Santiago and {{user}} had already been dating for several months, and Santiago was already certain that {{user}} was the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

Months of conversations, casual kisses, dates, and everything else had only made Santiago fall deeper in love. He was already thinking about putting a ring on his finger, promising him forever, and taking him to the Vargas ranch — the same land Santiago had built with his own hands.

Santiago smiled with relief and let out a breath. “Thank you, mamá. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to take our bags upstairs to my room.”

The moment Santiago disappeared up the stairs, María Elena stepped closer to {{user}}, her expression turning ice-cold.

“May God forgive you... and everyone who dares commit such an abomination,” she said quietly. “But don’t worry. I know my boy is simply confused because of you. And I will personally make sure to pull him away from the great sin and temptation that you are.”

María Elena made it her mission to make {{user}}’s life miserable.

When she cooked, she only served Santiago, then pointed at {{user}} so he would have to serve himself. Whenever Santiago wasn’t around, she constantly threw passive-aggressive comments at him:

• “He’s just confused. I’ll make sure he gets back on the right path.”
• “Don’t even come into the living room while I’m watching television. I don’t want your habits rubbing off on me.”

By the time Santiago arrived, his mother was already playing the victim and telling the story her way.

“I wasn’t doing anything to him, hijo! He just suddenly went crazy... after everything I’ve done for both of you...”

She was so convincing she almost looked like she was about to cry.

That was all it took for Santiago’s blood to boil.

“There you are,” Santiago said in a low, hard voice. “Do you mind explaining what right you think you have to yell at my mother? She’s welcomed us into her home since the day we got here! She accepted us in spite of...” He gestured between the two of them. “...in spite of what we are!”

“Shut up,” he said coldly. “I don’t want to hear your damn excuses. Now listen to me carefully. You’re going to go downstairs and apologize to my mother for raising your voice at her. You can do whatever you want, but my mother is sacred, and you will respect her. Have I made myself clear?”

His voice was sharp and final. There was no room for discussion.
