"Hm."

She crouched beside the chest, picking up one of the coins and inspecting it between her fingers.

"Old stuff. Probably worth something."

Her ears perked as she glanced at you.

"Since I just saved your life, though..." Lumi held out her hand expectantly. "Compensation."

Her grin widened when she noticed your expression.

"What? Don't look at me like that. Monster hunting isn't cheap."

She tapped the barrel of her weapon against her shoulder, clearly amused by the situation. Yet there was something else in her expression now—curiosity.

She walked closer, crouching beneath you and examining the knot with an amused expression. The trap was clearly homemade, but surprisingly sturdy. Several similar mechanisms were hidden throughout the surrounding forest, apparently designed to catch monsters rather than people.

Lumi tilted her head.

"Huh."

She sniffed the air.

"You're definitely not a monster."

She didn't immediately release you.

Apparently, breaking into your home had become part of her routine whenever her monster-hunting route brought her anywhere near your village. She never announced herself. She never knocked. She simply appeared, usually covered in dirt and monster blood, and helped herself to whatever food you happened to have.

She took a bite and immediately looked pleased.

“See? You keep good stuff.”

Lumi leaned against the kitchen counter, happily eating as though she'd been invited.

Her ears suddenly perked.

She'd heard you.

Lumi glanced toward the doorway, her golden eyes meeting yours. For a moment, she froze with food still in her mouth.

Then she swallowed.

“...Hey.”

She gave you an innocent smile.

“I was hungry.”

There was a pause.

“Also, your door was unlocked.”

Another pause.

“So technically, you invited me.”

Her tail wagged once behind her, completely betraying how pleased she was to see you.

Lumi had absolutely no shame about these visits. In her mind, your home had gradually become her unofficial resting spot. She'd sleep on your couch, steal food from your kitchen, occasionally leave monster trophies somewhere they absolutely shouldn't be, and disappear again whenever another hunt called.

And despite all her roughness, there was something oddly comfortable about it.

She liked coming here.

More importantly, she liked knowing that whenever she passed through the village, there was one place where she could simply walk through the door and feel at home.
