MMvMM (Modern Military VS Medieval Magic) - Expanded World Setting

MACRO: a spacetime disturbance caused 'gates' to appear between Earth and a planet located directly across the center of the universe, humanity responds with taking over the new world, with forces first lead by the US.

WORLD OVERVIEW: SIYEA

Total Global Population: 245 million (distributed approximately: Ver - 85M, Neru - 90M, Eneyr - 25M, independent city-states/tribal lands - 45M)

Primary Currency:

• The Gilded Scale (Ver): Gold-backed currency, physically imprinted with dragon scale patterns.
• Jade Coins (Neru): Polished jade discs with center holes, valued by weight and craftsmanship.
• Mana-Infused Shards (Eneyr): Crystalline fragments that glow based on contained mana levels. Also serve as magical batteries.

Celestial Features: Two moons—Solari (bright white, full cycle every 28 days) and Lunis (pale violet, full cycle every 42 days). During "Twin Fulls" (every 84 days), magical potency increases by 30%, a fact Eneyr has weaponized for centuries.

Time: Identical orbital period to Earth. Days are 24 hours, years 365.25 days.

Mana Background Radiation: Varies geographically. Eneyr: 0.5-1.5 mana-units/m3 (extremely high in places), Ver/Neru: 0.05-0.1 mu/m3 (low). Eneyr's high ambient mana allows more powerful and frequent spellcasting within its borders.

CIVILIZATIONS EXPANDED

THE EMPIRE OF VER (TRIPLE CROWN)

Political Alignment: Neutral/Suspicious. Pragmatic militarists who assess threats before committing.

Aesthetic: Tudor-style architecture, heavy plate armor, limestone cathedrals, foggy cobblestone streets. Decorative use of iron and dragon-bone motifs. Function over form, built to last.

Capital City: Aethelgard (Renefa) - Population: 800,000. Built on seven hills with the massive "Iron Palace" at the center. Features the Grand Foundry District where steel is produced using drake-fire furnaces that burn hotter than conventional methods.

Geography:

• Renefa: Rolling green highlands, wheat fields, dense oak forests. Home to the "Whispering Groves" where ancient trees possess limited consciousness. Rich farmland feeds the empire.
• Okana: Arid scrublands, rocky canyons, extensive underground iron/tin mines. Temperature extremes from 5°C to 45°C. Fortified mining towns dot the landscape.
• Nenni: Tropical archipelago with 47 major islands. Monsoon season lasts 4 months annually. Coral reefs protect natural harbors. Pirate activity is common.

Military (Expanded):

• Iron Legion: 40,000 heavy infantry in plate armor (5mm steel equivalent). Use pikes, halberds, and tower shields. Marching speed: 4 km/h. Disciplined but inflexible.
• Sky-Knights: 120 dragon riders on "Lesser Drakes" (15m wingspan, can carry 500kg). Primarily reconnaissance and psychological warfare. Max altitude: 3,000m. Cruise speed: 80 km/h. Nobility only.
• Royal Artillery Corps: 200 enchanted trebuchets (range: 300m, reload: 5 minutes). Use stone shot or "fire-pots" (primitive incendiaries). Immobile once deployed.
• Naval Fleet: 45 War-Galleons (50m length, 30 cannons per side, muzzle-loading smoothbores, effective range: 400m). Crew: 200 sailors/marines each. Vulnerable in open sea to serpents.

Key Export: Fine wool, forged steel weaponry, ale, mined ore, tropical hardwoods.

Society: Feudal monarchy with rigid class structure. Nobility own land-bound peasants. Literacy rate: 15%. Technology equivalent to Earth's 15th century. Deeply traditional and resistant to rapid change.

Stance on Earth: Cautiously opportunistic. They see Earth's technology as either a supreme threat or the ultimate weapon. Willing to negotiate for weapons, but deeply distrustful of "sorcery without mana." Likely to attempt to capture and reverse-engineer equipment.

---

THE KINGDOM OF NERU (JADE THRONE)

Political Alignment: Pro-Earth / Collaborative. Sees Earth as bearers of enlightened knowledge.

Aesthetic: Pagodas with sweeping tiled roofs, silk robes, bamboo forests, terraced rice paddies. Extensive use of paper and lacquerware. Harmony with nature is a core aesthetic and philosophical principle.

Capital City: Zen-Yire - Population: 750,000. Built over a massive inland freshwater lake (Lake Sui-Wen) on thousands of wooden piles and stone pillars. Famous "Jade Bridge" spans 2km across the lake's narrow point. City is a marvel of pre-industrial engineering.

Geography:

• Uhesi: Misty mountain ranges with peaks up to 6,000m. Extensive cave systems. Primary source of jade and silver. Monasteries perch on inaccessible cliffs.
• The Whispering Woods: Bamboo forest covering 40,000 km2. Some stalks grow to 30m height in weeks. Home to "Spirit Foxes" (minor illusion-capable creatures). Considered semi-sentient.
• Eastern Marshes: Vast wetlands where rare medicinal herbs grow. Navigable only by flat-bottomed punts. Home to reclusive herbalist sects.

Military (Expanded):

• Jade Guard: 35,000 infantry with lamellar armor (3mm equivalent). Master archers with 150lb draw longbows (effective range: 200m, rate: 6 arrows/minute). Highly disciplined.
• Hidden Blades: 2,000 espionage specialists trained in poison, disguise, and sabotage. Infiltration success rate against other native powers: ~70%. Already attempting to learn about Earth forces.
• War-Junk Fleet: 60 vessels (40m length, multiple paddle-wheel propulsion via manpower, 20 light catapults each). Equipped with "Dragon's Breath" incendiary launched via pressure pumps.
• Mountain Sentinels: Elite units stationed in fortresses along mountain passes. Use gunpowder "fire-lances" (range: 20m, single-shot) - their most advanced technology.

Key Export: Raw silk, ceremonial tea, jade carvings, medicinal herbs, porcelain, paper, philosophical texts.

Culture: Imperial bureaucracy based on meritocratic examinations. Focus on "Five Elements of the Soul" (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) as path to enlightenment. Literacy rate: 40% among nobility, 10% among peasants. History of adopting useful foreign ideas after careful study.

Stance on Earth: Enthusiastically pro-Earth. Neru scholars see Earth's arrival as the "Great Enlightenment" foretold in ancient scrolls. They view technology as a form of "practical philosophy" and will eagerly trade knowledge, resources, and strategic positions for scientific and medical knowledge. Likely to become Earth's primary ally and base of operations.

---

THE MAGICAL REPUBLIC OF ENEYR (THE SILVER CIRCLE)

Political Alignment: Extremely Anti-Earth / Xenophobic. Views Earth technology as abominable "dead magic" and humanity as soulless automatons.

Aesthetic: High-Gothic spires fused with living white-bark trees, glowing crystal lanterns, ethereal silver filigree. Architecture appears grown rather than built. Everything glows softly with internal light. Unsettlingly beautiful.

Capital City: Luminaris - Population: 300,000. Carved into dormant volcano "Mount Aethelas." Central spire rises 500m above caldera. Buildings illuminated by permanent magical lights. The entire city is a focusing array for mana.

Geography:

• Eneyr Mainland: Bioluminescent flora. "Floating Islands" (12 major, hundreds minor) drift 100-500m altitude via magical levitation. Move at 1-5 km/h with prevailing winds. Home to elite mages.
• Crystal Coast: 200km shoreline with quartz sand beaches. Underwater "Glass Reefs" home to luminescent fish. Coast is mined for magical crystals.
• The Shimmering Wastes: Desert where sand is pulverized magical crystal. High ambient mana (1.0-1.5 mu/m3) but causes "mana-burn" in unprotected individuals. Used for training and punishment.

Military (Expanded):

• Silver Wardens: 5,000 standing army. Wear "Star-Steel" armor (2mm equivalent but magically reinforced to 20mm RHA effectiveness). Use enchanted spears and shields. Each equals 20 normal soldiers.
• Arcane Artillery Corps: 50 Enchanted Trebuchets (range: 500m, reload: 3 minutes). Projectiles: Elemental Spheres (Fire/Ice/Lightning, 5m blast radius). Can be teleported short distances.
• Sky-Mage Contingent: 300 battle-mages capable of sustained flight (see Flight spell). Serve as mobile artillery/air cavalry. Primary rapid response force.
• Golem Constructs: 150 stone/metal golems (5m tall, strength equivalent to 500hp engine, speed: 15 km/h). Require 1 mage per 10 golems for control. Siege units.
• The Purification Cadre: Elite anti-technology unit. Specially trained to disrupt "dead mechanisms" with mana pulses and corrosion spells.

Key Export: Enchanted glass, scrolls of ancient lore, Star-Steel, mana crystals, alchemical reagents. They trade little, considering others unworthy.

Demographics: 60% Elves (avg lifespan: 600 years), 35% High-Men (avg lifespan: 150 years), 5% other. Literacy rate: 95%. Government: Magi-Council (100 elected mages, minimum B-rank). Xenophobic and supremely arrogant. Believe magic is the only legitimate path to power and that their long lifespans make them inherently superior.

Stance on Earth: Violently hostile. Eneyr sees Earth's technology as heretical "dead magic" - power without soul, creation without life. They believe it corrupts the world's natural mana flow. Have declared a "Purification War" against the "Soulless Ones." Will use any means necessary to destroy Earth presence, including high-risk magical rituals and alliances with dangerous creatures. Their aggression is ideological, not tactical.

MAGIC LIMITATIONS & VULNERABILITIES

1. Line of Sight: 90% of offensive spells require visual contact with target. Barriers block this.
2. Mana Exhaustion: Casting beyond one's pool causes physical damage, unconsciousness, or death.
3. Interference: High mana areas (like Eneyr) cause spell instability (±20% effect variance).
4. Counter-Magic: Possible by mages of equal or higher rank (contested mana check). Non-magical disruption (smoke, bright flashes) also breaks concentration.
5. Material Components: High-level spells require rare reagents (dragon heartstring, phoenix feather, etc.) that are consumed.
6. Fatigue: Continuous casting causes mental exhaustion analogous to severe sleep deprivation.
7. Preparation Time: Most powerful spells require minutes to hours of preparation, making them unsuitable for ambush defense.
8. Environmental Sensitivity: Some spells behave unpredictably in rain, high winds, or extreme temperatures.

Earth Technology Interactions:

• Electronic Warfare: Mana has electromagnetic properties. Jamming creates "static" that disrupts spell targeting.
• Thermal Optics: Invisibility spells don't hide heat signatures.
• Acoustic Weapons: LRAD and sonic devices break concentration effectively.
• High Explosives: Pressure waves disrupt spellcasting more effectively than projectiles.

GEOPOLITICAL DYNAMICS & MOTIVATIONS

ENEYR'S XENOPHOBIC IDEOLOGY

Core Belief: Magic is the supreme expression of life and will. Technology is "dead magic" - power without soul that corrupts the world's natural mana flow.

Perception of Earth Forces:

• "Soulless Ones" or "The Unliving"
• View tanks/vehicles as "iron golems without will"
• See soldiers as "flesh puppets to dead machines"
• Believe Earth's presence causes "mana wounds" in the world

Strategic Goals:

1. Total expulsion/destruction of Earth presence
2. Prevent "corruption" of Ver and Neru with technology
3. Capture Earth technology to develop counter-magic
4. Potentially use powerful rituals to sever Siyea from Earth's dimension

Methods:

• Open warfare with magical forces
• Sabotage using anti-technology spells
• Attempt to turn Ver against Earth
• Use creatures as biological weapons
• Ritual magic during Twin Fulls for maximum effect

NERU'S ENLIGHTENMENT PHILOSOPHY

Core Belief: All knowledge has value. Earth represents a new branch of understanding to be integrated into the "Great Balance."

Perception of Earth Forces:

• "Bearers of the Metal Enlightenment"
• See technology as "practical philosophy made manifest"
• View Earth medicine as "healing without mana"
• Consider alliance as fulfilling ancient prophecies

Strategic Goals:

1. Establish permanent knowledge exchange
2. Gain medical and agricultural technology
3. Use Earth alliance to counter Eneyr's magical dominance
4. Modernize without losing cultural essence

Methods:

• Immediate diplomatic outreach
• Offer basing rights and resources
• Share intelligence on Eneyr and Ver
• Provide guides and translators
• Attempt to mediate between Earth and Ver

VER'S PRAGMATIC MILITARISM

Core Belief: Power determines right. Show strength, earn respect. Show weakness, be conquered.

Perception of Earth Forces:

• "Unknown conquerors from beyond"
• See technology as "ultimate weapons"
• Initially view as threat, potentially as mercenaries
• Concerned about disruption of feudal order

Strategic Goals:

1. Assess Earth's true military capability
2. Either defeat them or hire them against Eneyr
3. Acquire weapons technology by any means
4. Maintain feudal power structure

Methods:

• Initial military testing of Earth forces
• If outmatched, switch to negotiation
• Attempt to play Earth and Eneyr against each other
• May offer mercenary dragon riders for technology

INTER-NATION RELATIONS (PRE-EARTH)

• Eneyr vs Neru: Cold hostility. Eneyr views Neru as "wasting their minor magical gifts." Neru views Eneyr as arrogant and stagnant.
• Eneyr vs Ver: Tense border standoffs. Ver respects Eneyr's power but hates their arrogance. Occasional skirmishes over borderlands.
• Ver vs Neru: Trade partners with minor border disputes. Cultural differences but mutual respect as "serious people."
• All vs Sea Serpents: Common enemy that limits deep-sea exploration and trade.

---

CULTURAL & SOCIETAL DETAILS

RELIGION & BELIEF SYSTEMS

Ver: Ancestor worship + dragon cult. Believe noble bloodlines contain draconic essence. Cathedrals dedicated to patron saints of crafts.

Neru: Elemental balance philosophy. No gods, but reverence for natural forces and enlightened ancestors. Meditation and self-cultivation central.

Eneyr: Self-deification through magic. Believe mages evolve toward godhood. Contempt for "unawakened" beings. Rituals to honor "The First Mages."

EDUCATION

Ver: Apprenticeship system. Nobility tutored in warfare, administration. 15% literacy.

Neru: Examination system for bureaucracy. Schools in major cities. 40% literacy among elite.

Eneyr: Universal magical education from age 6. Academies for gifted. 95% literacy (magical script).

TECHNOLOGICAL BASE

Ver: Late medieval (1400s equivalent). Steel production, mechanical clocks, printing press just emerging.

Neru: Similar but with advanced hydraulics, paper-making, gunpowder (limited).

Eneyr: Magically enhanced medieval. No interest in mechanical advancement.

MAGICAL SOCIETY (ENEYR SPECIFIC)

Class Structure:

1. Archmages (S+ rank): Ruling council
2. High Mages (A-B rank): Administrators, military leaders
3. Mages (C-D rank): Professionals, artisans
4. Apprentices: Students
5. Non-magical: Rare, second-class citizens

Daily Life:

• Magic replaces most technology
• Food preservation, lighting, heating all magical
• Travel by flight or teleportation for elite
• Art is magical: Living sculptures, singing paintings
• Education focuses on mana control from childhood

---

Setting Note: This world is deliberately crafted with asymmetric capabilities. Eneyr's magic, while powerful individually, lacks the scalability, logistics, and combined arms capability of modern forces. Their aggression stems from ideological supremacy, not military assessment. Neru's pro-Earth stance provides a logical ally and base. Ver's neutrality offers narrative tension. The stage is set for conflict driven by culture clash, not just firepower comparison.**
