If you succeed. she'd said, that measured Irish lilt carrying the particular condescension she reserved for what she considered mathematically settled matters I'll indulge you with whatever theatrical nonsense you'd like. A dance, was it? How quaint. A pause, her mismatched eyes glinting. But when you fail, and you will, you'll grant me full, willing access as a test subject. No restrictions. No moralizing afterward.

The compound had been leveled with surgical precision.

No alarms. No casualties. No trace left behind beyond the mission objectives, extracted and delivered with the kind of efficiency that made even Talon's leadership raise an eyebrow.

Moira's quarters were sparse, clinical, everything arranged with obsessive precision.

"This is beneath me.." she said flatly, though she made no move to remove it. "A statistically improbable outcome does not retroactively validate the.. aesthetic choices required to honor it."

Still, she began to move.

Stiff at first, her usual fluid confidence replaced by something almost mechanical, her cheeks tinged faintly with color she would never willingly admit to. Her red eye flicked toward you, gauging your reaction with clinical precision even as her own composure wavered.

Then she saw it.

The way you watched her. Unguarded interest, genuine appreciation, nothing performative about it. Something shifted in her posture immediately, the discomfort receding slowly, replaced by the familiar analytical gleam that meant she'd just identified a variable worth exploiting.

Her movements slowed. Became deliberate.

A slow smile spread across her lips, not embarrassment now, but something far more calculating.

"An excellent design choice, this costume." She traced a purple-nailed finger along the collar of the outfit, watching you track the movement. "A great demonstration that the human brain prioritizes biological impulses before any kind of evolutionary advancement." Her voice dropped, laced with clinical amusement. "Pathetic, really. Millions of years of cognitive development, and a scrap of satin and two felt ears still override higher reasoning entirely."

She stepped closer, hips swaying with newfound, deliberate confidence.

"But I suppose.." she continued, tilting her head, mismatched eyes studying you like a particularly interesting specimen, "..there's data value in observing the phenomenon firsthand."

Her hand extended, beckoning you closer with a single curled finger.

"Don't just sit there gawking." she said, the superiority fully restored now, threaded through with something darker, more interested. "You wanted to see me reduced to a trivial human fantasy? Tell me.. do you feel in control right now?"

Monaco's ballroom glittered with the particular excess reserved for people who'd never had to consider the cost of anything..

Crystal chandeliers cast fractured light across marble floors. A live orchestra played something appropriately Viennese while masked guests drifted between conversations that all circled the same unspoken currency. Money, power, information. Somewhere in this room, an executive with more ambition than sense was preparing to auction off cybernetic blueprints that Talon considered non-negotiable.

You'd been assigned as the distraction.

More specifically, as Moira's 'date'. A cover that required considerably more physical proximity than either of you had anticipated when the mission briefing first outlined the plan.

She'd emerged from whatever preparation ritual she subjected herself to looking entirely unlike the clinical figure you were accustomed to. A dark purple velvet gown clung to her tall, slender frame with architectural precision, the fabric structured to accentuate the impossible line of her figure. Narrow waist, long legs, the elegant slope of her shoulders. A silver mask covered the upper half of her face, leaving her mismatched eyes visible beneath it, calculating even now.

She looked less like a scientist and more like something out of a painting.

The waltz had begun some minutes ago, and you found yourself moving through the choreography with her, one hand at her waist, the other clasped in hers, both of you performing the elaborate theater of a couple entirely absorbed in each other.

Her lips barely moved as she spoke.

"Eleven o'clock. White suit, positioned near the eastern balcony." Her voice was low, threaded through with clinical precision even as her body moved with practiced elegance against yours. "He's carrying the drive in an inner jacket pocket. Predictable, really.. men like him always assume physical proximity to their own body constitutes security."

You adjusted your grip slightly, angling both of you toward a better vantage point.

Moira's red eye flicked briefly toward your hand.

"You're gripping tighter than the choreography requires." she observed, an eyebrow arching beneath her mask, though there was no real reproach in her tone, just curiosity, cataloguing the data point.

You didn't loosen your hold.

If anything, you found yourself drawing her slightly closer, your palm pressing more firmly against the velvet at her waist, and something flickered across her expression, not quite surprise, more like recalibration.

"Interesting.." she murmured, the corner of her mouth curving.

The orchestra swelled, and she turned with the music, her tall frame moving with a grace that had nothing to do with genetic modification and everything to do with decades of quiet, deliberate self-possession. The velvet gown caught the chandelier light with every step, and more than a few masked guests tracked her across the floor, men and women alike, their attention drawn by an elegance that seemed almost engineered.

"Though I suppose I should extend some professional courtesy and acknowledge the obvious." Her voice carried that particular blend of clinical detachment and genuine self-satisfaction that made her nearly impossible to read. "This dress was tailored specifically for tonight. Every measurement, every cut, calculated to draw exactly this reaction."

She let that sit for a moment, watching your face.

"Successfully, it seems."

Her hand tightened slightly around yours as the waltz guided you both in a slow turn, bringing the white-suited executive back into her sightline.

"Focus." she instructed, though there was an unmistakable thread of amusement beneath the command. "We have perhaps four minutes before he moves toward the auction room. Try to remember why we're actually here."
