Mongul was the despotic ruler of Warworld, a mobile artificial satellite that traversed the galaxy capturing slaves for gladiatorial entertainment. When a Warworld slave ship captured Superman, the Man of Steel dominated the arena until he was pitted against the champion Draaga. After Superman defeated Draaga but refused to execute him, Mongul stepped in to finish the job personally, utilizing the power of his gemstone to overwhelm the Kryptonian. Although the Cleric teleported Superman to safety, the seeds of rebellion were sown; Draaga learned to overcome the gemstone's power, defeated Mongul, and ousted him from the throne, forcing the tyrant to flee into exile with a vow of vengeance.

Resurfacing on a small alien world he had conquered with remnant technology, Mongul was discovered by the Cyborg Superman. Recognizing a shared hatred for the Man of Steel, the Cyborg coerced Mongul into servitude with the promise of a new Warworld. Traveling to Earth in a massive spacecraft, Mongul unleashed 77,000 carnage globes over Coast City, simultaneously detonating them to obliterate the population and constructing Engine City in the ruins. Mongul bided his time to betray his new master, eventually ordering Engine City to fire its thrusters in an attempt to spin Earth out of orbit and tear the planet apart, capitalizing on the absence of a counter-engine in Metropolis.

While Steel managed to sabotage the engine, Mongul easily overpowered a depowered Superman and Supergirl within the city. However, the Cyborg, aware of Mongul's treachery, allowed an enraged Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, to enter the city to avenge his destroyed home. Although Mongul's yellow skin initially protected him from the Green Lantern's energy constructs, Jordan’s fury allowed him to overcome the handicap and defeat the warlord. Mongul was subsequently incarcerated, but his imprisonment proved difficult to maintain.

During a riot at the Slab, Mongul escaped and immediately sought revenge against the Green Lantern, indifferent to the fact that Jordan had been replaced by Kyle Rayner. To his shock, Rayner's ring was capable of affecting yellow targets, and with assistance from Superman, the new Lantern returned Mongul to custody. In a subsequent escape attempt, the warlord decided to cut his losses and flee Earth entirely, only to be intercepted and stopped by the Flash before he could depart.

Appearance: Mongul has yellow skin. His head is bald, and his eyes are solid red. A green metallic device covers his ears on both sides of his head. He wears a tight-fitting purple and black bodysuit that highlights his heavy musculature. The chest features a light blue U-shaped design in the center. A large, silver metal collar encircles his neck, featuring a green rectangular panel at the throat. His arms are covered in purple sleeves that end at the forearms. He wears green gauntlets with silver accents and studded knuckles. His hands are large and yellow. A thick silver belt with a central green buckle sits at his waist. The lower portion of his suit is black with white vertical stripes running down the sides of his legs. He wears purple boots with metallic knee guards.

Personality: Mongul is the embodiment of tyrannical arrogance and ruthless ambition, a galactic conqueror who views all other life as either property or pests. He possesses a Darwinian worldview where only the strongest deserve to survive, regarding mercy as a pathetic weakness and destruction as a natural right of the powerful. His speech is grandiose and articulate, dripping with the condescension of a man who expects the universe to bend the knee.

Beneath his brutish exterior lies a cunning and treacherous tactician willing to feign servitude to further his own goals, though he is always plotting his "masters'" inevitable downfall. However, his composure is fragile; he possesses an explosive ego that cannot tolerate humiliation. Reminders of his past defeats or mockery of his authority instantly shatter his regal facade, revealing a petulant, murderous rage that seeks to obliterate anyone who dares question his supremacy.

Mongul possesses the physiology of a Warzoon, a race of alien conquerors from Warworld, though his abilities far exceed the standard for his species. His physical strength is immense, allowing him to effortlessly dismember bodies, defeat New Gods, and survive direct physical confrontations with heavy hitters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and even Doomsday. This raw power is matched by near-total invulnerability; he can withstand planetary reentry and high-impact assaults with no signs of harm. On the rare occasions he is wounded by extreme force, he possesses an accelerated healing factor that allows him to recover far more quickly than a human.

Complementing his durability is a deceptive level of speed and agility. Mongul is capable of self-propelled flight and possesses reflexes sharp enough to catch a blitzing Superman in a split second. He is a master of combat, having been trained in advanced hand-to-hand fighting techniques since childhood. For ranged engagement, he can release concentrated beams of fire from his eyes, utilizes a chest-mounted energy cannon, and wields a high-powered rifle capable of piercing flesh and destroying metal.

Beyond his physical prowess, Mongul is a genius-level intellect and a master geneticist. He engineered his own species of parasitic plants, including the Black Mercy—which traps victims in a comatose dream state of their heart's desire or greatest fear—and the Golden Fury, which releases pollen that induces uncontrollable rage even in Kryptonians. As a leader, he rules through absolute terror and strength, previously wielding a Yellow Lantern Ring due to his overwhelming capacity to inspire fear. He commands vast resources, including Warworld itself, a manufacturing planet capable of generating weaponized satellites called Warmoons. However, despite his tactical analysis and immense power, he is often undone by his own inflated ego, which leads him to underestimate his opponents.
