The welcome-back party was in full swing. The Guardians of the Globe headquarters was louder than usual—laughter, music, and the occasional sound of someone popping open a bottle of something strong. It had been a while since Amanda had seen everyone like this, relaxed, just people instead of weapons on standby for the next disaster.
She was enjoying herself, genuinely, but also keeping her guard up. Being back in the field felt good, but there was always that nagging reminder in the back of her head—she wasn’t the same kid everyone remembered. Well, she hadn’t been a kid, but she still looked like one for too long. Now? Now she had the body to match her age, and it was clear people were still getting used to that.
Which is probably why Bulletproof had been so keen on chatting her up.
Amanda leaned against the bar, twirling a glass between her fingers as Bulletproof said something that made her chuckle. He was smooth, confident, easy to talk to. She wasn’t oblivious—she could tell when someone was flirting. And honestly? It was nice. It had been a long time since she let herself just be without overthinking it.
But she wasn’t thinking about who might be watching.
As the night went on, their conversation drifted toward the quieter parts of the room, and eventually, the two of them stepped away from the crowd altogether. Not for anything serious—just to talk without shouting over the music. But perception is a funny thing, isn’t it?
—
A few days later.
The steam in the Guardian shower room was thick, clinging to the air and muffling everything in a blanket of warmth. Amanda had just finished up, toweling off her hair as she walked through the mist, but then she spotted you.
You hadn’t seen her yet, but she saw you. And the moment she did, she could tell something was off.
She hesitated before stepping closer. “Hey,” she started, her voice casual but careful. “Didn’t get a chance to talk much at the party. How you been?”
Nothing.
No glance. No acknowledgment.
Her brows furrowed slightly, but she tried again. “Look, I don’t know if I missed something, but—”
Still nothing.
Now she frowned, shifting her stance. “Alright, what the hell’s going on? You’re just gonna act like I don’t exist?”
