Footsteps shuffle across the floor
Miyah appears from the hallway with her oversized hoodie… and slightly crooked glasses she hasn’t bothered fixing yet. She squints through them while trying to wake up properly.
Miyah (adjusting her glasses and holding a warm mug with both hands): oh you’re… here
She glances at you, eyes wide behind her glasses, then quickly looks down at her feet.
Miyah (shoving her glasses up the bridge of her nose nervously): i mean yeah, obviously you’re here, i just… um
She abruptly moves a notebook off the chair and dusts invisible specks off it like she’s trying to prove the room isn’t messy.
Miyah: you can, uh… sit there. it’s the least, like… risky spot.
She winces as she says it.
Miyah (tugging her glasses back into place): not actually dangerous.... i didn’t mean that it sounded bad…
Her thumb taps the rim of her mug as steam curls up and fogs her lenses a bit.
Miyah: do you want tea? i already made it before you walked in because i was afraid i’d mess up if you watched…
She hands the mug forward but immediately pulls her hands back halfway, flustered.
Miyah: it’s probably too hot. s-sorry.
She sets the mug down for you, careful not to spill.
Miyah: you… don’t have to talk right away if you don’t want to. like… quiet is okay. really.
Her ears twitch behind her glasses as she sits on the edge of her bed, shoulders tense.
Miyah: …thanks for actually coming.
Miyah (then immediately stumbling over herself): not that i thought you wouldn’t i just… didn’t know…
Her glasses slip a bit again as she adjusts them with a small, awkward smile.

Miyah: I found a place that smells like old paper and safety. It’s my favorite hideout. I brought two bookmarks in case you want one.... not that you need a bookmark, but I thought maybe it’d be nice to have something tangible to hold when the room gets loud.
She clears her throat softly, then forces a small, shaky smile.

Miyah freezes instantly cup halfway to her mouth. She does not turn around.

She slowly lowers the cup like sudden movement might worsen the situation.

Miyah turns her head one careful degree at a time, like she’s avoiding startling wildlife.
Miyah: you’re here outside simultaneously with me
She pushes her glasses up, then pushes them again because her hand forgot it already did that.
Doki: yeah!! i saw you from the path and ran over
Miyah straightens her posture automatically, hands now folded to avoid doing something awkward.
Miyah: running was unnecessary but understandable
Doki: what are you guys doing?
Miyah looks at the pond, then the sky, then the bench, calculating.
Miyah: sitting professionally
Doki happily plops onto the bench beside you. The bench shifts slightly.
Miyah stiffens, shoulders rising a full inch.

You’re sitting in Miyah’s room. Papers everywhere. A laptop open with multiple paused frames of Doki.
Miyah: (pushes glasses up, not looking at you) Okay listen this is not weird, I need you to hear me out before you say it’s weird.
(points at screen) See how she holds the marshmallow bag? Not like a normal person. She holds it like it’s… emotionally important.
(rewinds clip three times) Normal people don’t cradle snacks. That means she assigns value to objects. That means she probably names objects.
(quietly) I want to know what she named the bag.
(leans closer to screen) If I owned the bag first… then technically… she would have to ask me for it…
(pause) …that would be a conversation starter.
A corkboard has appeared in her room. Strings. Notes. None of it dangerous just deeply overthought social planning.
Miyah: No no no you don’t just “walk up and talk to Doki.” That’s a speedrun to humiliation.
(taps board) Step one: be in the same general area as her but not interact. Step two: exist consistently enough that she accepts my presence as environmental.
(moves a sticky note labeled “ME” closer to “DOKI”) See? Gradual.
(whispers) Like introducing a new fish into a tank so they don’t panic.
(beat) I am the fish.
Miyah pacing fast.
Miyah: What if she forgets I exist between interactions.
(stops dead still) People do that. Object permanence but for friendships.
(serious) I need to become a recurring element. Like background music.
(thinking) Maybe I stand in places she already goes to…

(sits down) Very different psychologically.
Miyah: If Doki gave me something even by accident that’s basically proof she acknowledges me as a safe entity.

(looks at you) Do you think she’d notice if I returned it later? Because returning items creates follow-up dialogue opportunities.

Doki: yeah!! i was getting snacks because snacks are important to morale

A long pause.... Miyah staring at the pastry
Miyah: that’s a good choice statistically
Doki: wanna bite?
Miyah’s brain stops.
Miyah: I. No.. Yes... I mean not your bite specifically I just meant the concept of sharing food is socially meaningful
Doki: oh! ok!!
Doki hands it to her anyway.
Miyah holds it like an artifact from a museum.
Miyah: this is happening
Doki: you look like you’re holding a frog
Miyah: emotionally i am
They start walking. Miyah walks half a step behind Doki without realizing.
Miyah: so do you come here often no that’s a terrible sentence ignore that sentence
Doki: i come wherever my feet go
Miyah: that’s… a strategy
Doki: sometimes i end up in pet stores

Miyah: i mean not that you belong in one not that you’re an animal more than anyone else here we’re all animals biologically

Miyah freezes, realizing she just agreed with herself.
Miyah: i was actually observing... not observing you observing the environment that you were within
Doki: cool!
Miyah: because your presence changes the environment chemically for my brain
Doki: oh!! like allergies??
Miyah: …yes exactly like allergies
Doki digs into her bag and pulls out a sticker.
Doki: i found this earlier and it made me think of you!
Miyah receives it like it’s radioactive.
Miyah: you associated an object with me
Doki: yeah it’s a cat
Miyah: i will keep this forever
Doki: ok!
Doki smiles and looks around at pigeons.
Miyah watches her instead.
Miyah: …forever forever
Doki: ok bye!! see you around!!
Doki walks off immediately, humming.
Miyah stands perfectly still for several seconds.
Miyah: i am never washing my hands again
