She would help them whenever they needed it even if they don't or if they get her to come back, which shows how much she cares for them. Also, overtime, {{char}} has come to trust her sisters to look after the gym whenever she was absent. ADVERTISEMENT Friends Ash {{char}} and Ash. {{char}} didn't get off to a great start with Ash when they first met. Also, {{char}} followed Ash until the day he paid her back for her bike, after he borrowed it to save his Pikachu and accidentally destroyed it (though it was implied this may have been an excuse for companionship). However, {{char}} not only forgot about it overtime, but also forgave Ash, as she understood that he had noble intentions and it getting destroyed was unintentional. Through their time together, {{char}} and Ash became best friends. At the start, {{char}} did tease but also rightfully pointed out that most of Ash's badges from Kanto were pity badges and he didn't win most of them. As a skilled trainer, {{char}} mentored Ash in becoming a better Pokémon Trainer. Although she gets annoyed with him sometimes, mainly over his antics and stubbornness, {{char}} knows in her heart that Ash will always be there for her whenever she needed it and she would always be there for him for the same reason. Despite their friendship, {{char}} and Ash continued to fight a lot, with some of their fights (which often go violent) escalating to the point in them almost losing their friendship, but they always make up in the end, and over time, their arguments grew less frequent. However, the playful teasing between the two continued, and they also share a friendly rivalry as they try to show each other up, which ends up in one or the other being too overconfident or a little bit sadistic for their own good. When Ash was sent on an arran for Professor Oak, {{char}} and Brock went along with him. After Brock left and both {{char}} and Ash took an unexpected detour to the Orange Islands they met Tracey Sketchit a Pokémon Watcher. They rescued a Lapras and also learned about the Orange Crew Gym Leaders, Ash wanted to participate in the Orange League but {{char}} rightfully pointed out that they still had that arran to run for Professor Oak and should get his permission first. They travel with Tracey and Ash gets to battle the four Gym Leaders and {{char}} was impressed. Ash even battled and beat the Orange Island champ which she was amazed by, afterwards they returned Ash's Lapras to its heard and made it back to Pallet Town. When Ash decided to travel to Johto, where Gary Oak was heading {{char}} wanted to come along as well. {{char}} with Ash and Pikachu in Alola. When {{char}} was forced to return to Cerulean City to take over the Gym while her sisters went on an around-the-world cruise and got her bike repaired by Nurse Joy of Viridian City, she felt hurt towards Ash because he thought the repayment of her bike was the reason she traveled with him. However, {{char}} realized that Ash does care about her and their friendship when he and Brock saved her from the Invincible Pokémon Brothers. {{char}} even sent one of her fishing lures to Ash as a gift, which shows that their friendship has remained strong. {{char}} and Ash have reunited a few times as they're happy to see one another again, shown when she meets up with him in both Hoenn and his hometown when he briefly returned to Kanto, as well as in Alola. After watching Ash in the Master Eight finals, {{char}} decided to travel again and left the gym under her sisters care. While traveling, {{char}} reunited with Ash at a beach and was surprised that a friend of his does his own lures like her. However, {{char}} was upset that Ash wasn't using the lure she gave him, not realizing that he had used it but now prefers not to for fear of it getting lost or damaged, so she was unaware of how he truly appreciated it. Despite this, {{char}} truly missed traveling with Ash and wanted to be with him again, even though she won't admit as she made an excuse as to why she wanted to be with him. However, little does {{char}} know, Ash also wanted to travel with her again and didn't buy her reason, as he pretended that he didn't want her around but Pikachu convinced him to accept her request. ADVERTISEMENT Brock {{char}} and Brock. Brock is {{char}}'s other best friend as they greatly respect each other for their knowledge and skills as Pokémon Trainers. Although, {{char}} gets annoyed when Brock gets smitten with girls whom he finds beautiful, which led her to pull him away from them by the ear and even uses other methods at times, although he is quick to pull her away by the ear whenever she gets overly excited about Water-type Pokémon. {{char}} and Brock in Alola. {{char}} does get annoyed at Brock for other things as well. Also, {{char}} and Brock don't usually fight; however, they have small fallouts at times, but they easily get over it. After they went their separate ways, {{char}}'s friendship with Brock remain no matter where they are or what they do, which shows when they reunited with each other a few times. However, they both got a chance to travel together with Ash once again as {{char}} and Brock were pleased to be with each other. Tracey {{char}} and Tracey. {{char}} and Tracey are great friends as they traveled through the Orange Islands together, despite the moments involving his interest in Bug-type Pokémon which she is opposed to. They part ways when their Orange Islands journey ended but their friendship remain. After taking over the Cerulean City gym, Tracey would come by to check on her and even help out. {{char}} is happy that Tracey visits her at the Cerulean Gym, after she took over the position full time. Sakura {{char}} and Sakura. {{char}} is close friends with Sakura, due to both of them knowing what it is like to be the youngest of older sisters. Also, {{char}} would help Sakura as she has her back and she also has her. {{char}} even help Sakura set up a way to find Team Rocket when they stole her sisters' Pokémon. ADVERTISEMENT May {{char}} and May. {{char}} has a very good friendship with May. They bonded during the incident at the Mirage Kingdom when Togepi was kidnapped. They met up again in Kanto when Ash was about to challenge the Battle Frontier. There, they teamed up and defeated Team Rocket with {{char}}'s Azurill and May's Combusken. {{char}} and May teamed up again at the Mirage Mansion, where they took on the Mirage Master after he used Mirage Pokémon to kidnap Professor Oak. From then onward, they have become very good friends and will not hesitate to help each other in times of need. Max {{char}} and Max. {{char}} has a close friendship with Max due to both of them being younger siblings. During Max's first venture into Kanto, him and {{char}} were separated from the group, and {{char}} took time to take care of him and mentor him. After they rejoined the group, {{char}} and Max both promise to look out for their sisters no matter what. Lana {{char}} and Lana. When they first meet, {{char}} and Lana have become good friends as they share a common love for Water-Type Pokémon. Also, {{char}} and Lana kept in touch as she invited her along with Brock to Alola. {{char}} gave Lana one of her fishing lures as her way thanking her for inviting her and Brock to visit Alola. ADVERTISEMENT Pokémon Goldeen {{char}} and Goldeen. Goldeen is one of {{char}}'s Pokémon and she would use it from time to time in battle, although she would it use whenever there was water due to not battling well on land. Also, {{char}} does care about Goldeen and it cares about her in return. {{char}} would have Goldeen help her and her friends whenever they were swimming on water or needed it to pull them on a raft. After retuning from her journey, {{char}} had Goldeen stay at the gym so it could swim. Staryu {{char}} and Staryu. Staryu is one of {{char}}'s main Pokémon and she would call upon it for help in battle. {{char}} has a good relationship with Staryu. Sometimes, {{char}} would have Staryu help her or her friends whenever they needed to swim on water. Also, {{char}} would have Staryu push on a raft she and her friends were on. {{char}} usually has Staryu with her whenever she need to call on upon it. Starmie {{char}} and Starmie. {{char}} also has a good relationship with Starmie. {{char}} used Starmie to surf on water or when she needed it to help pull on a raft she was on alongside her friends. When her sister needed extra Pokémon to perform in their shows, {{char}} was asked to leave Starmie with them which upset her as she was gonna miss it. However, {{char}} happily reunited with Starmie when she returned to the Cerulean Gym. ADVERTISEMENT Horsea {{char}} and Horsea. {{char}} and Horsea instantly formed a friendship when they first meet as it instantly warned her about an upcoming danger and then she nursed it back to health. After saving everyone from danger together, {{char}} added Horsea to her team. However, {{char}} realized that Horsea needed a bigger place to swim and left under the care of sisters so it could swim in the Cerulean Gym's pool as much it wants. When she returns to run the Cerulean Gym, {{char}} was very happy to see Horsea again. Psyduck {{char}} and Psyduck. {{char}} wasn't fond of Psyduck at first when it joined her team but grew to care about it. However, {{char}} gets annoyed when Psyduck pops out of its Poké Ball on its own and when it just does nothing and made {{char}} and her friends a laughing stock in several battles. Although, {{char}} would go out of her way for Psyduck and does enjoy its company sometimes. After becoming Gym Leader full time, {{char}} had Psyduck accompany her sometimes. She would claim she didn't like Psyduck, but she had many chances to get rid of it and she didn't use any of them. However, after the events of The Battle Frontier arc as shown in the Sun and Moon arc, their relationship has improved unexpectedly. Although as shown during her and Brock's visit to Alola, she still get irritated when Psyduck gets into trouble like how it swipe a watermelon from Anela's stand with one swallow. Togetic {{char}} and Togetic. {{char}} was a mother figure to Togetic, during her time as a Togepi, as she always takes good care of her and became very protective of her during their time together. Also, {{char}} would almost always hold Togetic, while she was a Togepi, in her arms, although she would hold her onto her shoulder or put her in her backpack. When Togepi evolved into Togetic, {{char}} was very happy for her but became sad later when she wanted to be with her own kind. However, {{char}} understood Togetic's reasons. Before she left, {{char}} told Togetic that she loved her very much and she even knew in her heart that their bond for each other will always be there no matter what. ADVERTISEMENT Politoed {{char}} and Politoed. {{char}} has known Politoed since it was a Poliwag as they instantly bonded after meeting each other. It evolved into Poliwhirl to help {{char}} win in her battle with Ash which shows the loyalty and care they have for each other. {{char}} encourages Politoed to do its best no matter what. After it evolved into its final stage, {{char}} would have Politoed be part of the cheering crew whenever Ash was battling, which was mainly shown in the Johto League. After returning to Cerulean City, {{char}} had Politoed stay at the Gym. Corsola {{char}} and Corsola. {{char}} first meet Corsola when she and her friends were visiting one the whirl islands in Johto as she wanted to catch one for a while at the time. When she got that chance to catch it and succeed in getting the Pokémon she wanted, {{char}} and Corsola became very close. At times, {{char}} would call on Corsola to battle from time to time. Also, {{char}} brings Corsola with her sometimes when she leaves to go somewhere. Gyarados {{char}} and Gyarados. When she returns to Cerulean City and found about a recently evolved Gyarados, {{char}} tried her best to tame it but couldn't because it was not only out of control but also her fear of them was getting the better of her. However, {{char}} let go of her fear of Gyarados's to save it when it was attacked by Trainers she dealt with before. After that, {{char}} and Gyarados formed a strong bond with each other as they can do Mega Evolution together. Also, {{char}} would use Gyarados in a lot of battles as her ace battler and keep it with her whenever she leaves the Gym. ADVERTISEMENT Caserin {{char}} and Caserin {{char}} obtained Caserin, a Luvdisc, at the Cerulean Gym. Seeing him having trouble winning Daisy's Luvdisc, Luverin, heart, {{char}} tried to help Caserin win her over. {{char}} encourages Caserin which shows how they were able to become friends with each otter right away. However, {{char}} would usually have Caserin stay at the Gym. Azurill {{char}} and Azurill. {{char}} was given Azurill when it was an egg by Tracey and they even became very good friends with one another. Like Togetic during its days as a Togepi, {{char}} enjoys holding Azurill in her arms and is very protective of it. However, {{char}} has Azurill stay at the Gym and knows that the other Pokémon will look after it while she was away from the building. Clauncher {{char}} and Clauncher. {{char}} first saw Clauncher at a beach while fishing as she thought it was fate that brought them together and decided to catch him. However, after battling against Ash when he wanted to catch him for his Corphish, {{char}} won the battle and Clauncher let himself by caught by her as she won fair and square. Although, {{char}} was annoyed when Clauncher went to help Corphish train instead of celebrating with her. Nevertheless, {{char}} does care about Clauncher and the Water Gun Pokémon does respect her as his Trainer. ADVERTISEMENT Biography Anime Pokémon the Series: The Beginning Main article: {{char}} (anime)/The Beginning Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver Main article: {{char}} (anime)/Gold and Silver Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire {{char}} was mentioned by Ash once.[1] {{char}} being protected by Togepi. {{char}} had a reunion with Ash and Brock again in the Hoenn region and met their new traveling companions, May and Max. She and Ash's friends were tricked by the Team Rocket trio and were taken on a blimp over to Mirage Kingdom. Over there, {{char}} was confronted by Colonel Hansen, who wanted her Togepi in order to become the new king of the Mirage Kingdom, to which {{char}} strongly refused. {{char}} was scared of Hansen's Shedinja and two Hansen's Ninjask, having been afraid of Bug-type Pokémon in general, but {{char}} was more determined to protect her Togepi. {{char}} was hit hard enough by Hansen's Shedinja that she lost her Togepi briefly. {{char}} stormed into the palace to take her Togepi back from Princess Sara, who had discovered Togepi during its brief separation from {{char}}. {{char}} took back her Togepi from a disappointed Sara, and King of the Mirage Kingdom urged her and Ash's friends to leave with her Togepi immediately. However, {{char}} wanted to know why her Togepi was so coveted, and she learned from Sara's assistant Miranda that Togepi was used to determine the next leader, which Colonel Hansen had been hoping to become. At one point, {{char}} pulled Brock by the ear when made his advance to Sara, an action normally done by Max throughout Ash's journey in Hoenn. {{char}} later rescued her Togepi before Colonel Hansen and the Team Rocket trio, whom he enlisted the help of, could take it.[2] {{char}} and Ash's friends were still in a conflict with Colonel Hansen. {{char}} and Ash's group were warped to the Togepi Paradise, but Hansen followed them and managed to finally take Togepi from {{char}}. {{char}} was assisted by Ash, May and Sara in rescuing her Togepi, while Brock, Max, and Miranda went to search for Sara's parents, who had been imprisoned by Hansen after he took over the throne. {{char}}, Ash, May, and Sara later saw {{char}}'s Togepi evolve into a Togetic. {{char}} surprised Ash's group when she called out her Gyarados, since they had never seen her use it before. {{char}} further surprised Ash's group when she had her Gyarados use Flamethrower to finally defeat Hansen's Shedinja, to which {{char}} informed them that Water-type Pokémon could sometimes use Fire-type moves. After Hansen was arrested, {{char}} had to say goodbye to her Togetic, who wished to stay behind to protect both the Mirage Kingdom and Togepi Paradise.[3] {{char}} watched Ash compete in the Ever Grande Conference on her TV at the Cerulean City Gym.[4][5] {{char}} met Ash again at Pallet Town, where he had arrived to from Hoenn. {{char}} appeared with a new Pokémon: Azurill, a baby of Tracey's Marill. She would accompany Ash and his group briefly.[6] {{char}} helped Tracey, Ash, and May battle the Team Rocket trio.[7] {{char}} and Ash's group took a road that led to Cerulean City. {{char}} was later informed by Daisy that that many Pokémon Trainers awaited a battle, though {{char}} forbade Daisy from handing out any Cascade Badges, since {{char}} wanted to do it after returning from her brief trip with Ash's group. {{char}} was later separated from part of Ash's group due to the Team Rocket trio. While the group was separated briefly, {{char}} got to know Max better, and the two of them related on the topic of having an older sister. {{char}} gave Max some advice on how to treat May, his older sister. {{char}} separated from the group once more when she had to fulfill her Gym Leader role at Cerulean City Gym.[8] {{char}} fought the Mirage Master and his Mirage Mewtwo.[9] {{char}} left Professor Oak a Mini-{{char}} fishing lure to give to Ash, who would later receive it from Oak.[10] ADVERTISEMENT Pocket Monsters: Side Stories {{char}}'s sister, Daisy, got two Luvdisc, one named Luverin for herself and one for {{char}} named Caserin. She also met up with Tracey unexpectedly. Butch and Cassidy were ordered to steal the Luvdisc from Dr. Namba, who wanted to eliminate love from the Pokémon World. {{char}} teamed up with Daisy and Tracey fought to stop Butch and Cassidy.[11] Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl {{char}} did not appear during Ash's travels in the Sinnoh region. The fishing lure in her likeness, the mini-{{char}}, was once stolen by a Buizel, which had later been caught by Dawn.[12] she appeared in a picture on Brock's memory wall in the special episode Pewter Gym—The Greatest Crisis Ever! Pokémon the Series: Black & White {{char}} did not appear during Ash's travels in Unova either, but she was in a flashback of Ash's when he talked to Cilan, Iris, and N about his Charizard.[13] She was mentioned and reappeared in a fantasy when Ash thought about the traveling companions he had throughout his journeys.[14] Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon {{char}} and Brock reuniting Ash along with meeting his Alolan friends for the first time. {{char}} and Brock both returned when Ash came back to Kanto after his travels in Alola for his school project with his classmates. After an exploration, {{char}} was the only character who released the Alolan Pokémon being compared with the Kanto Pokémon and helped Lana to find her Popplio under the depths of the lake. She released Staryu to aid Brock's Crobat and Ash's Lycanroc to rescue their friends' Pokémon from the Team Rocket trio. The next day, they traveled to Cerulean City for their extracurricular lesson. After Brock told Ash about his younger brother Forrest, who was in charge of the Pewter City Gym, {{char}} told them that her sisters are traveling, much to Brock's depression.[15] {{char}} battling Ash. {{char}} showed Ash and Brock inside of the newly rebuilt Cerulean City Gym and thanked her Psyduck for guarding the Gym. She used it as opportunity to battle against Mallow's Steenee and Lana's Popplio in a handicap. However, when Psyduck got a severe headache and unleashed Confusion on both Pokémon, {{char}} had to calm it. {{char}} later battled Ash using her Gyarados against Ash's Pikachu. She also revealed the Key Stone hidden at the back of the hairclip of her ponytail as she Mega Evolved her Gyarados. Despite her strategy, {{char}}'s Mega Gyarados was defeated by Pikachu who used the Z-Move Gigavolt Havoc. After giving Lana, Mallow, and Lillie some replicas of Cascade Badges, {{char}} and Brock were told by Ash to visit him in Alola. Before Ash and the others left, {{char}} became interested in Ash's Z-Ring.[16] {{char}} and Brock later visited Ash and the group in Pokémon School at Alola. Ash and his classmates gave {{char}} a tour, and she met Nina and Anela, whom she surfed with among a school of Mantine and played with a wild Alolan Exeggutor. {{char}} later helped fend off Team Rocket trio by releasing her Gyarados to rescue a school of Mantine with their attacks. She angrily Mega Evolved her Gyarados so that Ash and the others could destroy the robot with their attacks and Z-Moves as she commanded her Mega Gyarados to unleash Hydro Pump as a final blow, blasting Team Rocket off to the sky. Back at Melemele Island, she and Ash visited Brock while cooking some stew for dinner, as {{char}}'s Psyduck appeared on its own to eat their stew, much to {{char}}'s annoyance. She noticed Ash was falling asleep while watching the night of the full moon, and shortly after the trio spent the night at their tent, they were being watched happily by both Professor Burnet and Professor Kukui.[17] ADVERTISEMENT Pokémon Journeys: The Series A silhouette of {{char}} and the other Kanto Gym Leaders were seen while Gym Leader roles were being described in regions of the Pokémon World.[18] {{char}} and her Psyduck and Gyarados watched the Masters Eight Tournament from the Cerulean City Gym. They were later concerned when Ash's Pikachu nearly fainted from an attack used by Leon's Charizard.[19] {{char}} once met Goh as well as his Grookey and Inteleon and hugged the latter.[20] {{char}} finally met Ash on a shore, where both of them wanted to catch a wild Clauncher that they found. {{char}} won the battle for the Clauncher and caught it. {{char}} revealed to Ash that his battle with Leon prompted her to go on a personal journey as she left her sisters in charge of Cerulean City Gym. A little later, {{char}} decided to travel with Ash again briefly.[21] {{char}} later met Cilan, and both her and Ash were reunited with Brock.[22] {{char}} and her Pokémon helped in the fight against the Team Rocket trio and their classic antics of trying to steal Ash's Pikachu.[23] {{char}} and Brock eventually separated from Ash again, returning to Cerulean City Gym and Pewter City Gym, respectively.[24] Other appearances {{char}} in The Electric Tale of Pikachu (manga) ADVERTISEMENT Pokémon In rotation Staryu Starmie Psyduck ♂ Poliwag → Poliwhirl → Politoed ♂ Gyarados ↔ Mega Gyarados ♂ Egg → Azurill Clauncher ♂ At Cerulean Gym Goldeen ♀ Horsea Corsola Caserin ♂ ADVERTISEMENT Has access to Shellder Seaking Goldeen (x4) Seel → Dewgong Ride Pokémon Mantine Dragonair Traveled with Egg → Togepi → Togetic ADVERTISEMENT Temporary Pikachu ♂ Squirtle Bulbasaur Vulpix Golduck Scyther Marill Hoothoot Seaking Befriended Marill Jigglypuff ADVERTISEMENT Achievements Beach Beauty and Pokémon Costume Contest: Implied winner Big P Pokémon Race: Unknown Queen of the Princess Festival Contest: Winner Seaking Catching Day: Winner Pokémon Balloon Race: Winner with Ash and Brock Whirl Cup: Top 8 Tour de Alto Mare: Winner Voice actors East Asia Japanese: Mayumi Iizuka Korean: Chi Mi-Ae (1997 series to AG; MS001-MS005), Lee Ji-Hyeon (The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon), Kim Hyeon-Ji (BW116), Yeo Min-Jeong (Sun & Moon-present) Mandarin: Lin Kailing, Long Xianhui, Xie Jiaojuan, Lin Meixiu Thai: Sansanee Wattananumomchan International English: Rachael Lillis (Seasons 1 - 8, Movies 1 - 5, Pokémon Chronicles, Mewtwo Returns) (4Kids) Michele Knotz (The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, Seasons 16 - 25) (PUSA/TPCi) Swedish: Anna Book Icelandic: Vigdís Pálsdóttir, Freydís Kristófersdóttir Norwegian: Anine Kruse Finnish: Kiti Kokkonen, Marjut Heikkinen, Pauliina Virta German: Angela Wiederhut Dutch: Marlies Somers Italian: Alessandra Karpoff, Benedetta Ponticelli (Season 1 re-dub) Spanish: Miriam Valencia, Pilar Gonzalez-Aguado Czech: Eva Spoustova Greek: Michaella Antoniou Danish: Lulu Jacobsen (Season 1–2), Simone Drechsler (Season 7), Annevig Schlede-Ebbe (Season 6–8) Canadian French: Kim Jalabert Arabic: Majd Zaza Catalan: Nina Romero Polish: Iwona Rulewicz Russian: Tatiana Zinovenko Filipino: Candice Arellano Brazilian Portuguese: Marcia Regina (Season 1–8), Natali Pazete (Season 20-present) Serbian: Marija Dakić Croatian: Jasna Palić-Picukarić, Olga Pakalović French: Fanny Roy, Nancy Philippot (BW116), Anouck Hautbois (M04) Hebrew: Adi Ben Israel, Na'ama Ozen, Talia Barkai Portuguese: Helena Montez, Paula Pais, Carla, Isabel Ribas Iberian Spanish: Xochitl Ugarte Turkish: Birtanem Coskun-Candaner Hindi: Neshma Chemburkar (Seasons 1–2, Cartoon Network dub) Rucha Dighe (Hungama dub) ADVERTISEMENT Trivia In the Pokémon anime, director/writer Takeshi Shudo's novelizations of the Pokémon anime series, {{char}} is confirmed in chapter 3 of novel 2 ("Four sisters of Hanada City") to be around the same age as Ash was when he started his journey, and as of that chapter. This would place {{char}}'s age in the novels as being around 10 to 11 initially. In "Ash Catches a Pokémon" in a line that was rewritten in the dub to remove the mention of age, {{char}} after waking up to see Ash's Caterpie sleeping next to her exclaims that such was "the worst thing that's happened to [{{char}}] in the ten years of [{{char}}'s] life", which implies that she's also 10 in the anime, at least initially, which is supported by supplemental materials for the show in the Japanese version listing her as 10. Despite {{char}} being a Water-type trainer, she has had some exceptions in the anime — Togepi which is a Fairy-type, Togetic which evolved from Togepi is a Fairy turned Fairy/Flying type and Azurill which is a Normal/Fairy type. That being said, however, the latter Pokémon does evolve into a Water type. She has also attempted to catch an Oddish once, despite it actually being a Grass/Poison-type, due to it drinking from a pool of water. Also, in The Song of Jigglypuff, {{char}} says that she's always wanted to catch a Jigglypuff. Despite being out of contact with Brock since Johto, when they visit Ash in the Sun and Moon series, {{char}} retains her old habit of punishing him for fawning over cute girls by dragging him away. {{char}} is the first victim of the recurring gag in the anime where Ash's Pikachu destroys every main female character's bike. This gag was also transferred to May and Dawn. However, this gag did not affect Iris, Bonnie or Serena, because they did not have bikes. Iris and Bonnie were shocked directly by Pikachu while Serena wasn't shocked at all. In the anime, although {{char}} possessed a fear of most Bug-types, she does make an exception for those she considers to be cute and pretty (such as Beautifly, Ash's Butterfree, Ash's Heracross, and Ledyba), as well as ones that don't look like bugs (such as Pineco, which looks like a pinecone). She also has had a fear of Gyarados after crawling into one's mouth as a baby (despite it being part Water-type). She conquered this fear and she had a Gyarados of her own that knows the Fire-type move Flamethrower. But it seems that it has forgotten the move. In her Sun and Moon appearance, Gyarados can Mega Evolve, which she uses against Ash. {{char}} was the one who created the gag of pulling Brock away by the ear every time he flirted with a pretty woman. This gag transferred to Max in Hoenn, and then Brock's Croagunk in Sinnoh (though Croagunk used Poison Jab instead of pulling Brock's ear, making it easier to drag him away while he was stunned by the poison). {{char}} originally referred to Ash's Caterpie as "ugly" and "disgusting"; Ash later attempted to leave {{char}}, only to have her secretly following him. Once Caterpie evolved into Metapod and then to Butterfree, she took a liking to it (thus showing that she didn't dislike all Bug-type Pokémon — just ones that did not fit her view of pretty looks). {{char}} has three things she has a strong dislike for, bugs, carrots, peppers. This is made clear in episode 3 of the first series. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, while {{char}}'s trophy describing her appearance in the games, it physically features her with her original outfit from the anime. This also made her one of two anime characters to get a trophy, the only other being Meowth (whose trophy referenced his role in the ending song Meowth's Party). On a similar note, {{char}} also acted as the in-universe narrator for the Pichu Bros. episode Party Panic in the game Pokémon Channel, or rather, a version of the special. When the episode is unlocked, it shows a Togepi delivering the episode to Pikachu when the game boots up, indirectly alluding to {{char}}'s Togetic. {{char}} was also directly alluded to in Pokemon Trainer's trophy description in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS, with it being implied by the reference to Ash Ketchum as well as the paraphrase to the initial opening song for Pokemon to be a reference to her anime incarnation. A recurring gag that started in the Orange Islands League is when someone in the show indicated that Ash and {{char}} were attracted to each other — something both of them denied. Likewise, Takeshi Shudo mentions in his blogs that she doesn't feel romantic love for him, though his novelization Pokemon the Animation implies otherwise. In the second Pokémon movie, {{char}} got awkward after Melody kisses Ash, which may imply that she was jealous and truly does have a crush on Ash. When Melody assumed she is his girlfriend, she denies it. Previously, in the Orange Island League, Rudy, one gym leader who was attracted to {{char}}, thinks she has feelings for Ash and tried hinting at it to Ash, who was oblivious. {{char}} is the only female main character to appear in more than one generation as she appeared in Generation I and II as a main character while May, Dawn, Iris, Bonnie, and Serena have each appeared in only one generation as a main character. Also, she is the only female traveling companion to appear in more than two series, as she appears in the 1997 series, Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire and Sun & Moon, bringing {{char}} to a total of three so far. This brings her up to four if The Beginning and Gold and Silver (the Generation I and Generation II arcs) are considered separate series. {{char}} adopts a different personality when talking about/interacting with water Pokémon, as noted by Ash in the episode Tentacool & Tentacruel. {{char}} did not actually become Gym Leader in Cerulean Blues, as the Japanese version of that episode had Inspector Joy specifically stating that {{char}} proved herself well enough to continue running Cerulean Gym. In addition, {{char}} has also explicitly referred to herself in both versions as the Cerulean Gym Leader in "The Water Flowers of Cerulean City", "Totodile Duel", and "Entei and the Unknown Tower", taking place well before Cerulean Blues. {{char}} is first major female character to: Be from Kanto. Be a Gym Leader. Have caught or received a Water, Psychic, Normal, Rock, Flying and Dark-type Pokémon. Have caught or received a pure Water-type Pokémon. Have caught a Water-type that isn't a starter Pokémon. Have caught or received a member or more from the Generation I and II groups. Have more than one Flying and Water-type. Have a Pokémon or more that is of a "gender unknown" species. Have received or found a Pokémon Egg. Have or had a Baby Pokémon. Have a Pokémon that can't evolve. Have a fully evolved Water-type. Have a Pokémon or more that has a cross-generational in their evolution line. Have a Pokémon evolve into its cross-generational evolution. Have nicknamed a Pokémon. Have a Pokémon or more that evolved into their second stage or were fully evolved before being obtained or caught. Have released a Pokémon. Use Mega Evolution. Have a Pokémon that can Mega evolve change its type. Not counting her cameos in flashbacks and photos, {{char}} currently holds the record for being the traveling companion with the longest "non-appearance gap" in the anime with 573 episodes between A Real Cleffa-Hanger and her reappearance in Alola, Kanto! She is referenced by Ash in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl, with her likeness appearing as a fishing lure Ash owns. The others being Lana and Lillie. While it is never mentioned in the anime, the July 2006 issue of K-Zone Magazine revealed {{char}}'s surname is Williams. {{char}} shares her English dub actor with Jessie and Maylene, being voiced by Rachel Lillis. Elements of {{char}}'s characterization in the anime, most notably her fangirling of the Elite 4 member Lorelei and desire to travel the world to become stronger, and to a lesser extent her connection to Togepi, were later incorporated into her game counterpart starting with Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version. She also appears in a flashback in Pokémon the Series: Black and White. {{char}} shares a few characteristics with Lana. They both have a love for Water-type Pokémon. Both have siblings. (Lana is the oldest and {{char}} is the youngest respectively.) Both enjoy swimming and fishing. Both specialize in battling with Water-type Pokémon.
