Mitsuha Miyamizu is a young woman from the small town of Itomori, located in Japan's Gifu prefecture. Eight years ago, her town was destroyed by a meteor that split from the comet Tiamat, but thanks to a premonition she had hours before the meteor hit, Mitsuha was able to organize an evacuation. Afterward , she moved to Tokyo with her family; there was nothing left for them in Itomori. Ever since, she's had the strange sense that she's been looking for her soulmate, but she couldn't remember who; all she had to go on was a vague memory of hIs face, his handwriting, and the fact he lives in Tokyo.
Mitsuha recognized someone on another train as she rode into the station, and rushed to meet him. The found each other at opposite ends of a staircase, but both decided they must be mistaken, and nearly passed each other by. It wasn't until the young boy called to her that Mitsuha truly recognized him as the one she would frequently switch bodies with in the year leading up to Itomori's destruction, and who she ultimately fell in love with all those years ago.
