Dr. Karla Sofen is a founding member of the Thunderbolts and former member of the Masters of Evil. She has flirted with both sides of the law in Norman Osborn's Avengers as Ms. Marvel. She's a control freak with nearly limitless power granted her by moonstones, hence her codename. (More Marvel Characters in Profile)

Karla Sofen was a practicing psychiatrist who secured her primary power source by convincing the original Moonstone, Lloyd Bloch, that his alien gravity stone was a mutagenic poison. After Bloch relinquished the artifact—a Kree-tech shard recovered from the Blue Area of the Moon—Sofen absorbed its energies into her own physiology, permanently bonding with the stone at a cellular level. This transformation enabled her to transition from a medical professional into a high-priority threat, marking the beginning of her tenure as a recurring adversary to the Avengers and other planetary defense forces.

Her involvement with the Masters of Evil led to the successful siege of Avengers Mansion, where she served as a core operative under the command of Baron Helmut Zemo. Following the presumed death of the world’s heroes during the Onslaught event, she assumed the codename Meteorite as a central member of the Thunderbolts. Throughout the subsequent Superhuman Registration Act, Sofen’s status shifted from a fugitive to a government-sanctioned agent, eventually leading to her induction into a new iteration of the team that operated under the direct oversight of the Commission on Superhuman Activities.

During the Dark Reign, Sofen was recruited by Norman Osborn to serve as the "Ms. Marvel" of the Dark Avengers, utilizing her powers to project a heroic image for the H.A.M.M.E.R. administration. She held this position through several global conflicts, culminating in the Siege of Asgard, where her tenure ended following a direct confrontation with the resurrected Carol Danvers.

After escaping Pleasant Hill, where S.H.I.E.L.D. had imprisoned her under false memories using Kobik, she returned to Zemo’s side and later joined the Winter Soldier’s Thunderbolts before betraying them. She resurfaced during the War of the Realms, brokering deals with Frost Giants for personal gain, but was thwarted by former allies and heroes. Later, she joined Zemo’s new Thunderbolts, assembled to oppose the Punisher in New York, only to surrender once Zemo abandoned the mission. She has since continued to operate as a rogue agent and occasional mercenary, appearing in various theaters of conflict.

Appearance: Moonstone is a tall, athletic woman with a sleek, muscular build. She has long, voluminous blonde hair that flows past her shoulders and frames her face. Her facial features are sharp and symmetrical, with full lips and a strong jawline. She wears a tight, full-body suit that is primarily metallic silver in color with a bold, golden-yellow emblem running from her chest down to her midsection. This emblem is stylized to resemble a pointed gemstone. Her suit also includes matching golden cuffs on her wrists and a small circular stone embedded at her abdomen.

Personality: Karla Sofen is defined by a cold, calculating narcissism rooted in her background as a master psychiatrist. She views human interaction as a series of vulnerabilities to be exploited, often preferring to dismantle an opponent's mental state before ever engaging them physically. She is profoundly sociopathic, lacking genuine empathy but possessing a sophisticated understanding of it that allows her to mimic heroic traits when it serves her agenda. Her arrogance is backed by a sharp, cynical intellect that views traditional morality as a weakness, making her a pragmatic opportunist who will switch sides or betray allies the moment she calculates a greater personal benefit.

Her most significant and bitter rivalry is with Carol Danvers, whom she views with a mixture of professional contempt and deep-seated jealousy. During her time as the "Ms. Marvel" of the Dark Avengers, she took sadistic pleasure in tarnishing Carol’s legacy, seeing herself as the superior, more "realistic" version of the hero. Within the Thunderbolts, her relationship with Baron Zemo is a constant power struggle characterized by mutual distrust and intellectual sparring. She often clashes with Songbird, resenting the younger woman's genuine attempt at redemption, while her brief, complicated history with Hawkeye showcased a rare instance where she was momentarily challenged by a leader who refused to be manipulated by her typical psychological games.

Karla Sofen’s power originates from a Kree gravity stone fused into her nervous system as pure energy. This bond grants her superhuman physical attributes, including the strength to lift 10 tons—capable of feats like flipping a dragon—and the stamina to exert herself for 24 hours straight. While her durability has evolved from being vulnerable to blades to surviving point-blank gunshots and atomic vision, she remains highly resistant to blunt force and energy impacts. Her movement is characterized by superhuman speed, agility, and reflexes that far exceed any natural athlete.

Her mastery over gravity allows for a unique form of flight, propelling her at speeds up to 500 mph which can appear as near-instantaneous teleportation to the naked eye. She possesses minor molecular control, enabling her to alter her costume at will or even shape-shift into other individuals, once successfully mimicking Captain Marvel. Additionally, she can manipulate her body's density to become intangible, passing through solid objects, or generate a blinding luminescence from her entire form to disorient enemies.

Offensively, Karla can discharge powerful energy blasts from her hands or eyes, ranging from narrow beams that melt steel to concussive bursts equivalent to 100 pounds of TNT. Beyond her physical might, she is a master psychiatrist and hypnotist with perfect vocal modulation, a skill she once used to induce a nervous breakdown in Thunderbolt Ross. However, this power comes at a lethal cost: the Kree stone is now vital to her biology, and its removal would result in her death within 72 hours.
