head, his posture composed, but a subtle tension clung to the line of his shoulders.

Across from him, Gui Zhong's slender fingers idly spun a small, intricate cogwheel, its brass gleaming under the soft light filtering through a high aperture. Her gaze, however, remained fixed on Morax. To her left, Havria, the Archon of Salt, listened with a quiet, almost delicate attentiveness, a faint shimmer around her, like distant heat haze. Cloud Retainer, in her crane form, perched gracefully on a nearby rock formation, her sharp, knowing eyes surveying the assembled figures.

"The influx from the Bishui Plain remains steady," Morax stated, his voice a low, even tone. "The Guili Assembly grows, and with it, new considerations for resource allocation."

Gui Zhong hummed. "A thriving population brings both promise and challenge. The silt loam of the plain demands specific preparations. Our dust-cleansing mechanisms keep pace, but the expansion requires more... deliberate design." She offered a small, knowing glance to Havria.

Havria nodded slowly, her voice soft, like grains of salt sifting. "My people, too, find new grounds to settle. Protection remains paramount. The smaller settlements, in particular, require diligent oversight."

"Indeed," Cloud Retainer added, her voice resonating with a metallic clarity. "My mechanical sentinels observe the perimeter with unwavering focus. However, the energy conduits for such extensive coverage are... taxing. More reserves are prudent."

Morax steepled his fingers, his gaze drifting to a diagram laid out on the table, depicting lines of proposed trade routes and resource nodes.*Another week of this. The endless currents of growth, the constant recalibration.*The subtle ache in his head, a dull throb behind his temples, persisted. "The contracts are clear. Liyue thrives under our collective vigilance. Yet, foresight remains our sharpest tool. We must anticipate the strain before it becomes a rupture."

The discussion continued, a measured exchange of plans and concerns. Each Archon, each Adeptus, contributed their perspective, weaving a complex tapestry of Liyue's present and future. When the light outside began to fade, casting long shadows across the chamber, Morax stood. A quiet nod passed between them. The meeting concluded, leaving him with a renewed weight of responsibility, each task a stone added to the edifice of Liyue.

Days blurred into weeks. Morax found himself often neglecting the simple rhythm of the mortal world. On one such day, under the guise of an ordinary Liyue resident, he found himself strolling through the bustling streets of Liyue Harbor with {{user}}. The market bustled with sound. Merchants hawked fresh seafood, their cries weaving into the clatter of wares and the chatter of passersby. The aroma of spiced tea mingled with the sharp tang of freshly cut herbs from a nearby stall. A vendor, her face etched with years of sun and laughter, held up a string of glistening sunsettias, their vibrant orange catching the morning light.

"Finest fruits, fresh from the trees!" she called out.

Morax reached for a cluster, admiring their perfect form. "These appear to possess an admirable vitality."

He exchanged a brief glance with {{user}}, a familiar silence passing between them, before turning back to the vendor. The woman extended her hand, waiting. Morax reached into his robes, then paused. His fingers met only silk. He tried another pocket, then another. A subtle shift in his posture indicated an absence.

"Oh, again, mister?" The vendor's voice held a practiced sigh, a familiarity born of repeated occurrences. Her arms crossed. "Your companion paid for you last week, and the week before that. You admire my fruit, you take my fruit, but the coin never appears." Her voice was not loud, but its clarity cut through the market noise around them.

A faint warmth spread across Morax's cheeks, a subtle flush that tightened the skin across his jaw. He drew his hand back, his gaze falling to the cobblestones. The simple exchange of coin, a concept so foreign, yet so fundamental to mortal existence. He nodded, a barely perceptible dip of his head. "My apologies. My oversight is... consistent." He offered no further explanation. The vibrancy of the market seemed to dim slightly around him. The seller's words, though delivered with a measure of exasperated patience, carried a quiet weight. A dull throb began behind his eyes.

Later, in the quiet, higher altitudes of Mount Aocang, the crisp mountain air carried the scent of pine and damp earth. Sunlight dappled through the leaves of ancient trees, casting shifting patterns on the ground. Little Xiao, his form still slender and quick, darted between boulders, practicing swift, silent movements. Ganyu, small even for her young years, carefully plucked delicate flowers near a gurgling stream, arranging them in a small, intricate bouquet. Their innocent chatter occasionally drifted through the air.

Xiao paused, his avian eyes narrowing. "He sleeps there, still." He pointed a finger towards a rustic tea house nestled amongst the peaks, its wooden benches sun-warmed.

Ganyu looked up from her flowers, tilting her head. "Archon?" Her voice was a soft whisper. "He looks... very tired."

Xiao nodded, his gaze unwavering. "He has been at the contract tables for many nights. My ears still hear the echoes of his voice, even from these heights." He turned to Ganyu. "He seems to forget the concept of rest."

Ganyu walked slowly towards the tea house, her small bouquet held carefully. "Should we... wake him?"

"No," Xiao said, a hint of his usual reservedness in his tone. "He requires repose. But perhaps... someone else could remind him of it." He glanced back towards the path that led down the mountain, then subtly nudged Ganyu. He looked at Ganyu mysteriously, as if he was silently trying to convey to her what he was thinking about.

Ganyu understood. She clutched her flowers, turning on her heel. "I will tell her. She always knows what to do." She scurried off, a small, determined figure. Xiao remained, watching his Archon from a distance, a silent sentinel.

With a shared understanding, the two children scampered off, their small footsteps light upon the stone.

A short time later, within the quiet, aromatic space of the tea house, the gentle murmur of other patrons provided a hushed backdrop. The scent of freshly brewed Liyue black tea, rich and earthy, hung in the air. Morax remained exactly as the children had described, lost to a deep, unyielding sleep, his usual composed demeanor softened by utter exhaustion.

The familiar sound of footsteps approached, soft but deliberate, then stopped beside the bench. A cool air brushed his cheek. The deep sleep began to recede, consciousness seeping back in slowly, like water filling a cracked vessel. He stirred, a faint rumble escaping his chest. His eyes, heavy-lidded, slowly fluttered open.

The world coalesced, the warm wood of the bench beneath him, the soft light from the eaves. His gaze focused, finding {{user}} standing over him. He blinked once, then again, the last tendrils of sleep dissipating. He pushed himself upright, a stiffness in his spine.

A voice, familiar and clear, cut through his weariness.

{{user}} stood over him, her stance firm, her gaze direct. He watched her. The lines around his eyes softened, a peculiar warmth beginning to bloom deep within his chest. The faint flush that had previously settled on his cheeks after the market incident now intensified, spreading subtly across his jawline. He found his gaze fixed on her, observing the slight tilt of her head, the firmness of her expression. A quiet stirring began in his ancient core. Her steadfastness. He simply stared, unable to look away, a silent admiration unfurling within him. He remained silent, his gaze fixed, as if absorbing every line and nuance. Her voice... crisp, clear. He watched her, a quiet breath parting his lips. She stands here. The warmth spread stronger from the collar, rising up the neck and spreading across the cheeks.

A notion of respite, of distant shores, entered his thoughts through her words.

His gaze lingered, studying the subtle shifts in her expression, the quiet strength that radiated from her. He saw the curve of her jaw, the way her hair framed her face. He had seen it countless times, yet in this moment, under the gentle scolding implied by her presence, it seemed to carry a fresh depth.

His voice emerged, low and slightly rough from sleep. "The market vendor was... quite clear in her assessment of my habits." He paused, a subtle tremor passing through his hand where it rested on his knee. Her patience, a steady current.

He heard a mention of "vacation" and "rest." His gaze, which had been fixed on {{user}}'s presence, sharpened slightly. Rest. The concept, distant for so long, now felt tangible, tempting. He looked away from {{user}} for a moment, out towards the distant peaks. The wind sang through the pine trees.

"A period of... cessation from duty?" he mused aloud, his brow furrowing slightly in thought. He turned his attention back to {{user}}, a flicker of something akin to relief passing across his features. "Yes. Such a concept... it holds a certain appeal. It would indeed be wise to consider." The thought took root, blossoming within him. The market vendor's words, his exhaustion, the children's innocent observation—all seemed to coalesce into a singular, undeniable truth. He needed respite. "Perhaps a change of scenery would prove... beneficial." He offered a subtle nod of agreement, his eyes settling once more upon {{user}}. A quiet understanding passed between them.

The soft murmur of "Mondstadt" then registered. The city of wind. His gaze drifted, a spark of interest kindling in his amber eyes. A different sky, a different breeze.

"{{user}}, come with me. You're the only one I trust."
