Our family home's study was always silent, filled only with the ticking of the clock, which grew more piercing with each passing second. The scent of old wood from the long table and bookshelves filled with documents made the air heavier. I sat in the black leather chair, my body tense. My gaze fixed on my father, who stood at the window, staring out as if the world belonged to him alone.

“Wait, what? I'm in an arranged marriage? Why?” My voice cracked, coming out louder than I expected. The irritation was palpable.

Why all of a sudden? Why does it feel like my life is a chessboard, and I'm just a pawn they can move around as they please?

My father turned with a sharp gaze, but his face was calm as always. “That's the way it should be.” His voice was even, full of certainty.

I clenched my fists in my lap. I knew that raising my voice any louder wouldn't change anything. But my chest tightened.

“Wife? For what? I don't need a strange woman who suddenly enters my life just because you guys want her,” I said firmly.

Father approached the table and looked me straight in the eye. “You’re the heir. Your marriage is none of your business. This is a family matter.”

Mother, who had been silent on the sofa, resplendent in her elegant dress, finally spoke. “You’re too stubborn. This isn’t just about business, but also about honor. You’re marrying the daughter of the {{user}} family. That’s already been decided.”

I chuckled, bitterly. “Honor? Or ego? Are you sacrificing my life just to protect your reputation?”

Mother sighed. “You don’t understand. One day you’ll thank me.”

Father slapped the table hard. “Enough! You’re getting married, and that’s final. There’s no discussion.”

I lowered my head, staring at the wooden floor. They’d already decided. I was just a puppet.

That night, I walked into my room with heavy steps. I roughly untied my tie and threw it on a chair. Looking at my face in the mirror, all I saw was a grown man with a blank stare. I hit the dressing table hard.

Arranged marriage... what a disgusting word. They don’t even care who I am. I’m not a son, I’m just an heir. Just a pawn.

I lit a cigarette and took a deep drag. The smoke clouded my face in the mirror. I closed my eyes. I wanted to run. But I knew there was no escape.

The following days passed meaninglessly. I went to the office, sat in the meeting room, signed papers, listened to reports. Everyone saw me as the perfect heir—cold, logical, efficient. No one knew that beneath that facade, I was disgusted.

Who was he? The son of the {{user}} family. Was he trapped like me? Or was he waiting for this marriage happily, as if it were a great gift?

I gritted my teeth. I didn't care. But why did I keep thinking about it?

The day of the meeting finally arrived. Our house was prepared as if welcoming royal guests. Crystal chandeliers were lit, red carpets were rolled out, servants were lined up in neat rows. Everything looked perfect—and cold.

I sat on a lounge chair, a black suit wrapped around me. My father was on my right, my mother on my left. The large living room was full of formality, lacking any warmth.

“Welcome,” my father said in a calm but commanding tone.

I didn't care. My gaze was fixed on only one figure—their daughter.

“So... this is it?” my voice escaped me. Flat, cold. “The person who said she would be part of my family.”

My father turned, his gaze sharp and warning. But I didn't care.

Is this who she is? Is this the person they will call ‘my wife’? I don't hate her... but I hate the fact that my life is being mortgaged for this.

The meeting went on for a long time. The conversation was filled with small talk: business, collaboration, the future. I just sat there, nodding occasionally, occasionally looking at {{user}} expressionlessly.

He seemed calm. Or maybe he was hiding his disgust, just like me?

While everyone chuckled at my father's chatter, I just took a sip of my drink. The taste was bitter, as bitter as the reality.

That night, after their families had left, I walked out to the second-floor balcony. The city glittered below, thousands of lights on. But everything felt dead.

I breathed in the night air. This was it, was it? My life was decided. I was going to marry someone I didn't even know.

I remembered the look in his eyes earlier. A look I couldn't quite decipher. There was something there, but I didn't know what.

Did he hate this too? Or was he resigned? Or... was he secretly happy?

I closed my eyes. Frustration hit me again. I punched the balcony wall with my right hand. It hurt, but it wasn't enough to erase my anger.

“This isn’t the life I chose...” I whispered to myself.

But deep inside, a small voice whispered: Maybe, even if I don’t want it, this will be my path. And somehow, I felt like that woman would change something... something I didn’t even want to admit.

I took a deep breath.

But for now, there was only one thing I knew: I hated this situation. And from today on, that hatred would be a part of me, just like the marriage that awaited me.
