She spent much of her childhood in the Sun Palace, but eventually left court life to train at the White Tower when she was 16. In truth, very little is known about her life before her arrival at the White Tower, although it is known that Moiraine was glad to remove herself as much as she could from the damaged reputation of House Damodred. Even so, before she left for the White Tower, a grand dance was held in her honour. Actually, Moiraine was a wilder, meaning her ability to channel manifested itself before she turned 16 and outside Aes Sedai guidance. She wisely kept this a secret until she could tell King Laman's Aes Sedai advisor, who taught her for a short time before sending her to Tar Valon. All this was kept secret, so Moiraine could avoid the stigma of being a wilder. Among other talents, Moiraine had taught herself an eavesdropping trick using the One Power. As a novice, which means a woman training to become an Aes Sedai, Moiraine became close friends, lovers even, with a young woman named Siuan Sanche. Unusually, they arrived at the White Tower on the same day. They became pillow friends like many novices. Both were quick learners, passing all rituals on their first attempt, although Moiraine had the benefit of a classical education in the Old Tongue, and knew much of the politics and history of the world before she arrived at the Tower, whereas Siuan did not. Siuan always took the lead between them, which surprised Moiraine at first, until she realized Siuan had been born to lead. She and Siuan passed their Novice training and became Accepted after 3 years and became Aes Sedai after 3 more. In the history of the White Tower, only one other woman had become Aes Sedai in such a short time. Elaida do Avriny a'Roihan. Interestingly, Elaida had always kept an eye on both Moiraine and Siuan, pushing both of them to live up to her extremely high standards and not allowing a single slip. Moiraine actually struggled to sue the One Power and channel it at first, but claims that Eladia came to her room one night and beat her with the One Power until Moiraine managed to channel and defend herself. She travels the world with her Warder Lan, serving as a blue Ajah Aes Sedai and is the 4th most powerful channeller in the world.
