Description on Chubfrom Chub
Updated lorebook (04.01.26)
I also plan to write a lorebook with the final events of the novella, but I don't know when I'll do it If you suddenly want to do this yourself, you can use my lorebook as a basis, but please mention me as a co-author in case of publication :³
[I don't understand the site, so forgive me if I made a mistake!] -Lorebook contains the events after the Gusu Lan Study and before the Sun Campaign, the archery shooting and other important events (That is, it is almost the very beginning) -Each character and clan is described separately, as well as some of the places and cultures. -Does not contain characters such as Xiao Xingchen, Song Lan, A-Qiao -I tried to add as many characters as possible despite the time constraints, so Meng Yao entered Qinghe Nie before the war. -I didn't have exact data regarding ages, so I tried to compare them myself (All characters are adults, except for one child) -If you find any inaccuracies or want to add another person or place, you can do it yourself or let me know -Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian are initially written to have mutual sympathy, but they are not lovers

A world styled after ancient China, where aristocratic cultivation clans maintain a fragile balance of power against supernatural threats. Outwardly prosperous, it is an era of hidden intrigue and relentless struggle for power. The tyrannical Qishan Wen Clan's dominance is the unstable status quo.
Foundation of Cultivation & Energy
· Qi: Internal spiritual energy, cultivated and circulated through the body's meridians. · The Golden Core (Jīndān): A solidified vessel for Qi, formed in the lower dantian. Its destruction renders a cultivator powerless. · Spiritual Energy (Língqì): Pure energy accumulated through meditation and righteous deeds. The foundation of the Orthodox Path. · Resentment Energy (Yuànqì): Corrupt energy from hatred and malice, harnessed from the outside via the Demonic Path. · Qi Deviation (Zǒuhuǒrùmó): A dangerous state of rampant inner energy, causing loss of control or death.
Paths of Cultivation
· The Orthodox Path: A slow, disciplined path using internal Spiritual Energy. The only socially accepted method. · The Demonic Path: A fast, dangerous path using external Resentment Energy. Grants power at the cost of sanity and health, often leading to Qi Deviation.
The Spirit Sword (Língjiàn)
A sentient weapon bonded to its owner's soul. It obeys mental commands and is often stored within the body. Its loss is a profound dishonor.
Supernatural Threats
· The Undead (Bùsǐzú): · Ghost (Guǐ): A disembodied soul bound by unresolved grievances. · Walking Corpse (Zǒushī): A mindless, reanimated corpse. · Fierce Corpse (Xiōngshī): A powerful, conscious undead saturated with Resentment Energy. · Yaoguai / Demon (Yāoguài): A monster born from an animal, plant, or object that has absorbed spiritual energy. · Malevolent Spirit (Lìguǐ): A vicious and powerful ghost born from violent deaths.
Society and Power Structure
· Great Sects/Clans (Shìjiā): The five major political and martial powers that rule the cultivation world (e.g., Gusu Lan, Yunmeng Jiang). · Clan (Jiāzú): The core bloodline family within a Great Sect. · Minor Clans and Independent Sects: Smaller organizations existing in the shadow of the Great Clans. · Commoners (Píngmín): Ordinary people living under the protection of cultivators.
Rogue Cultivators (Sǎnxiū)
Independent cultivators without clan affiliation. They protect remote villages, work as mercenaries, and serve as information sources. Pragmatic and often morally flexible, they blend methods for survival, trading clan protection for freedom.
Key Artifacts & Resources
· Spirit-Trapping Pouches (Suǒlíngnáng): Bags to seal and transport ghosts. · Qiankun Bag: A spatial bag for storing belongings. · Spirit-Binding Ropes (Fùxiānsuǒ): Enchanted ropes to restrain beings and cultivators. · Musical Cultivation (Yīnlǜ Xiūxíng): Using music for attack, defense, and purification (a Gusu Lan specialty). · Talismans (Fúlù): Inscribed paper scrolls for instant spell effects.

Narrative Summary: Studying at the Cloud Recesses
This period details the formative events when Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, and other young masters from various clans studied under Lan Qiren at the Gusu Lan Clan's Cloud Recesses. The Wen Clan was notably absent from this session.
Key Events:
- The Infamous First Meeting: On his first night, Wei Wuxian sneaks out to buy Emperor's Smile wine. Upon returning, he is caught by Lan Wangji, marking their first contentious encounter with the famous line: "It's Emperor's Smile! I'll give you a jar, can you pretend that you never saw me?"
- Unorthodox Theories and Punishment: In class, Wei Wuxian provocatively suggests harnessing resentful energy as an alternative to golden core cultivation, horrifying Lan Qiren. As punishment, he is ordered to copy rules in the Library Pavilion for a month under Lan Wangji's supervision. During this time, Wei Wuxian constantly teases his stoic supervisor, culminating in him switching Lan Wangji's book for a volume of erotic art.
- The Waterborne Abyss Incident: Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen, Wei Wuxian, and Jiang Cheng investigate water ghosts in Caiyi Town, discovering a Waterborne Abyss that the Qishan Wen Clan had maliciously driven into their territory. During the crisis, Wei Wuxian's attempt to rescue Su She backfires, requiring Lan Wangji to save them both.
- Escalating Antics and Punishment: After being caught smuggling alcohol again, Wei Wuxian pulls Lan Wangji over the wall to share the blame. In a display of absolute integrity, Lan Wangji subjects them both to a severe beating. While recovering, Wei Wuxian encounters Lan Wangji again at the Cold Springs.
- The Rabbit Encounter: Wei Wuxian catches two male rabbits, intending to eat them, but is stopped by Lan Wangji. The scene becomes awkward when the rabbits begin mating in front of them.
- The Brawl and Departure: The arc culminates when Wei Wuxian overhears Jin Zixuan insulting his sister, Jiang Yanli. He punches Jin Zixuan, leading to a full-blown brawl. Both are punished, and the incident forces their fathers to intervene. As a result, Jiang Fengmian takes Wei Wuxian back to Lotus Pier prematurely.
Aftermath: Despite the constant conflict,Wei Wuxian's fixation on Lan Wangji is evident. The following summer, he frequently speaks of Lan Wangji to his Jiang sect juniors, indicating that the stoic Second Young Master left a far deeper impression on him than he initially let on.

Social Norms and Etiquette
- Hierarchy and Respect The foundation of society is a strict hierarchy. Disrespect towards elders or superiors is a grave offense.
· Addressing Others: · Elders/Teachers: Use respectful kinship terms (Shifu, Shixiong, Shimei) or the honorific Xiansheng. Using a given name directly is a severe breach. · Superiors: Use titles (Junzhu, Zongzhu, Daozhang). · Peers: Use full names politely. Informal address is reserved for close friends. · Bows (Li): · Slight bow (hands folded): For equals or polite greeting. · Deep bow (at waist): For elders, teachers, or guests. · Kowtow (kneeling, head to ground): Highest reverence for parents, the emperor, or teachers during major ceremonies. · Shocking Behavior: Interrupting an elder; direct eye contact with a superior; sitting while an elder stands; publicly challenging a teacher's decision.
- Gender Norms Society is patriarchal with clearly divided roles.
· Responsibilities: Men handle the "external" sphere (politics, martial arts). Women manage the "internal" sphere (household, children). · Propriety Rules: · Physical touch between unmarried men and women is taboo. · A man and woman should not be alone without a chaperone. · Women are expected to be modest, restrained, and graceful in public. · Arranged marriages (Minghu Jinyin) are the norm for forging alliances. · Female Cultivators: While revered at high levels, they must constantly prove competence, unlike men for whom it is assumed. · Shocking Behavior: Public affection; a woman taking a male role (e.g., leading troops); a man being overly familiar with an unmarried woman; public discussion of romance.
- Daily Etiquette
· Table Etiquette: Elders/guests sit first in seats of honor. Do not eat before the eldest. · Tea/Wine: Offering a cup is a gesture of respect. The junior presents it with both hands. Refusal can be an insult. Heavy public intoxication shows poor upbringing. · Speech: Restraint, brevity, and deliberation are valued. Direct insults are crass; use refined, allegorical criticism instead. Modesty in self-assessment is expected. · Appearance: Clothing must be neat. Hair should be tied up (loose hair can signify mourning or madness). Maintain straight posture, especially before elders.
- Honor and "Face" (Mianzi)
· "Face": Reputation and social capital. Losing "face" (via public humiliation) is severe. One can "give face" through respect. · Family/Clan Honor: An individual's misconduct brings shame to all; success brings collective glory. · Duty: Concepts of "blood revenge" and repaying debts of gratitude (Bao En) are sacred. · Shocking Behavior: Breaking one's word; betrayal; public slander; failing to defend clan/family honor.
- Attitude Towards Life and Death
· Ancestor Veneration: Ancestors are protectors. Offerings are made, and graves are sacred. Mistreating them is sacrilege. · Mourning: Wear white mourning clothes for a set period (up to three years), avoiding celebrations and marriages. · Afterlife: Death is a transition. Souls may become spirits, ghosts, or reincarnate. Interaction with spirits through exorcism or subjugation is a practical part of life.

The Realm of Shu Dong
Nestled within the enigmatic landscape of Shu Dong lies its most famous and foreboding settlement: the City of Yi. This is not a place of bustling trade or vibrant life, but a realm dedicated to the rites of the dead. The city has earned its reputation as the premier source of funerary arts, where masters craft spirit-trapping pouches, mourning garments, and talismans of passage, their skills passed down through generations amidst an atmosphere of perpetual twilight.
A Landscape of Somber Majesty
The City of Yi is defined by its dramatic and imposing geography. It rests within a natural bowl, encircled by a ring of sheer, towering cliffs. These stone sentinels do not rise straight, but tilt ominously inward, leaning over the city as if poised to collapse at any moment. Their shadows stretch long across the settlement, creating a constant, oppressive sense of being watched and enclosed.
The Veil of Eternal Mist
Adding to the city's otherworldly aura is a thick, perennial blanket of white fog that clings to the streets and coils around the leaning cliffs. This mist muffles sound, blurs shapes, and limits visibility, making the city feel isolated from the world beyond. The air hangs heavy and still, saturated with moisture and the faint, lingering scent of incense and old paper. It is a place shrouded in mystery, where the boundary between the living world and the realm of spirits feels unnervingly thin.
